My journey through Endometriosis and how I conceived naturally?

Married for three years, busy settling things between us and our new home, I and my husband never thought of extending our family. One fine day we realized all our friends and cousins were having their kids, our social media timelines were full of baby announcements, and that was when we thought of giving it a go. We were excited and starting planning for it. Every month I would keep my fingers crossed and prayed for conception but no – As I had read several blogs I got to know it was normal for a healthy couple to take almost one year to conceive. But – keep inside I thought something was wrong with my monthly period flow. Without wasting any time, we booked an appointment with a gynecologist nearby who diagnosed me with ENDOMETRIOSIS!!!

Endometriosis what it is?

Endometriosis is a medical condition that occurs when the endometrium (lining of the uterus), grows in fallopian tubes, ovaries or along the pelvis. When that lining breaks down, like the regular lining in the uterus that produces the menstruation, it has nowhere to go and starts accumulating at one place. I had developed endometriosis on my left ovary – Oh my God! What news it was. The doctor was not sure, so she suggested cancer tests and an MRI. We were so scared, our life was so jolly and all of a sudden, this not so known term changed our world. Doctor and some research on the internet – we got to know, it is one of the prime causes of infertility.

INFERTILITY? No way this cannot happen to me. I am healthy, and I can conceive easily. The doctors are mad - It can’t be true.

Back to reality – We consulted the best allopaths in our area and what they suggested was – Immediate laparoscopy followed by IUI and still if I was unable to conceive then the only option was IVF. I was so scared and didn’t want to go through all this.

I chose Ayurveda over Allopathy

I didn’t want surgery or IUI and IVF, so I started looking for some alternate ways, and yes, I found it. I had been visiting an Ayurveda clinic for my husband’s spinal disc problem ( I will share about it in another write up) I thought of discussing with the doctor out there, and to my surprise, I found about the treatments, the only difference was this treatment needed my efforts, and time and ultimately would make me a healthier person. After much discussion, we both gave this treatment a green signal.

What the treatment included?

The treatment included Panchkarma therapies such as:

Virechanam

Shirodhara

Abhyangam

Vasti

Uttara Vasti

My doctor told me that time plays a major role in Ayurveda, so I had to follow a strict schedule about everything, may it be breakfast, lunch, dinner, evening snack, or any other thing. I also walked for around 8-10 kilometers a day and drank a lot of cumin seed water.

Virechanam

It is one of the five therapies in Ayurveda. It is indicated for diseases caused due to vitiated pitta or in combination with pitta predominance. It is done to detox the body; the treatment is carried out early morning on an empty stomach. This time is called as Pitta Kalaa in Ayurveda.

The process includes taking medicated ghee followed by maand ( a bowl of boiled brown rice with salt) for lunch and dinner for seven days continuously. Nothing else is allowed for this span – the therapy is tough but comes with uncountable benefits. It is believed taking medicated drink spreads ghee across your body and loosen all the impurities. On the last day, Abhyangam is done to bring all the impurities into the intestine, and then purgation medicine is given by the doctor. The purgation happens until the Waste products are eliminated through the lower gastrointestinal tract.

This therapy was the toughest of all, no food for seven days till purgation was done and three days after it. I was advised to increase my diet slowly. To my surprise, though it was the toughest of all therapies but instead of losing strength, I felt quite light and full of energy.

Shirodhara, Abhyangam, and Vasti

These three therapies were combined, 40 minutes of Shirodhara, 20 minutes of Abhyangam, and 5 minutes of vasti. Shirodhara is the gentle, application of warm oil on the third eye, an area where nerves are highly concentrated, just between the eyebrows. When the warm oil is poured on the forehead, it induces relaxation, calms the nervous system, and stimulates the pituitary gland (which plays a large part in strengthening the reproductive system).

Abhyangam: It was practiced for 20 minutes after Shirodhara to relax the body and mind. Abhyangam reduces aggravated Vata.

Vasti: It's a therapy where medicated oils and liquids are induced inside the body through anal route to clean the gut. It leads to purgation and cleanses the colon. A clean gut means a healthy body and no diseases.

Uttara Vasti

Uttara Vasti targets the diseases of the urinary system, and the vasti is given through birth passage (vaginal tract). The vasti helps in eradicating diseases related to the female reproductive system.

The result

I underwent all these therapies twice in a row, followed by medications as well as strict dietary control and performing yoga and daily walks. It didn’t reduce my cysts completely, but after seven long months of devoting myself towards Ayurveda and my health I conceived naturally and this I would say was a miracle as per Allopathy. The biggest thing is the real cure of endometriosis is pregnancy itself. Now, I have a three months old baby, and the radiologists say, my endometriosis is gone.

It was my efforts, zeal, and my husband’s support that I could do all this.
