The human body is susceptible to ailments. One can get infections and infestations from the surrounding atmosphere at any instant and can get ill in no time. There is a thin line of demarcation between a healthy and an ill person and the transition is so quick and instantaneous that it takes less time to get ill than to realize its onslaught and presence in an individual. The doctrine of - 'Prevention is better than cure' might have evolved from those premises. In any case, once one gets ill one has to go for treatment to get it cured. Many people go for modern medicines which are effective but have menacing side effects and their regular doses can do more harm in other ways though they are able to contain the present problems quickly. This is one common problem with modern medicines.

In this situation, an alternative that comes to mind is to go for some natural alternative therapies which use common household or other such items for curing the person and avoid the dangerous side actions or effects of the modern chemical formulations. One thing which is to be noted at this juncture is that there are many instances where these natural alternatives might not be as effective as envisaged and the individual will have no alternative left except going for modern medical treatment. These situations arise in our lives many times and we have to go for a conscious decision in these matters. Health is a matter of prime importance in our lives. In essence, considering the severity of the problem and one's immune system and the historical experience of that ailment, one has to take a decision in this regard.

Some common ailments

There are some common ailments that catch us from time to time and affect our effectiveness and performance in our work. Some of them are cold, cough, sore throat, headache, body ache, sprain, stomach disorder, skin itching, lack of appetite, feeling of fatigue etc. Many times we go to the doctor for consultation who in turn suggests some routine medical test to find out the problem. Sometimes some abnormal report might reflect the severity of the ailment but most of the times it could be a normal report.

We will be discussing some measures in this article to contain these ailments.

Dry mouth and feeling thirsty

Having a dry mouth and feeling thirsty is not an ailment but is an inconvenient situation. Many of us go for cokes and other such drinks but that gives only temporary respite and in fact that only exaggerates the situation. The basic reason for such yearnings for hydration is simply our lifestyle where we have the habit of taking less water in a day than required. The simple trick is to increase the daily intake of water and the best advice is to have it right from the beginning of the day. So replacing the bed tea with a few glasses of water (preferably lukewarm) is said to be the ideal way to start a healthy day and many people practice this advice made by the ancient oriental scholars or Ayurvedic Vaidhyas (doctors).

The next gulping down of water comes after the main meals and there also it is advised that one should take a little water during meals but after an hour or so take sufficient water as by that time the food is churned substantially in the guts and the paste demands water for dilution and absorption. Other than the above, there are occasions when one has to go out for walks, hiking, and trekking etc and it makes sense to drink sufficient water before embarking on such strenuous activities. Keeping a body sufficiently hydrated is the key to get rid of a dry mouth.

Sore throat

Sore throat is a very common situation experienced by many of us. It is not only irritating but also distracting us from our work. There are many causes of sore throat ranging from exposure to cold to some sort of allergy. There are many common home remedies for it.

The first one is to take hot water periodically which soothes the throat to a great extent. Saline water gargling at least two times a day is an age-old tested remedy for all sort of throat irritations.

Another remedy is taking turmeric powder in lukewarm milk before going to bed. Turmeric powder about one-fourth tsp is to be mixed in a glass of milk and is to be drunk slowly gulping down a little quantity every time. This remedy is not only for a sore throat but helps in increasing the immunity of the person against diseases attacking the body now and then.

Whatever might be the reason one traditional method to suppress sore throat is to protect the neck area from cold air and wind. People wrap a cloth around the neck for some sufficient time and the heat trapped within the wrappings create a soothing effect bringing symptomatic relief.

Hot saline water gargling is an established method to get relief from sore throat. How does it work might be a great matter of research but the fact is that it works. All types of sore throats in their initial stages can be managed with hot saline water gargling 2-3 times a day. In case the deterioration in the throat is much then it alone would not be sufficient to bring relief and one has to go for medical aid.

Cough and cold

Cough and cold are also very common and trouble us from time to time. One of the primary home remedies for it is to inhale hot water vapours which soothe and hydrate the windpipe and lungs and provide immediate relief. It also helps the viscous cough to dislodge from the walls of the pipe and slide out.

Another good remedy is the black pepper-basil-ginger-hot milk drink which can be taken 2-3 times a day and gives significant relief. It is easy to prepare. I am providing its brief recipe as below.

Constipation

Constipation is a big challenge in day to day life. It is considered a source of many ailments in the human body. A delay in evacuation not only is inconvenient but can be detrimental to our health in many ways. There are many home remedies for constipation.

The most common and most effective is consuming a lot of water and take fibrous foods in our daily diet. Junk and oily foods are no-nos certainly.

Another is the Isabgol husk which has been in use for stomach disorders in many households as a natural remedy. This is a fibrous material and is to be taken about 2 tbsp with warm milk after the meals in the night. It is a very effective laxative medium for accelerating the evacuation in the condition of constipation. This is to be taken regularly for a few days before its complete benefits are derived.

People having constipation are advised to have light exercises for at least an hour so that the body muscles move in all the direction forcing the stomach to sync with it and help in the evacuation.

