Winter and Dry Skin

Winter could be an exciting season of the year for some people, especially for kids. Winter means snow in some states and with it comes dry air and dry skin! My whole family suffered from crack, dry skin all winter. The one that suffered most is yours truly. I've been looking for a product that would help me cure this dry hands and feet. It bothered me seeing my heels were crack and so dry. I bought different brands of lotion hoping that they will help my dry skin. None of these products work, even the expensive ones. I could not believe, that the one which is not costly could help with our skin problem.

I've been searching the internet and asking friends what is good for dry skin. I bought most of the products my friends recommended but none of them work with my dry skin. I went online digging for more information about what types of lotion will be effective to cure dry skin during winter.

The long search is over, I found a cheap way to cure my dry feet and hands. It's the Vaseline petroleum jelly. Proven to cure dry skin. It is so sticky that I decided to combine it with my favorite lotion. The combination of regular lotion and petroleum jelly made it easy to apply and it last longer in your skin. I noticed also that if I only apply the petroleum Jelly, it does not absorb good into my skin. Petroleum jelly and your favorite lotion will do the trick. It will help your skin feels moist, soft and smooth.

I came from a country where the climate is hot and humid, I rarely used skin lotion. Residing in a colder state made my skin so dry. I've been searching for a cream or lotion that might help with my problem. I tried almost everything, but did not work. Even expensive lotions did not help my skin. My husband told me to try Vaseline petroleum jelly. After a week of using it, I can feel the difference. My heels were not as dry and crack as before. I never expected a simple Vaseline petroleum jelly could help my skin problem. I am not worried about winter dry skin anymore. Thanks to Vaseline Petroleum jelly and my Cetaphil lotion. They worked together like a charm. After winter my skin does not look damaged unlike before.

Now our daughter started to have problem with dry skin, especially her hands. It was so dry and rough and it bleeds sometimes. I told her to mix Cetaphil and Petroleum jelly. Little by little her hands feels and looks better. She stopped complaining about it.

It's a very cheap way to help with dry skin.

Vasine makes the Table Shine

Did you know that petroleum jelly is also good in polishing a wood table? Just put a small amount of petroleum jelly on a piece of cloth and wipe it on the table. The table should be dusted first before applying the petroleum jelly. Your table will look clean and shinny without using a smelly, harmful chemicals. This is not my original discovery, I read it somewhere in the internet about an alternative wood polish. See how our dinning table shines.

According to reader's digest.com - petroleum jelly can make your perfume stay longer by putting a little amount in your skin and spray your favorite perfume. (I will have to try this trick). If you have hard time taking off your wedding ring, just put a small amount of Vaseline in your finger and it will slide easily from your finger. Also it can protect your skin from nail polish stain - just put a little near your cuticle when applying nail polish. There are some more uses of petroleum jelly that I did not include in this article that I read from readers digest website. There are a lot of uses for petroleum jelly.

When I had a bump on my feet, my dermatologist performed a surgery to take it out. She told me to change the dressing the next day and apply Vaseline petroleum jelly. It helped heal the wound. It's also good for minor cuts and burns. You must always include it in your medicine cabinet.

A Great Combination

Winter months damage my skin. It will make it so dry. If you are suffering from cracked dry skin. It is good to have a lotion that can help moisten it. Petroleum jelly alone is hard to apply. A combination of Cetaphil lotion plus petroleum jelly work good together in my skin. I put one part petroleum jelly and 2 parts Cetaphil mix them thoroughly and apply to your hands and feet. If you tried almost everything but without any success in treating your dry hands and feet, why not try Vaseline Petroleum jelly. This might help you the way it helped me.

I heard from other people though that petroleum jelly is not safe to use. I don't know if it's true or not. All I know is it helps me with my dry skin.

I read at healthline.com that Vaseline petroleum jelly is safe to use. but some people might be allergic to it. Make sure you take precaution when it's your first time to use it.

Cetaphil moisturizing cream is my favorite lotion to mix with Vaseline Petroleum jelly. I apply them on my very dry feet and hands.

I also use Cetaphil skin cleanser on my face. After putting a toner, I apply only Cetaphil cream on my face before bed. I love it because it does not feel greasy.

Thanks for your comment Demas! Also for sharing about lanolin for dry skin. It might be helpful for people who does not want to use petroleum jelly.

Demas W Jasper from Today's America and The World Beyond on March 06, 2020:

Lanolin is a super choice for treating dry skin at $11.99 (retail) for a 7 oz. jar. It is to be avoided by people allergic to wool as it is an oil obtained from the wool of sheep. Another alternative, and harder to find, is duck oil.

Thanks for letting me know about the danger of petroleum based products on people with oxygen. I would edit this article and add what you've said. Thanks Brenda!

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on February 28, 2020:

Lorna,

This is a nice article.

Vaseline is great for so many things.

I have even used it on my car dash to get it to lay back down from warping in the sun.

Just a note though...recently I was advised by Hospice nurse that no chapstick or vaseline ( petroleum based products ) should be used by those on Oxygen.

I guess that goes for visitors of patients with oxygen also.

Something about fire hazard.

Great write.

Thank you Lorna! I hope it will work on you.

An excellent article Lorna full of great advice and tips. I also suffer with dry skin in the winter months and I will certainly try mixing petroleum jelly with my usual cream. I also like the idea of it making your perfume last longer. An enjoyable read and thank you for sharing.
