I woke up in the morning and felt the sudden intense pain. I can hardly move my joints. The knee was especially painful. I knew it was another sign of gout attack again. I was drinking too much tea on the previous day. The pain is excruciating. I can hardly walk, but I have to drag my body to work.
My wife started an intense internet search for natural remedy of gout. She found this site that talk about Gout Remedies. 59 out of 68 people who drink Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) were relieved from gout pain within a few days. “Two days of ACV was all it took for gout pain relief!” said a few testimonies.
I thought, two days was a short time, and it was worth a try. So, I took it in the morning before I went to work, and twice at night after dinner. On the next day, the pain has gone down to half. Maybe this would work! I continued taking it 3 times a day, and on the third day, my pain was 95% gone!
1 tablespoon of raw unfiltered ACV
1 or 2 tablespoon of honey (to taste, organic preferably)
1 big cup of water (warm or cold does not matter)
Method : Mix and stir, and it’s ready to drink. Drink a glass 3 times a day.
After consumption, please drink another half cup of water to rinse the throat and oesophagus.
It doesn’t cost much. It is so easy to make. Most importantly, it is effective, like a miracle, a great home remedy for gout since our great grandmother’s time.
How did it help?
ACV is made from fermented apples. It contains the naturally occurring form of L-malic acid and acetic acid that aid in relieves painful joints. Malic acid is a type of dicarboxylic acid, an organic compound with the formula HO2CCH2CHOHCO2H, an active ingredient presence in many sour or tart foods. This L-Malic acid dissolves deposits of Uric Acid which causes gout. Potassium and amino acids in ACV helps to purge this toxic waste out of the body.
ACV has been known to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties, mainly due to the presence of the malic acid and acetic acid in the vinegar. Acting as a buffer in the body, the acetic acid reacts with base or acid compounds to form acetate, hence rendering them chemically bio-available for the body's utilization. Furthermore, ACV can reduce the toxicity of certain compounds present in the body by converting the toxin into an acetate compound, which is less toxic, and remove it from the body.
As a gout sufferer, when I took ACV, I find that my inflammation was reduced, pain was relieved and swelling was gone, and hence more mobility for me! It’s an indescribable good feeling.
Background information of ACV
Ninety different substances in ACV have been reportedly measured by Scientist. ACV contains thirteen types of carbolic acids, four aldehydes, twenty ketones, eighteen types of alcohols, eight ethyl acetates and so on. It also contains acetic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, enzymes, amino acids and roughage in the form of potash and apple pectin. Minerals and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, chlorine, sodium, sulphur, copper, iron, silicon, fluorine also exists in ACV. Its vitamin content includes Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Provitamin beta-carotene, and Vitamin P (bioflavonoids).
Is ACV acidic or alkaline ?
Some people thought that ACV is acidic and will worsen the gout. This is not the case. ACV is alkaline-forming food. Foods are categorized as acid-forming or alkalizing depending on the effect they have on the body. An acid-forming food contributes hydrogen ions to the body, making it more acidic. An alkalizing food removes hydrogen ions from the body, making it more alkaline. This classification is based on the intrinsic acidity or alkalinity of the food and how it affects the body after digestion, not on their taste. A common misconception is that ACV tastes acidic, hence it was thought as having acid-forming effect on the body. This is not true. AVC is alkalizing because the minerals they leave behind after digestion help remove hydrogen ions, hence decreasing the acidity of the body. Some people use the term "residue" or "ash" to explain the effect of a food on the body. A food with an acid ash after digestion contributes hydrogen ions, making the body more acidic; a food with an alkaline ash after digestion removes hydrogen ions, making the body more alkaline.) ACV is alkaline because of its "ash" content. This means, if we check the pH of the burned ACV by dissolving it in water, we will get alkaline results.
While ACV is considered alkaline, chemically pure vinegar (acetic acid) is neither acid nor alkaline forming as it leaves no ash when burned. Instead, it evaporates entirely.
How to choose Apple Cider Vinegar ?
The raw, un-distilled, unfiltered, or un-pasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar that comes with the “mother” should be chosen. Raw ACV is, by its very nature, cloudy due to the amazing Mother of Vinegar – the naturally occurring strand-like enzymes of connected protein molecules. This “Mother of vinegar” is believed to have an antibacterial and antifungal property that provides healing effect to the body.
I personally consume, hence recommend, the Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar which is made from organically grown apples. Bragg’s ACV is processed and bottled in accordance with USDA guidelines and is Certified Organic by Organic Certifiers and Oregon Tilth; and is Kosher Certified.
The liquid-clear apple cider vinegar available in the supermarket has been processed to look good for large consumption. It is in fact of less superior quality since the “Mother” has been removed.
After the Pain Relief
When the pain is gone, will it come back? The answer lies in healthier lifestyle - diet control, weight watch, and physical exercise, family history of gout or arthritis, and possibly underlying medical conditions. Frequent occurring gout attacks post high risk of permanently damaged joints and possible kidney damage.

