How to look younger

Are you a man who has recently started to notice the signs of aging are catching up with you? When you look in the mirror, does it seem like the grey hairs on your head are starting to become more abundant? Has your stubble begun to take on a whitish appearance? How about your face – are you seeing some deep lines and wrinkles?

If all of this seems familiar, you have come to the right place. This article is all about dealing with the reality of aging and how you can reverse the hands of time to look 10-years younger – for less than $50.00!

That’s right, I am going to teach you how to erase a good 10-years from your appearance in a way that doesn’t require cosmetic procedures and doesn’t break the bank. What’s more, it can all be done in five simple steps.

Finally, the approaches mentioned here will do the job in a way that won’t cause others to think you have had work done or are bigtime obvious. Now take a look at the picture of actor Dylan McDermott. He looks like a guy in his early 40’s doesn’t huh? Guess what, the dude is over 50!

I mention all of this because my goal is to help you create a masculine, rugged look like Dylan without making drastic changes to who you are. Many of the tips described here come from studying this actor, who has served as a source of inspiration for this article.

The suggestions that follow are ideally suited for men who are in their 30’s to early 50’s. It will work for guys outside of this age group however, the products and routines I will go over seem to work best for dudes in this age group.

OK are you ready? Let’s jump right in!

Hair Glaze John Frieda

1. Hair Glaze

One of the major signs of aging is graying hair. A little around the temples is OK but once it starts to sprout up on other areas of the head, like the base, it is a dead give-away that age is starting to get the best of you.

One way to counter this problem is to use a product that brings out the natural color in your hair without depositing permanent dyes. That’s right, I am saying you don’t need to color your hair.

John Frieda makes a great hair glaze for people with dark hair (brunettes) and for blonds. You just use this a few times a week and it literally will bring back the color to the areas you are noticing the greys coming in. It also gives your hair a cool, sleek shine.

  • Opt for a fade cut
  • Crop cuts help to look younger
  • Shorter cuts can help with blending bald spots
  • Look for a real barber
  • Ask about their experience with fades

2. Fade Hair Cut

It is pretty much an open anti-aging secret that a haircut can help a guy look younger. What is often missing from the details on this point is the type of haircut you get. Yep, it really matters!

If you are a dude looking to seriously take off a decade or more from your appearance, I am going to make a radical suggestion here. Ready for it? OK, I suggest you go to a barber and get a fade cut. Notice I did not say a “stylist” but a barber!

The reason I am suggesting this is because barbers are trained specifically with cutting male hair. You should know however that finding a good barber is not always easy. I encourage you to scour your local listings online and ask around.

Once you do find a barber you are comfortable with, ask about getting a fade. This type of cut helps to crop you hair.

Last point fades are also known as “boxed cuts” because your hair takes on square-like appearance. This helps to create a more youthful appearance, accentuating your jawline and chin. If you notice Dylan McDermott’s picture, he has a bit of a fade cut but not overdone.

Cetaphil Gentle Face Cleanser

Cetaphil Gentle Face Cleanser

3. Face Cleanser

You probably already knew this but your face says a lot about your age. Rather than give you a bunch of step by steps here on facial care (there’s already plenty of that on the Internet) I am going to just touch upon areas you need to focus on.

Let’s start with your pours. Large pours can make us look old and tired. Many guys get large pours through no fault of their own (i.e. genetics). With that shared, you can minimize their development and appearance by using products that are designed to clean out the crap and firm up the supporting layers of skin.

My first suggestion here is to buy Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cream. The great thing about this product is that Cetaphil contains gentle cleansers that remove dirt and debris but do NOT remove important oils the face needs to help it remain hydrated.

Cost: $10.00

Clay Mud Mask

Clay Mud Mask

4. Clay Mask

This particular point may seem kind of silly but it is not one to skip. Using a facial clay on your mug is going to help tighten your skin and reduce the appearance of those lines and crevices. Yes, I am talking about a mask here.

There are tons of products on the market that promise to do all sorts of things. Many of these are ridiculously overpriced. My suggestion is to pick something that has wide utility – meaning that if you have oily skin or dry skin, the same product will work.

A great one to think about is the simple Clay Mud Mask sold by Queen Helene. What I like about this mask is that the product itself comes from English clay, a naturally occurring type of clay that is thought to have anti-aging properties. The other nice thing about this product is that it is easy to apply and allows for even distribution.

Use the mud mask about 2-3 times a week to help make your face look more firm, less porous/wrinkled.

Cost: $4.00

Cetaphil Face Moisturizer

5. Moisturizer

This final point may seem like an obvious one but I’m mentioning here because of its importance. Using the right moisturizer really matters when it comes to creating a younger look. They also help with preventing the onset of fine lines and wrinkles.