Indigestion and acidity

Digestion is a very important activity in the alimentary canal in the human body and a person having a good digestion system generally would have good health. It is imperative that we have to keep our digestion system in good conditions by taking appropriate foods and following a proper lifestyle. Indigestion and acidity are two common ailments that people experience at times in their lives. If it is occasional then it can be managed with home remedies but if it is a frequent problem then it requires a visit to a qualified doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Occasional indigestion can be controlled with a simple change in one's diet and stopping the oily and raw food items and taking cooked and boiled food items in their place. Generally, indigestion and acidity go together and manifest in us at the same time.

One of the common and effective home remedies for indigestion and acidity is Carom (Ajwain/Ajowan) seeds which look like cumin seed but are shorter in length. Taking 1/2 to 1 tsp of raw carom seed with little water gives instant relief from the acidity as well as a feeling of discomfort in the stomach due to indigestion.

Lemon is also very useful in stomach disorder and lemon water helps in bringing relief in indigestion and acidity situations.

There are some other household remedies like Chamomile tea, Peppermint tea, Ginger, Apple cider vinegar, Fennel seed, Baking soda, Licorice root etc which are also beneficial in stomach disorders are being consumed by people across the globe. Please note that these are to be taken at the most 2-3 times a day and more than that could result in some side actions associated with a large intake of these remedies.

One interesting thing that I remember since my childhood is that my grandmother used to advise me to lie down on my left side while sleeping. Whatever be the scientific reason for that it proved to be beneficial in conditions of minor acidity and belching in the stomach. It might have something to do with the position of the stomach with respect to the gravitational pull of the Earth. Could be or could not but if it works it can be attempted to sleep in that posture.


Headache

Headache is the most common problem in our day to day lives and we experience it from time to time. Though people frequently use strong analgesic drug tablets to subdue or treat it there are many common measures that also help in combating this menace.

  • Getting good sleep is very necessary for our health and those who get a nice spell of sleep generally do not get problems like a headache.
  • Keeping oneself hydrated is a proved way to avoid a headache. Drinking sufficient water at different times in a day would keep oneself hydrated.
  • Many people do not use hair oils but these are very effective in lowering the temperature of the scalp as well as reduce the intensity of headache.
  • Low-intensity headaches are generally subdued with tea and coffee.
  • Observing meditation and Yoga is said to be helpful in keeping the body away from a headache.
  • Lack of some minerals and vitamins like vitamin B and Magnesium could be a cause of this and taking these supplements from time to time helps in avoiding headaches.

Itching in ears

This is a common problem in children as well as adults. The most common cause of this is attributable to the dampness or water particles that enter the ears while taking bath. Sometimes wax is formed inside the ears and that also causes itching as well as temporary loss of hearing. Application of a little medical glycerin (which is generally used by housewives to fight skin dryness in winters) with the help of an earbud generally lessens the itching and helps in the movement of wax automatically out of the ear. Those having a known case of perforations in the eardrum should not try this home remedy and instead visit a qualified doctor.

Eye irritation

The eye is the most important part of our body and we have to take care of it. Eye reddening or eye irritation is a common condition and happens with us from time to time.

There are many reasons for eye irritation or eyesore and some are attributable to exposure to the sun, smoking, too much tea and coffee intake, chlorinated water in swimming pools etc and avoiding that could help in the reduction of this condition. In severe eye irritation, it is advisable to visit a qualified doctor but in minor conditions, many measures are available which can be followed by individuals.

  • Avoiding rubbing eyes, wearing sunglasses when outside, having a good sleep are some measures that are essential for eye care.
  • Breaks between the long study or computer operations are also desirable to keep eyes clear of these conditions.
  • Applying a cold cotton or cloth piece to the eyes gives a soothing effect and this can be used 2-3 times to get relief.
  • Eye drop formulations containing natural ingredients especially castor oil are useful in such conditions and one drop of the same can be applied before sleeping as well as after getting up.
  • Aloe vera is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties. One teaspoon of Aloe vera gel can be mixed in half a cup of water and a cotton piece soaked in it can be put over the closed eyes for a few minutes. Doing this two times a day would help in reducing eye irritation.

Skin itching

This is a common condition and many people suffer from some sort of skin itching or irritation. There are many measures that are suggested by dermatologists also to contain skin itching. Some of them are -

  • Take bath with lukewarm water and restrict the bath time to 10 minutes only. Bathing for prolonged periods makes the skin dry.
  • Use some unscented soaps rather than the fragrance ones. The chemicals used in fragrances might irritate the skin. One of the soaps that I have used and can recommend is Medi-mix soap.
  • One has to avoid extreme temperature changes and preferably wear loose cotton clothes.

Sometimes we can control and contain some ailments with simple household remedies. They are very handy and easy to use. It is better to use these options in the initial stages though in severe cases one has no alternative other than visiting a qualified doctor.

I am very familiar with using several of these home remedies, especially drinking enough water, eating foods with fiber, and gargling with salt water. The good thing about many of these natural remedies is that they are not harmful to our bodies. If we still have problems, we can then consult a doctor. Many home remedies are very effective!
