You should pick your nose
Farting, burping, and picking your nose; what do all these things have in common? Well let's see, they're all inappropriate conducts in public. They all involve something coming out of your body. Oh right, and they're all perfectly healthy! Just because something is frowned upon socially, doesn't mean it's not good. Just as peeing involves getting rid of toxins from your body, and farting involves getting rid of excess gas, picking your nose involves getting rid of a buildup of dust and germs.
What are boogers?
Having boogers/snot in your nose means your nose functionally active. While you breath, many things would go up your nose that you don't want up there. This includes dust, bugs, tiny particles of germs and bacteria floating around in the air, and many other such allergens. Your nose is layered with a wet and sticky substance called mucus, along with hair. The hair functions as a filter and blocks things from getting too far up your nose, while the mucus coats and solidifies these so that they can eventually fall out of your nose. The key point here being out of your nose.
Boogers are not supposed to stay in your nose, they 're supposed to come out. Usually when you blow your nose or sneeze or something, they fall out. Sometimes you even rub your nose or subconsciously play with it a bit to get rid of the booger. All of these things are perfectly normal, so if you happen to casually pick your nose and people tell you that you should stop, don't.
Pick your nose, and encourage others to as well.
Chances are, the people telling you to pick your nose do so as well, several times a day. Like you, they may or may not know they consciously do it either. What you should do is consciously start picking your nose. Just find a time when you're alone, and pick at it. Get whatever is up there out of your nostrils and get on with your day. You'll even feel better afterwards. Sometimes when there's a huge booger stuck up there it can be quite uncomfortable, and it's really a great feeling when you get rid of that stuffiness. I like to pick my nose on the toilet (as tempting as it is you shouldn't flicker it on the wall), before I sleep, or in the shower. Those are some really nice private times to perform the act. You'll feel cleaner, and you'll sleep better.
If you are a parent, don't discourage your child from picking his or her nose. Your child is just doing something that comes naturally to them. They're programmed to do that, and telling them not to do that will only frustrate them. As you can see from this video, nose picking comes from our evolutionary heritage:
As you can see, this gorilla is also picking his nose. But wait, he's also eating his boogers!? That can't be healthy!
You should eat your boogers. Eating your boogers is good for you.
Yes, eating your boogers is healthy. Shocking isn't it? After I just said that boogers contain germs and whatnot, and that the whole point of picking your nose is to get the snot out of your body, why would you eat it? Well, it works quite similarly to a vaccination.
Boogers contain small traces of germs and bacteria, in small enough sizes that you're body can fight them. Often times the bacteria are inactive and so don't really post much of a threat anyway. Once your body recognizes the bacteria, it learns how to deal with it and so if you're ever exposed to the bacteria again your body knows how to deal with it already. As such, you're preventing yourself from getting sick.
Now, you have to ask yourself if you're comfortable with eating your own boogers. We're raised with learning that it's disgusting, and so we feel that way. But you will notice that kids always do it. You probably did it when you were a kid too. So next time you see your child picking your nose and eating his or her boogers, don't discourage it. Pretend not to notice it and move on. You'll be doing both them and yourself a favor. Your child will eventually grow out of the habit anyway. And if not then good for them. When you're older it doesn't really do that much good for you anyway since your immune system is fairly strong as it is, but for a child it's really beneficial to consume their own boogers.
Should you start eating your boogers now? Like I said, if you want you can, it's good for you. But it won't do as much good for you as it would a child. You should definitely still pick your nose though. It helps you both physically and emotionally. So pick your nose, encourage others to pick their nose, and let's start a movement to make it socially acceptable!

I thought picking your nose would cause infections up your nose.

Pretty imformative. Some i knew but it all seems to make sense for the most part. Eating boogers as an adult, No. but as a kid yea i can understand. Just as chickenpox. What brought me here was to find why i have such a massive buildup throughout the day. After reading now i know why. Thanks for the post

Um, ew! ;) I'll have to ask my son's doctor about the pseudo-vaccination thing...If that's the case, my son and every other three year old I know should be well equipped to fight off any illness! I think I'll stick to the shots, though. Thanks for sharing!
LearnFromMe on August 23, 2011:
Perhaps I should talk to my middle school students about this...about how it's something you do in private, not all over the desks where other students eventually sit! The hub was certainly interesting, and I love the humor in the tone. :)

You just made my job as a kindergarten special ed teacher a lot easier! If I don't have to spend half the morning telling them to keep their fingers out of their noses, I might get some teaching done! Great hub! Voted up and interesting...

Your nose is also where the "SUPERBUG" M.R.S.A. stapholococus lives , it colonizes there in your nose and when you pick your nose and touch something or someone then you spread those germs to other people , though it is frowned on socially , maybe it is for good reason ,M.R.S.A. staph is NOW DEADLIER THAN the AIDS virus.
Aphrodite Venus from Orlando on August 22, 2011:
Interesting, vote up funny!

Haha. Funny hub, and informative at the same time. I cringe at the idea of eating my own boogers. But hey, I just remembered, I used to eat my boogers when I was a little kid. But I can't bring myself to do it anymore. I'm fine with picking my nose privately.
Voted up and rated funny.

This is interesting, controversial, but makes sense! The germ factor and vaccine suggestion definitely make sense. Nice Hub! Voting up and sharing. I just might pick my nose tonight, but I doubt I can eat it! lol
