Low Back Pain - Best Device for Daily Relief

Deidre has a Masters in applied linguistics and translation for her 20 years overseas. She's worked as a certified provider of the MBTI®.

The Sacro Wedgy helps bring significant pain relief that lasts. This device allows the pelvic muscles to relax, returning them and the sacrum to a balanced position. It is about the size of a person's hand and is made of molded rubber that comes also with a foam elevation pad.

Creation of the Sacro Wedgy was based on an osteopathic technique. The hand is placed under the sacrum to lift and elevate the sacrum bone. The hips are then free to drop and relax. A firm neck pillow is also used to stabilize the upper back and neck.

Use of this device has enabled many to enjoy jogging again, and reduce or even eliminate the pain of those who sit at a keyboard all day. Along with other exercises and physical therapy, the Sacro Wedgy has become a must to reduce or even eliminate low back pain.

Relieves pain

After months of no success in finding significant relief with medication, chiropractic treatments, spinal decompression therapy, or other prescribed treatments, many have found this device works. It helps to relax and balance the muscles of the back, pelvis and legs to reduce and relieve

  • severe lower back pain,
  • sciatica,
  • hip pain,
  • back spasms,
  • chronic back pain,
  • scoliosis, or
  • fibromyalgia.

Product description

This is a simple easy to use device. If you feel you need to lie down, you just lie on the device putting it right under where the lower back transitions and disappears into your buttocks. In the illustration at the right, it is the muscles that attach up at the lower spine and hip—the psoas major together with the iliacus next to it—that release and relax. This then helps other back pain symptoms.

The secret is regular use for about 20 minutes each time. It takes that long for the muscles to release and let go. Whenever you have pain and stiffness in your lower back, lay or sit on it until the muscles relax. Then you can do some stretches while on it to support your sacrum.

When you do have pain again, it's minor, and you then just increase your usage.

Those who benefit from the Sacro Wedgy

The Sacro Wedgy device has helped those who have already tried

  • massage,
  • pain pills,
  • chiropractic,
  • acupuncture,
  • tennis balls,
  • yoga,
  • stretching,
  • a month of strenuous exercise,
  • Valium, and
  • countless other back stretching or realignment gadgets.

Some say they have worked with yoga, done other stretching, consulted other doctors, and even bought an inversion table. Though all these treatments provide some relief and no x-rays or examinations show any significant problem, many say this still did not alleviate the pain.

Even when you have gone to a chiropractor quite a bit to get adjusted and it works for a few days, if the adjustment then slips out again, this device can help.

Sacrum, the bone between the hips

Claims of actual buyers

My experience

The adjustments my chiropractor made to my sacrum for several months would sometimes help and sometimes not. Stretches and massage were tried, but one hip was not able to relax. As soon as I tried the Sacro Wedgy, progress in relaxing that hip was made. The first two times laying on it was quite painful. Part of the problem was knowing just how high the sacrum bone is—the green #1 bone in the illustration to the right—when laying down. The other was my muscles were really, really tight. But then the long muscle in front of the thigh started relaxing. Once I learned exactly where my sacrum bone is, the psoas muscle of that tight hip went through a painful relaxation period the first several times I used the device—the good kind of pain. Each time I used it after those initial times, the pain was less. I am now sitting on the device as I type, and I find it a welcome change that the hip is no longer tightening up from sitting at the keyboard.

The key to its use

The key to using the Sacro Wedgy seems to be learning how to relax while on it. Once you can do that, things start to fall back into place. Pain is gone. At first, some report they could not relax on it for the recommended 20 minutes without pain, but once they were able to stay on it for at least 20 minutes, the pain was eventually relieved. Many report a very high percentage of pain relief. Some report their leg length equals out since their hips are put back in line.

The more you use it, the better you get at placing it and relaxing. Used several times a week, or even every day, users have found that it gradually helps the lower back get aligned.

Some things to keep in mind

Should you decide to try this product, read the instructions very carefully and really work with your body until you are sure where it should be placed. It takes a little experimentation to get it right. You may find it more effective to actually sit on it on the sofa, an office chair, and elsewhere, more than the lying down position.

You can also get more help with proper use of this device and talk with the Sacro Wedgy experts at their 800 number.

