Becoming A Green Junkie

Prior to being diagnosed with lupus several years ago, I was already very health conscious. However, since then I have become even more attuned to “clean” living — organic foods, limited sun exposure, filtered water, whole foods, eating out less frequently, making my own natural health and beauty products, making my own cleaning products.

Endocrine disruptors

Commercial toothpaste ingredients

Have you read the label on your toothpaste recently? The list of ingredients in commercial toothpastes is a little frightening, to say the least. On the labels of many mainstream brands, you’re likely to find one or more of the following ingredients:

Triclosan – This is an antibacterial agent and preservative used in some toothpastes. It has been proven to be an endocrine disruptor, a skin irritant, and can cause allergic reactions.

Sorbitol – This keeps toothpaste from drying out, but can cause diarrhea if too much gets into your system.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – SLS is a foaming agent, detergent, and proven to be carcinogenic.

Artificial colors like FD&C Blue Dye No. 2 – These can have an adverse impact hyperactivity in children, allergic reactions, and even cancer (in animal studies).

Aspartame, Sachharin – These are artificial sweeteners that often show up in toothpaste formulas, linked to serious health issues. Avoid at all costs.

Fluoride – This topic has been under scrutiny for a long time now. The bottom line is, fluoride is toxic! The FDA now requires all manufacturers to put a poison warning on all fluoride toothpaste.

Check out the videos posted for more information on the Flouride Issue.

“Research has shown that many conventional personal-care products contain chemicals of concern that can disrupt your hormones, have been linked to cancer, etc.

The Flouride Deception

"Just because we've been doing something for years doesn't mean that it's right!"

Make or buy natural toothpaste

If you’re not willing to totally give up store-bought toothpaste, there are many natural brands of toothpaste on the market that are made without all the harmful or toxic ingredients mentioned above.

However, the cosmetics industry is very good at the art of naming ingredients, so you must be a savvy shopper, and know the different names used to describe ingredients on the packaging.

The best way to avoid having harmful ingredients show up in your mouth is to stay away from commercial toothpaste.....and to make your own. Homemade toothpaste is one of the easiest DIY projects you can do.

I've often been asked, "How does something that is black whiten your teeth?" My blend also contains activated charcoal and it works wonders.

My Homemade Tooth Powder Recipe

Why do I make my own tooth paste? It saves money, gives me a feeling of accomplishment, makes me "dentally self-sufficient" and allows me to leave out all the harmful ingredients commercial toothpaste is made of. Much of the cosmetics and other personal care products contain numerous ingredients, such as phthalates, parabens, formaldehye and diethanolamine that we should be wary of. I am very concerned with what I put on my skin because I know it ends up in my body. The same goes for toothpaste. As much as we may try, we often end up swallowing some of it.

With my recipe, I am not concerned about swallowing it, as it is good enough to eat.

It also is very quick and easy to prepare.

Here is the recipe that I make for my mineralizing and whitening tooth powder.

Ingredients:

Activated charcoal 1 tsp.

Licorice root 1 tbsp.

Myrrh Resin Powder 1/2 tsp.

Bentonite Clay 4 tbsp.

Peppermint leaf powder 1 1/2 tsp.

Essential oil of peppermint 5 drops

Essential oil of cinnamon 5 drops

Baking Soda 2 tsp.

Clove 1/2 tsp.

Himalayan Pink Salt 1 1/2 tsp.

Stevia 1/2 tsp.

Coconut oil...if you want to create a paste

Combine all the ingredients in a glass mason jar. Shake well. Enjoy.

Why Become Dentally Self-Sufficient?

According to Robert Nara, in his book, How To Become Dentally Self-Sufficient, "It is discouraging and frustrating to see such an enormous expenditure of money and technology just to keep alive the fiction that diseased teeth are inevitable; and that the only person who can do anything about disease damage is a dentist with his mechanical tools."

How to Become Dentally Self-Sufficient is in layman's language, that allows anybody to care for family oral health at home.

Essential oils for teeth and gum health

Essential oils are an integral part of my natural oral care routine.

As we know, the benefits of essential oils are far more than aromatic. They have amazing therapeutic, healing qualities.

Thieves EO Blend Apply to gums to keep gums healthy. Apply orally to maintain healthy teeth. Apply a drop or two to gums and teeth for pain relief from toothaches. Add to your homemade toothpowder or toothpaste. You can even gargle a few drops in some oil if experiencing a sore throat.

Cinnamon essential oil (EO) has long been used for its medicinal properties, specifically its antifungal, antibacterial properties. Recent research conducted in New Zealand showed that cinnamon EO has the greatest antimicrobial potency against streptococcus mutans, the bacteria responsible for tooth decay, and lactobacillus plantarum, one of the bacteria responsible in gum disease.

Peppermint EO is very effective at killing bacteria that can cause gum disease. Adding a drop of oil to toothpaste during brush helps to fight against cavities, toothache, whiten teeth and acts as a mouth freshener. You can even gargle by dissolving peppermint oil in hot water; this is also an excellent mouth freshener killing odor causing germs.

Spearmint EO is very similar to peppermint EO. It helps to eliminate germs, and heals wounds very quickly. It also helps to soothe soft tissues like gum disease, thus aiding in overall oral health.

Myrrh EO acts as both an antiseptic and a soother. It has traditionally been used to support gum health and to heal mouth ulcers. It also assists gum tissue health by supporting the flow of blood to the tissue.

Clove EO has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years to relieve tooth pain. Clinical research demonstrated that clove inhibits many pathogenic bacteria. In the past, dentists have used clove to disinfect disturbed root canals, since clove has strong germicidal properties.
