Why all the stress?

"I'm so stressed out!" Have you ever said that to yourself or to someone? I know I have! Do you know why you're so stressed out? Or even more, do you know what stress is? Stress is basically our body's response to the demands we are putting on it.

So what have you been demanding of your body lately?

Job pressure?

Make more money?

Poor or Toxic Relationships?

Social Media Overload?

Sleep Deprivation?

Poor Nutrition?

Health Issues?

So why am I stressed? Who said I was stressed? Hahaha! On a serious note, though, I do get stressed from time to time, but how I deal with that stress determines how successful I am at getting back to my joyful self after. You see, I am a chronic illness Warrior! I like saying that....WARRIOR! I have lupus, and so many other overlying illnesses such as fibromyalgia, neuropathy, pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic atrial fibrillation and tachycardia among others. So you could say I could get stressed from time to time having to deal with all these health concerns.

How do I deal with them....apart from all the numerous trips to the many specialists? Natural remedies! I am a huge fan of natural remedies, being an Herbalist and Aromatherapy Consultant.

For many of us a stress-run life is the norm, whether one is battling a chronic illness, or just trying to meet the demands of life, such deadlines, frustrations, family demands, job pressures. How do we react to this stress? We become anxious, frustrated. Our immune system is seriously compromised.

Essential Oils for Stress

When I was first diagnosed with lupus I was given a myriad of pharmaceutical drugs, which placed me in the hospital two days later. This was the event that put me on a journey to find more natural remedies to help to heal my body and to cope with the many symptoms of what this disease was doing to me. One of those remedies for me was essential oils or EOs, for short.

There are many Essential Oils companies out there, and there are numerous essential oils available that can help you to ease symptoms of stress, and the depression and anxiety that frequently accompany. What I am going to suggest to you are my favorite ones. As you use essential oils, you will find that there are some that you like more than others. Use those for your personal remedies. Scents can become very personal, so one that works for me could make you very emotional or make you gag.

Keep in mind that these essential oils have other benefits, in addition to being stress-busters. However, today I am focusing on stress.

So here is my personal list of favorite essential oils for stress. I will go into further detail later in the article, and will also give you some very simple blends to try.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot essential oil is an aromatic oil extracted from bergamot orange peel, and is highly recommended for those who want to relieve stress and anxiety in a natural way, as it helps decreasing the levels of the stress hormone corticosterone. It is relaxing, helps to build confidence, is uplifting and enhances moods.

It has great anti-depressant qualities, is antimicrobial, and also helps to reduce blood sugar. Bergamot essential oil can be inhaled after sprinkling a few drops of the oil onto a cloth or tissue, or by using an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer, or mix in your bath few drops of it in one tablespoon of carrier oil (such as jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil etc). It can also be applied to the bottoms of your feet before bedtime to promote better sleep and relaxation.

Basil Essential Oil

Basil Essential Oil

Basil essential oil is one of the oils in my Memory and Focus blend. However, in addition to being great for memory, it is great for anxiety reduction. Basil works by not altering the mood, but rather, by helping the body function optimally during times of stress.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary Sage

Clary Sage uplifts your mood by "sucking the negativity out of you as it fills you with a sense of euphoria and positivity." Tim Blakley, Aromatherapist.

In the Korean Academy of Nursing, there was a study done that involved the inhalation of clary sage with lavender, peppermint, and rosemary – the combination of these oils resulted in less anxiety for the individuals taking a stress test. There have been some studies involving clary sage and most have demonstrated that it can help with anxiety, although it is by no means going to result in a cure. However, it should provide a temporary soothing effect on your mind and body.


Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil is my favorite essential oil for everyday use, in addition to it being one of the most powerful and versatile essential oils available. It helps to mitigate feelings of depression and helplessness, as well as being great for anxiety and stress management.

You may be familiar with this essential oil as it being one of the gifts that was brought to the baby Jesus. I start my day with this oil as it is part of my bath soap. It is also in my blend that I use on my face. However, If I am feeling just the slightest pang of stress, one drop goes into my palm. I gently rub my palms together and inhale deeply. Stress gone!

