Mind control has long been considered a form of magic in fiction, or a thing that may need a device or technology. It is none of those things.

Our brains naturally communicate with each other. A simple form of this is co-regulation, which is an important skill that is part of our emotional intelligence. Some individuals can use their output brainwaves to talk to other brains, and if that person is kind and benevolent then that talent will only do good.

However, mind control is a weapon for people who want to control others and render them like puppets.


Current research into electroencephalography (EEG), brain wave monitors, and wireless technologies such as the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) has made thought control what it should be. Not only the ability to control others through one's own mind (telepathy or telekinesis), but also the ability to connect with machines, to send messages, and to exercise control over one's own biological functions through thinking. The concept of mind control has been around for decades through cybernetic implants, nanomachine electrodes, or by transferring thought data.

Advances in the study of neural signals have made it one of the most modern areas of biomedical engineering. A group of researchers from the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering[i] explained in a study published in Nature Communications[ii] how advances in artificial biology, optogenetics[iii], and BCIs have been compiled to create the world's first intellectual-genetic interface. BCI systems are still in the development and testing phase but are becoming increasingly powerful and applicable.

Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)

BCI studies have proven that mindfulness and meditation training can improve the ability to control the activity of the individual brain and motor imaging[iv]. In a BCI, the brain signals of the participants are transmitted back to them in real time. Researchers trained four people suffering from epilepsy to move a cursor on the computer with the power of thought.

BCI is a device that lets individuals control a machine or computer with their brain. In BCI applications, the user must reproduce brain signals using motor image strategies. Brain signals can be classed as aiming to control external devices such as computers or wheelchairs[v].

The effort to fuse mind and machine dates to the seventies when scientists began to drill into human skulls and implant the first brain-computer interface electrodes to translate brain cell activity into data. Today, BCIs can regulate the tremors of Parkinson's disease and restore basic movement in people with paralysis. Non-invasive control methods such as EEG taken from the skull are safer and more convenient than the more invasive methods for brain implants, but they take longer to learn depending on the levels of knowledge of the users.

The ability to detect and control electrical activity in the brain through the scalp will transform medicine and change society drastically. Patterns of this electrical activity can show if a person's perception and understanding are normal or aberrant. People like Elon Musk foresee a future in which chips implanted into our brains would replace our need for a keyboard, mouse, joystick, steering wheel and the like.

New methods for stimulating certain brain circuits can treat neurological and mental illnesses and control behavior. The ability to question and manipulate electrical activity in the human brain is promising for the brain biochemistry of the body. Successful adjustment of brain activity can lead to improving cognition and behavior[vi].

The ability to control the electrical activity of brain circuits is like how electrical stimulation can help in the treatment of heart disease. Experts could gain insights into suicidal beliefs by measuring patterns of an individual's brain activity that differ from what is considered normal, defined as the average response of a large population.

Though Elliot S. Valenstein[vii] never provided a formal definition of mind control, his main argument focused on discrediting the notion that the thoughts, decisions, and actions of subjects can be manipulated by electrical stimulation of the brain, providing a detailed account of the brain's known abilities and limitations.

Brainwashing, also known as mind control, coercion, thought reform, or re-education, is the concept that the human mind can be altered or controlled by certain psychological techniques. Other discussions about mind control tend to focus on psychopharmacological or behavioral methods that alter brain function, such as those used by the CIA and the US Senate in 1977. Psychopharmacology is the scientific study of the effects of drugs on mood, sensation, thinking, behavior, judgment, and memory.

There are abundant sources of reports on mind control not only in formal academic literature, but also in the online accounts of people who claim to have witnessed or acted in mind control, or who claim to have been targeted for mind control.

Brainwashing allows people to resist the control of the mind, the reading of thoughts, and other psychic forces used against them. It is said that brainwashing reduces the ability of subjects to think independently, allows the introduction of new thoughts and ideas into their minds, and changes their attitudes, values, and beliefs. Mind control is about controlling the will of a person and taking over their mind.

High Frequency Prayer

People with high frequency prayer[viii] have a greater ability to control their own brain activity compared to those with low frequency prayer. This means that they could sense what they were feeling or could hear the thoughts of others much like telepathy, although this ability is limited to people who are physically and/or mentally connected, as they are unable to transmit their thoughts to anyone else.

Similar techniques have been used for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), in which people feel an overwhelming urge to engage in repetitive behavior. OCD is associated with unusual electrical activity in the frontostriatal circuitry of the brain[ix].

Brain Stimulation

Deep brain stimulation can regulate unusual electrical activity in the brain and improve the quality of life. Although the fronto-parietal system[x] is not directly connected to other parts of the brain, theoretical work has shown that it works by bringing the brain into difficult-to-reach states through an energy landscape. One way to control thoughts is to inject energy to guide the brain through this energy landscape.

When you exercise dominance and control over your mind, it means that you have a kind of mentality that cannot be overcome or subjugated. It is the ability to govern and control the mind to develop an impenetrable mental fortress and suspend unwanted thoughts, feelings, and impulses to achieve its goals.
