The therapeutic properties of mushrooms have recently made headlines. According to new research from Penn State College of Medicine, eating mushrooms may improve a person's state of mind. Not only do they reduce the risk of cancer and early mortality, but new research performed by Penn State College of Medicine suggests that these micronutrients may assist in a wide range of health problems.

Over 24,000 U.S. adults were surveyed between 2005 and 2016 for data on diet and mental health by Penn State researchers. Researchers found that people who ate mushrooms were less likely to suffer from depression. They discovered that individuals who ate mushrooms had a decreased risk of depression.

Prior to this study, there had been only a few studies that looked at the linkage between mushroom intake and depression, and the bulk of these were clinical trials with less than 100 people. According to the researchers, this study emphasizes the potential clinical and public health value of mushroom consumption in lowering depression and avoiding other disorders.

Anti-inflammatory: The Highest Dietary Source Of Amino Acid Ergothioneine

We utilized multivariable logistic regression models to account for potential confounding variables. The weighted prevalence of depression was 5.9 percent among 24,699 participants (mean (SE) age: 45.5 (0.3) years). Mushrooms were ingested by 5.2 percent of those who took part. Participants in the middle tertile of mushroom intake (median intake = 4.9 g/d, number of cases = 16) had a lower risk of depression (adjusted OR = 0.31; 95 percent CI: 0.16, 0.60), while those in the highest tertile did not (median intake = 19.6 g/d, adjusted OR = 0.91; 95 percent CI: 0.47, 1.78, number of cases = 22) (P-trend = 0.42).

Cross-sectional data and an inadequate information on particular kinds of mushrooms ingested are limitations. Mushroom users have a decreased risk of depression. It could not notice a dose-response connection.
