I want to ask you a question. Did you come up with a ton of New Year's resolutions last year? If so, how many did you follow through on? Were you successful, or like many others, did you fall short of your own expectations and completely give up on your life goals?
If you didn't manage to meet your own goals, I may be able to explain this frustrating recurrence for you. It's because you didn't create a solid enough plan to help you reach your goals. I know, you may be thinking, is my problem really that simple? Well, guess what? It is! Instead of spending this year doing the same thing you did last year, set yourself up for success using these tips on how to craft a solid plan.
Step 1: Identify Specific Goals and Motivation (or Lack Thereof)
If your big resolution this year is to hit the gym and get the perfect body, ask yourself why. Why is it that you want to go to the gym? Why is it that you want a perfect body? Are you really motivated to reach this goal or are you just buying into the hype of everyone else?
More often than not, we give up on our goals because we're not motivated. It's absolutely okay to not have a perfect body if that's not what you want. Maybe you would just like to be more fit or healthier than you are now. If that's your goal, run with it and pursue that instead of going after a goal you don't truly want.
Also, you have to make sure that your goal is extremely specific. A goal such as I want to go to the gym and have a better body is not good enough. What type of body do you want? What areas do you want to improve? What type of exercises do people do to get that body? Don't set goals that give you the opportunity to compromise on what you're going after. Be as specific as possible.
Step 2: Figure out When You Want to Achieve Your Goal
It's almost impossible to achieve a goal when you do not have a specific date. This allows you to make excuses and waste time instead of pursuing your goals relentlessly. Figure out when it is that you want to achieve your goals. When do you need your perfect body? How much time will you need to devote to this goal? Sit down, do some calculations, and create your time frame.
Step 3: Craft Your Plan
Now that you have a specific goal and a specific date, all you need is a plan. How do you make a plan? It's simple! Now that you know what you want, all you have to do is figure out what you need to do to get there. How do people get the perfect body? What type of exercises do people do to get defined abs or a slimmer waist? What kind of exercise circuits do trainers use to stay in shape?
Learn all there is to learn about your goal. Do research and discover other people who share or who have shared your goal. Draw from their experience and create your own plan. Once you have a plan, motivation, and an end date, you will be unstoppable!
I know that it is rather early in the year, but I would love to hear your experiences with New Year's resolutions and whether or not having a plan made a difference. Let me know in the comments below!