The problem most guys have in choosing a moisturizer is deciding on which one they should use. In many cases, a dude will either grab something from the wife or girlfriend or skip moisturizing altogether. Here’s the deal – moisturizing your face doesn’t have to be complicated.

My suggestion here is to stick to something basic and easy to use. Cetaphil makes a great moisturizer for daytime use that has a SPF factor of 50 to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. They also make a moisturizer for all skin types that can be used in the evening use that you can apply before you go to bed.

The cost of the daytime moisturizer is around around $5.00

Bonus tips!

If you want to spend a little extra and do something about lines appearing around your eyes (another dead give-away for aging) consider Every Man Jack Eye Cream. This is a reasonably priced product that helps to get rid of the lines and reduce puffiness. I recommend refrigerating this product so that is applies to your skin cold. This helps to further reduce the appearance of bags.

Facial Hair

If you are seeing a bunch of grey hairs on your beard, I highly recommend picking up some beard coloring from Just for Men. This product should cost you no more than $10.00. It is simple and easy to use – plus it works!

Final Thoughts

Aging is a fact of life. Some guys age more quickly than others and a lot of what influences the aging process is a result of genetics. There are natural things however that you can do to help slow down father time. Getting plenty of sleep, eating a healthy diet and exercise can certainly help!

So there you have it – a fairly simple, easy to follow anti-aging program for guys that can help erase a good 10-years off your appearance. You can all of these products online or at any local drug store.

If you have any tips or suggestions, please be sure to share here. I would love to hear what you do to keep yourself looking younger than your years!

Great product suggestions for the dudes. I use that mask myself and it a a great product; it really tightens up the skin and leaves it feeling very fresh. You might consider putting some Amazon capsules to help people make some quick purchases. ;-)

I'm jealous I did not write this! Great article.

With the cleanser, a secret I tell people is to skip the facial cleanser and buy the shampoo "Dermarest." It has a 3% solution of Salicylic Acid (twice as strong as a facial cleanser) and is twice as cheap. Salicyclic Acid is liquid aspirin, a beta hydroxy acid that is excellent at removing the top layer of epithelial tissue of the skin, making one look younger. Not only that, but because it's topical aspirin, you also reverse photo damage from the sun as well as redness and irritation. (however, you will need to wear sunscreen, SPF 15+++)

Along with cleanser, a good toner can tighten up pores and give you youthful looking skin. Witch Hazel has a good source of tannins which can also do the job of also protecting the skin from free radicals.

Thanks, LL Fugate. You made some very accurate observations!

LL Fugate from Central Virginia on September 08, 2014:

Useful hub! Voted up.

Most women wouldn't dream of forgoing their "products", and it's high time that men give them try as well. The men that I know wouldn't snub them, it's just that they don't give it a second thought. It's not something that they talk about with one another the way that women do. (Oh my God, you have to try this new -whatever- that I've been using!)

Great advice also on the hairstyles. The proper hairstyle really does contribute to a more youthful appearance.

John Hollywood (author) from Hollywood, CA on September 07, 2014:

Thanks so much Midget38. That was my hope in offering this hub!

This is great! We are getting educated each day.

Jean Bakula from New Jersey on September 02, 2014:

Oh, I'm glad. Olay is the best, though Neutrogena and Nivea are also good. But if people think I look that much younger than I am, I'll stay with Olay :).

John Hollywood (author) from Hollywood, CA on September 02, 2014:

Hi, Jean!

I am glad guys are using products too. They really are necessary for wellness. By the way, I read your hub on Olay products and was very impressed!

Jean Bakula from New Jersey on September 01, 2014:

I'm so glad men are finally using products. Cetaphil is especially good for sensitive skin, the kind blondes and redheads have. I have a guy in the family with shoulder length blonde hair, who had skin problems, and Cetaphil works wonders. He also had breakouts from shaving, and went back to the old 1950s style shavers from my Dad's generation. The kind barbers use. Those guys know their stuff, and it really shows in your appearance.

John Hollywood (author) from Hollywood, CA on September 01, 2014:

Hi, Theresa,

You are absolutely right - thanks for mentioning the other things that are helpful with anti-aging!

Theresa Jonathan from Maseru, Lesotho on September 01, 2014:

Good grooming is ideal for people of all age. This article is raising awareness to make effort to age gracefully. It would help to cut alcoholic drinks and drinking water as well. Ah, do maintain your cool. Do not let the sun go down with a grudge. This is an advise from the Creator who knows the number of your hair. I therefore suggest that you empower yourself with the power of love. I do know that, some people were cured of cancer by simply laughing a lot and not allowing negative thoughts to overwhelm them.

John Hollywood (author) from Hollywood, CA on August 31, 2014:

Yes - heck yes we can be vain! LOL. Thanks for stopping by!! haha

CrisSp from Sky Is The Limit Adventure on August 30, 2014:

I knew it! Men could be vain too, eh? :)
