If people knew the many health benefits of lemons they would always keep them on hand. Lemons are packed with strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers that help cure many illnesses, diseases and ailments. Lemons contain bioflavonoids, calcium, citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, pectin, and limonene that fight infection in the body and promote immunity.
The citrus fruit can be used in juice, teas, drinks, dressings, on fish and other meats, in baths, and in a paste applied to a sore body. Lemon can be used as a weight-loss aid because the juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser.
Here are some other health benefits of lemons. See how many of them you know.
Get Rid of Acne
It is so easy to get rid of acne with lemons. The fruit is very effective in treating acne because it contains citric acid. The vitamin C in lemons and other citrus fruits keep the skin glowing.
The alkaline in lemon kills some of the bacteria that causes acne. You can drink lemon juice with water in the morning. You can also mix lemon juice with honey and apply the combination on acne and leave it on your skin overnight. You will see an improvement in the morning.
There is no need to be anxious, nervous and tense when you can grab a lemon and feel better. Lemons can keep you calm under a lot of circumstances. Inhale lemon essential oil for an increase in concentration and alertness.
Whenever you are feeling tense, simply sprinkle a few drops of lemon essential oil on a handkerchief and inhale. Do the same thing for your pillow at night. Lemon oil will keep you calm if you are nervous about speaking in public or performing confidently before an audience.
For High Blood Pressure
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, can be managed with the healing power of lemons. Hypertension is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is usually elevated.
You have probably heard that garlic and onions are effective when it comes to fighting hypertension. If you add lemons to garlic and onions, you will have a good healing combination.
Add three crushed garlic cloves and one chopped onion to one quart of cold skimmed low-fat or soy milk. Bring to a boil and let it stand for five minutes. Strain and chill. Add freshly squeezed juice of three lemons. Sip throughout the day to lower high blood pressure. You will certainly be surprised by the results.
Lemons Can Provide a Fresh Breath
No one is exempt from having bad breath. Unfortunately, some people have it but don't know it. Bad breath can be caused by certain spicy foods, alcohol, cigarettes, or dry mouth.
To prevent being embarrassed because of bad breath, known as halitosis, rinse your mouth several times a day with juice from one lemon in a glass of lukewarm water. Some people hate to chew on a lemon slice, but doing so after every meal will freshen their breath.
For Bug and Insect Bites
If you are ever bitten by a mosquito, other insects or bugs, rely on drops of lemon essential oil to come to your rescue. Mix 1-2 drops of lemon oil with one teaspoon of honey. Massage the mixture on the affected area.
To repel insects before they bite you, add 20 drops of lemon oil to 1 cup of water and spray into the air. It smells great to humans, but the scent repels and bugs and insects from biting you. Another home remedy is to soak a cotton ball in lemon oil and keep it near.
Be Gone Canker Sores
The antibacterial and antiviral properties of lemons can speed up the healing process of cankers. Mix lemon juice in a glass of lukewarm water and rinse your mouth with the solution. Repeat this process at least three times a day.
You might experience a burning sensation when the mixture first comes in contact with the canker. After a few rinses, you might not notice any burning.
Lower High Cholesterol
If you suffer from high cholesterol like many other people, use lemons in food or drink the juice in tea or other beverages. Your high cholesterol can be lowered because of the pectin power of the sour fruit.
Also, lemons have other metabolism and circulation-boosting nutrients that prevent high cholesterol. If you use lemons regularly, your doctor will be very amazed at the lower number during your next physical examination.
Cool Down a Fever
Lemon is always a helpful remedy for fevers. Cool down a fever by mixing the juice of one lemon to a cup of hot water with honey. Drink all of the solution at once. Repeat every two hours until your temperature is back to normal or at least close to it.
Remedy For Cold and Flu
Lemons are a good remedy for colds and the flu. Whenever you get the first symptoms of a sore throat, a stuffy nose, or an aching body, reach for a lemon. Squeeze the juice from one lemon and add one teaspoon of sea salt to one cup of lukewarm water. For relief, gargle three times a day for one minute each time. After gargling, feel free to swallow the solution for added benefits.
The reason lemons work so quickly when you have a cold or flu is because the healing power of lemons works both internally and externally. Allow a lemon to be your friend at the first sign of a cold or flu.
For Corns and Calluses
Stop suffering from corns and calluses on your feet. Apply a lemon poultice overnight to give your feet some comfort the next day. Place a slice of lemon on the corn and bandage it.
You can also put some lemon essential oil on the corns and calluses with a cotton ball or Q- tip. Your feet will appreciate you for using lemon oil on them.
If you suffer from eczema or another skin condition, get relief by using a lemon wrap. Add 8 drops of lemon essential oil to 1 cup of lukewarm water and 1 tablespoon of honey. Honey is effective because it has anti-inflammatory properties, and it strengthens the healing power of lemons. This combination will help eliminate eczema.
Soak a cloth in the liquid and squeeze out the excess. Put the cloth on the affected area. Leave on for about 15 minutes twice or three times a day. The lemon and honey will ease the infection as well as eliminating the urge to scratch.
Say Goodbye to Fatigue
Do you know that when you are tired, you can consume lemon juice after you pierce the top of the citrus fruit with a straw? This acts as a quick pick me up.
Drinking a small amount of lemon juice will quench thirst sometimes much quicker than drinking water. You can add lemon juice to regular drinking water to cause it to act as an antiseptic and prevents illnesses that might be due to an allergy.
If you ever feel tired and cannot concentrate, add 4 drops of lemon oil to a glass of water and drink it every few hours. You can also add lemon oil to a water-filled aromatherapy lamp in your bedroom for the same results.
No More Insomnia
If you can't sleep at night, drink a glass of water with lemon in it. The combination will calm you so you can sleep peacefully. Instead of counting sheep, drink water that has been flavored with lemon and see what happens.
The juice of a lemon is a powerful alkaline effect in the body. It is also a natural agent against excess acid in the body that is partly responsible for rheumatism. Put juice from one lemon in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it three times a day. If there is severe pain, double the juice by adding it from two lemons and drink it three times a day.
Lemon juice can also ease pain in your body if you rub the affected area daily with several drops of lemon oil. It is easy to apply if the pain is in your legs, knees or arms. If the pain is on your back, you will have to ask someone else to apply it for you.
Save Your Stomach
If you have stomach aches after eating, add the juice from one lemon to a glass of lukewarm water. Drink after each meal. The acid from the lemon acid will stimulate the production of stomach acid to relieve stomach aches.
Good Riddance Varicose Veins
No one has to be stuck with varicose and spider veins. Lemon oil can help to eliminate both. Add eight drops of lemon oil to a warm bath. Soak in the tub for about 15 minutes. When you get out of the tub, pat yourself dry instead of rubbing the area with a towel.
If you have had experience with the healing power of lemons or lemon juice for an illness, feel free to share it in the comments section below.
Once I had an unexplained cough. Just before preaching, I drank lemon juice that was not mixed with water. Thankfully, I was able to preach a 35-minute sermon without coughing. Since then, I make it a habit to keep one of those little plastic containers of lemon juice in my purse that I purchased from the produce section of the grocery store. It doesn't take up much space, but it always comes in handy if I feel a cough coming on before speaking in public.