Faults found with the Sacro Wedgy

  • One parent with lower back problems found the Sacro Wedgy provided help to get a good stretch, but only enough to rate it at three stars. This parent's 16 year-old son, though, found it provided even more relief. Since he runs sprints he has resulting back problems from "pelvic misalignment" (according to a chiropractor). He really likes his Sacro Wedgy and takes it to track meets to use during his stretching routine. So, they both feel it helps stretch the pelvis area and helps the hips drop back into alignment. However, one feels more significant pain relief than the other.
  • Some have felt the need of something that presses the sacrum up higher, so the pelvis floats better. They find they must add another lift (like a small book) underneath it.
  • Some very tall women find they fit the male size Sacro Wedgy better.
  • There are some reports that the Sacro Wedgy did nothing for their sciatica or lower back problem. This device did help to square up their hips, but it does not compare to the help they get from an inversion table.

Have you tried the Sacro Wedgy?

Thanks for letting us know! Will look for an alternative and thanks for your suggested alternative :-)

Doris James MizBejabbers from Beautiful South on November 04, 2015:

Ms Dee, darn, it's currently unavailable at Amazon. There was a "hip opener" exercise we used to do in Yoga class on an elevated surface like a stool. This looks like it would do the job more efficiently.

Pamela99, it sure has relieved pain for me, which is important for me since I have Fibromyalgia.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on April 10, 2012:

This is something I haven't heard of but it sounds like a wonderful pain reliever. Thanks for the information.

Deidre Shelden (author) from Texas, USA on April 05, 2012:

editorsupremo, the above diagram shows the psoas muscle connection as far up as 5 vertebra from the bottom. I think that may be as far up as the kidney area, so it just may be possible. The muscle is around the spine, and what would be in pain--not necessarily the spine, itself. I checked and yes, I see the Sacro Wedgy listed there, too.

editorsupremo from London, England on April 05, 2012:

Very interesting hub. Following surgery I suffer terribly from backache, but I'm sure whether this device would be suitable as the pain is at the side of the back around the kidney area rather than the spine itself. Nevertheless it sounds like a great device to relieve pain. Do you know if it is available in the UK?

Deidre Shelden (author) from Texas, USA on April 04, 2012:

2besure, it does help all the way up my spine :). Hope it does for your sister.

Pamela Lipscomb from Charlotte, North Carolina on April 04, 2012:

I must send this to my sister. She has had major back pain and spin problems. I how it works for her! Get information, Ms Dee! Voted up, shared socially!

Deidre Shelden (author) from Texas, USA on February 12, 2012:

teaches, it sure has helped me at certain times. So much better than pills, I agree.

Dianna Mendez on February 12, 2012:

I am always looking for natural remedies to relieve people's ailments. This is a wonderful answer for those who have back pain in the sacrum area and hips. I can see how something like this wedgy would relieve the problem by applying a gentle pressure while supporting the bone structure. Great hub and voted up!

Kelly Kline Burnett from Madison, Wisconsin on November 22, 2011:

Fascinating. Good information. Thank you!

Voted up!

Shasta Matova from USA on November 22, 2011:

That is interesting, I hadn't thought to try anything like that.

Deidre Shelden (author) from Texas, USA on November 18, 2011:

Melbel, do have your dad check out the videos at the Sacro Wedgy expert link I included so he can see what he thinks about it. The girdle support is a good idea for upper back pain :).

Melanie Palen from Midwest, USA on November 18, 2011:

Really interesting hub, I'll have to give that a look, my dad has really bad back pain and this may be able to help him!

I do, on occasion, have upper back pain and I find a girdle to be of help when this happens. When I got married, I got this really complex girdle to go under my wedding gown and it's so comfortable for me when I have back pain. (I was in a car accident as a teen.)

Sueswan on October 31, 2011:

Great hub Ms. Dee.

I don't suffer from back pain but I think using this device is much smarter than taking drugs. Drugs only deal with the symptoms and not the cause. Then, there are always the side effects to deal with.

Voted up and awesome.

Deidre Shelden (author) from Texas, USA on October 30, 2011:

I tried it when chiropractics got my low back pain down only so far and could not get it loosened up. When I saw this device it suddenly made sense what was still needed to loosen the muscles up. This has done the trick and brought MUCH relief :).

CASE1WORKER from UNITED KINGDOM on October 30, 2011:

I have tried this yet, having been free of pain for the last two years- thank the Lord! I think that when you have back pain you will try anything for relief. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Pastor Dr Carlotta Boles from BREAKOUT MINISTRIES, INC. KC on October 29, 2011:

Voted-useful Ms Dee! GREAT Device! Pray things are going well with you!! God Bless you always!! I have missed you!

Deidre Shelden (author) from Texas, USA on October 28, 2011:

breakfastpop, if you do end up trying it, it would be great to have an update from you here on how it worked for you.

breakfastpop on October 28, 2011:

This is very interesting. I have to thank you. I am definitely going to look into this.
