Ketones: Unlock the Energy You Didn't Know You Had

Introduction To Ketosis

The ketogenic diet has helped me personally orient my life around the idea of being healthy. Through the ketogenic diet, I achieved a healthy weight. However, I continue to follow a ketogenic diet, not because I need to lose more weight, but because of the surplus of energy, I possess while in ketosis. Despite the enumeration of benefits a ketogenic diet has been proven to have, I believe it all comes down to the fact that ketosis simply provides the body with a more efficient fuel source. I am talking about ketones, the body’s equivalent to rocket fuel. Ketones are nothing more than an alternative energy source that is most abundant during carbohydrate restriction. However, this doesn’t mean ketones are not constantly circulating in your body. For instance, during sleep, your liver produces a mild amount of ketones for your brain and heart to utilize.

In the following paragraphs, I’ll demonstrate how ketones are a superior source of fuel for the body when compared to glucose. However, you must realize that glucose will always be your main fuel source as long as you continue to eat carbohydrates. This is because carbohydrates trigger an insulin response in your body which actively discourages ketone production.


Ketones Provide More Energy

Now that we know what causes the absence of ketones, why do we care? Ketone suppression matters because you are denying your body the chance to operate more efficiently. 100 grams of glucose will provide the body with 8.7 kilograms of ATP energy. Whereas the 100 grams of the most prevalent ketone, betahydroxbutarate, will provide 10.5 kilograms of ATP. With an equal amount of both, ketones provide the body with 21% more usable energy.

Looking back on my life, having 21% more energy would have helped me accomplish a lot. Running on ketones can provide your body with that extra push you need in order to be productive. Instead of feeling physically depleted and mentally exhausted at the end of the day, you will still feel energized.

I know it might be difficult to conceptualize because you’ve only known what it’s like to operate on glucose, but I promise there is a whole new level of focus and cognitive awareness out there for you.


Brain Power

For much of my life, I have dealt with absent-mindedness. Perhaps this is because I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD, but it appears the more people I talk to, the more I begin to realize that everybody has moments of distraction and forgetfulness. Many studies have suggested social media is a major influence on the shrinking attention spans among my generation. However, this problem can be dealt with by reviewing the role ketones have in your brain.

A study conducted by the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Florida designed an experiment to study the cerebral effect of ketones on the brain function of rats. What they found were the rats that were operating on ketones displayed significant improvements in cognitive function. Obviously, this study only refers to rats, but several previous conclusions in rat studies such as weight loss, lowered blood sugar, and increased HDL cholesterol, have all been confirmed to affect humans in the same way. This should be very intriguing, as the majority of the population is theorized to not have met their full cognitive potential. This is because most people aren’t using ketones as their primary fuel source.

Plan of Action

The only way to utilize ketones as your primary fuel is to adopt a ketogenic diet. At around the 7-14 day mark, your body will enter into full nutritional ketosis, which means you have successfully enhanced your body chemistry in order to provide yourself a more efficient fuel. However, some people may not want to follow a ketogenic diet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still benefit from ketone magic. There are many ways to increase ketone levels without following a ketogenic diet such as

  • Coconut Oil
  • Intermittent Fasting
  • Ketone Supplements
  • Fasted Exercise

While all of the above will increase your ketone levels, your ketones will soon diminish as soon as you eat carbohydrates. That is why a ketogenic diet must be implemented in order to achieve long-lasting effects over consecutive days. As more research is conducted, I believe ketones will become universally known as the optimal fuel for your body.
