Natural Ways to Stop that Annoying Itch!

Itchy skin is annoying, irritating and can be embarrassing. This article has many ways that can help you naturally stop the itch without harsh (and often times expensive) medications. However, if you do not know what is causing the itch it is important to identify the main cause if it continues.

What exactly is itchy skin?

As they Mayo Clinic explains, itchy skin also known as pruritus (proo-rie-tus) can be a result of many things from a rash, an internal disease (liver and kidney diseases) there are literally hundreds of things that can make you itchy. While our first instinct is to scratch it as this temporarily relieves the itch, it's recommended you don't scratch it as doing so can irritate the skin more causing more itching, and could lead to infection as it breaks the skin open.

1. Itch over a large area? Stop the itch with a relaxing bath.

If you have an itch that covers a big area (or all over your body) try this method. As you fix your bath add in one of the following ingredients that is known to help the relief of itchy skin.

1/2 cup to 1 cup of baking soda - add to warm water

1 cup of colloidal oatmeal - add under warm running water.

2 cups of vinegar - add to cool water.

Personally I prefer the oatmeal method as I can't take the smell of vinegar. You can either purchase packs of oatmeal bath solution made for this, or use regular oatmeal. If you use regular oatmeal you don't want the big pieces of oatmeal floating around. You can put it in stocking, then hold it under the running water, or if you have a blender you can blend it into a fine powder and sprinkle in the bath.


2. Itch do to dry skin? Stop the itch by moisturizing and drinking more.

If your itchy skin is caused from dried out skin, try moisturizing regularly. Skin can get dried out from many things. For example bathing or showering can remove the skins natural moisture. Your central heat and air units can dry out the air causing your skin to become dehydrated.

There are several all natural body lotions and bath products and more coming out all the time. Adding lotion to your dry skin after showers or baths is the best time to moisturize. You may also consider purchasing a humidifier to help hydrate the air in your home. Drinking more water will help naturally hydrate your skin from the inside as well.

Some other itch relief ideas that are not exactly "natural" include mentholated Vick's Vapor Rub, taking antihistamine which helps against rash and if it's an allergy reaction. If you have a hair dryer you may also try turning it to the highest setting and waving it back and forth over the itchy area. The heat acts in the same method as scratching to relieve the itch, but without breaking the skin and risking infection.