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium has a wonderfully uplifting, calming scent. Its essential oil reduces stress and depression, while minimizing inflammation, reducing blood pressure and improving circulation. It is also said to be able to help the wearer release negative memories. Just like the other essential oils mentioned, Geranium also has many other benefits.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is a plant that needs no introduction, I am sure. So many of us have used it in teas, in lotions, in soaps, in bath gels, but have never given a second thought to its many benefits.

There are many different types of lavender, but that is for another post. Again, lavender essential oil, like so many of the other essential oils mentioned, have many other benefits. It helps to reduce stress and anxiety, in addition to promoting restful sleep, soothing both the mind and spirit.

Orange Essential Oil

Orange essential oil is one oil that is loved by anyone just getting started with essential oils. It is a very versatile oil, like the others. very uplifting, and is great for dealing with anxiety and depression. If you need a pick-me-up because you are feeling depressed, fatigued, or stressed, just a few drops in a diffuser, steam inhalation or eight or nine drops in your bath water, and your blues will diminish.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Relieve nervous tension, panic attacks and tension with Orange essential oil. It is very calming, in addition to having other benefits.

Most people have heard of chamomile tea, but may not have tried it in aromatherapy to help reduce anxiety. However, it's well established as a plant that can help to help reduce stress and even help with insomnia, restlessness, and muscle tension. My youngest son loves to have Chamomile tea before bed.

Sandalwood essential oil can help you achieve more clarity and a sense calmness due to its extensive therapeutic benefits. This special essential oil has an amazing scent, but sandalwood can also have an effect on overall well-being and mental health, along with many other surprising healing properties.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang ylang is one of the ingredients in my personal perfume. It really does help me with the heart arrhythmia issues that I encounter frequently. It is also great for depression, anxiety, and has so many other health benefits. Many use it as a perfume on its, but it blends so beautifully with so many other essential oils.

In Conclusion.....

There is no single best essential oil or scent for stress and/or anxiety, but there are some scents that work better than others. I would encourage you to try a lot of different ones and take note of what ones have the biggest impact on you, and which work best for you, which ones scents appeal to you personally. The ones that are listed above have all been associated with stress relief, to help improve an individuals cognition, mood, or overall health.

Anxiety Blend

10 drops Clary Sage essential oil

10 drops Geranium essential oil

5 drops Roman Chamomile essential oil

5 drops Lavender essential oil

Blend well. Don't forget to dilute with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, olive oil or jojoba oil before applying to the skin.

Stress Buster Essential Oil Blend

4 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil

4 drops Clary Sage essential oil

2 drops Basil essential oil

3 drops Geranium essential oil

1 drop Sandalwood essential oil

How do I use essential oils?

Diffusing

Add a few drops to your diffuser and use throughout the day to lift your spirits and calm your mind.

Diffuse at night to reduce anxious thoughts and promote better sleep.

Add a couple drops to your pillow (under the pillow case) to inhale while you sleep.

Inhalation

Add 1-2 drops on the palm of your hands and rub them together. Bring your palms to your nose and take 4-6 deep and slow breaths to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.

You can also inhale essential oils using an individual personal inhaler. You can also inhale drops floated on the top of hot water, with your head covered with a towel.

Massage

Add 6-8 drops to 2 oz carrier oil (coconut oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba) and rub your shoulders for a quick stress relief.

Bath

Add 5-10 drops of the EO diluted with a carrier oil to your bath tub.

More Ways to Use Essential Oils

  • Add a few drops to a tissue or a cotton ball and place in your car, in the AC vent as you're driving.
  • Add 2 drops on a cloth and put in the dryer for calm, fresh- smelling clothes.
  • Add 2-3 drops on a cotton ball and put in the vacuum cleaner.
  • Put a few drops on a napkin and place in the AC area of your home. It will gently diffuse throughout your whole home.