Side Effects and Precautions
Some of the side effects that users of ACV have reported:
Corrode Teeth Enamel: ACV poses maximum threat to the enamel when it is taken undiluted. Hence, always take the ACV with plenty of water. To protect the enamel, rinse the mouth with cold water immediately after consuming ACV
Lowering of Potassium Levels: ACV consumption has also been reported to lower the potassium level in one’s body. Since potassium deficient affects bone density, people prone to weak bones or osteoporosis must avoid consuming ACV altogether.
Effect on Skin: Taking high concentration of undiluted, tablet or pill ACV has been reported to burn the oesophagus. Hence, we should always dilute it with water if taking it directly for its health benefits.
Interaction with Drugs: Some drugs like bumetanide, furosemide, chlorothiazide, chlorthakidone, metolazine and ethracrynic acid can form harmful combination with ACV. Hence, if you are on any medication, please consult with your doctor before taking ACV.

I have read intensively this article and many of the links. As I have been a sufferer of Gout for several years and have taken many medicines which have been prescribed by many doctors. I am currently taking Uloric, although I have relief from the pains of gout, it continously flares up and I must take a small pill called colchrys which the USFDA required be separted from the traditional gout medicines. The drug manufacturers had lost the ability to patent the additional drug as it was part of the Probenicid and others. Now I have come to the realization that eating healthy is the way to prevent gout and the affects of the terrible disease, I plan to put this ACV therapy to the test.

I am a diabetic with neuropathy pain in my legs and feet. I am also prone to tilt attacks. I have found that when my toes begin to feel as if they are burning, I apply a product (available in Canada as Ice-Gel therapy menthol analgesic rub) to my toes for instantaneous (I'm not kidding – it's really that fast) pain relief. If you can't find it under that name, then look for something with ingredients that include: 2% menthol W/W. This is the medicinal portion of the concoction. The remainder of the ingredients are things such as water and iso-propyl alcohol. If you're interested in the rest of the ingredients, you can contact me at email@example.com. Good luck.

To ALL Gout sufferers:
PLEASE, please see my previous post ~ I am still using the Honey+tartaric acid+gelatine mix from time to time, however my Gout seems to have fully receeded now and I am fit and very active. I eat the foods I enjoyed previously and have no more gout attacks or even remote pain. My left foot is now normal and the same size as my right foot. Unbelievable. My gout was a curse for years. Now ancient history ~ well that's how it feels to totally Gout free.
I can fully recommend the 3-way mix to beat Gout.
I now only take the 3-way mix once a month - as insurance just incase I have another gout flare.
I had my last gout attack during December 2010! THANK THE LIVING GOD.
There's no reason to suffer Gout anymore.

I have had GOUT for a long time! I battled for years to find ANYTHING that actually works, with limited or no side effects. My GP also had me on Colchecine. Diclophenac Sodium. Ibuprufen. I recall I could'nt walk properly and my GP had inject me with two Voltaren shots in my lower back. That pain even nearly equalled Gout pain. I tried Tart cherries, fresh Black Cherries imported from the USA. Look, cherries do relieve the pain. But cherries are not a remedy per se. Same with grapes. have to eat a lot and it bloats one!
Pure Ozonated water helps, but takes a month of Sundays. Sodium Bicarbonate also helps, but not that effcetive.
I REALLY BECAME TIRED OF THIS GOUT NONSENSE - until on one day, when the lady at my daily Grocery Shop asked me why I am forever buying cherries, I told her the whole story! She then told me to try the following GOUT FIX:
At first I thought its just another fairy-tale....!
It actually works very well!!!!!!!!!
Here is her GOUT FIX (as good as pure GOLD!)
Two Tablespoons of good top quality Honey;
One Gelatine (powdered form) sachet, 10grams;
One small pinch of Tartaric Acid.
You now mix the above ingredients in say a cup into a paste form and eat it once per day with food.
Note: Be careful with your Tartaric Acid daily intake. Limit to only one small pinch per day. Take for about 5 days and say goodbye to Gout. It worked for me.
The ingredients are relatively inexpensive and can be bought from any Grocery Shop. Further, these are basically natural home use ingredients, which works well as a Gout Fix.
If you dont know what a pinch is - ask your wife! You can normally hold a 'pinch' between your two fingers - no more! That's a pinch.
Its an old German remedy, I was told.
I now keep the above ingredients on hand - just in case!
Thank God - I have been Blessed.
ps: I you cannot find Gelatine powder, then you could try some Jelly powder instead, Gelatine is commonly used in the kitchen - ask your wife.

Dear Tony, I hope you could find other ways to improve your health problems and do not have to live with the pains.... so that you can write more hubs pain-free...:)
Tony McGregor from South Africa on January 10, 2011:
I started to read this Hub with great hope - only to have my hopes dashed! No fault of yours, I hasten to add. I have quite acute attacks of gout and also have a chronic bone problem, and I'm on furosemide - all contra-indications for taking ACV! So I guess I have to live with the pain. So sad!
Thanks for the info and for giving the warnings - very useful. If you had not included the warnings I might have dashed out and bought ACV!
Thanks anyway for an interesting Hub.
Love and peace

I read this a few weeks ago because my son has gout. We have a family history of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. So gout is not unexpected, but when he has a flare, he is miserable. He is active, works out, plays hockey and has a job that requires alot of physical activity. He stays away from the foods that cause a high uric acid count and takes daily meds. Told him about this, but he is stubborn and said no. Next time he has a flare, will approach him again. He is always more willing to take suggestions when he is suffering-thank you.

Excellent job and very informational hub on gout. I have a friend that has it bad and she also gets kidney stones and ends up in the hospital. ACV is a great thing to know. I think I have had this in my big toe after drinking too much caffeine pop. So far, it goes away once I slow down the pop drinking and exercise regularly. Great job here.
