What is Itchy Skin Rash?

Itchy skin rash is an irritating and uncomfortable feeling that can provoke an affected individual from scratching non-stop to ease the itch. The itching of skin from rash is rather a symptom of another condition that can result to development of change in color and texture of the skin often as a result of break in the skin from inflammation.

Itchiness of the skin is medically known as pruritus which gives a discomfort resulting to an irresistible scratching which is an automatic response of every individual to itchiness. Itchy skin often results from development of rash on the skin or may also be a symptom of another underlying condition while it may also be suggestive of other diseases involving the liver and kidney.

Rash is a break in the skin resulting from skin inflammation characterized by a change in the texture and discoloration. Rash can either be infectious or non-infectious while it is categorized according to its causes. The clinical feature of rash also varies depending on what caused it to develop. Rash can develop as small bumps that may be fluid-filled and reddish in color and other rash may have an expanding ring. Rash can develop in the creases of the skin and moist area and are commonly found in arms, legs, neck and the upper chest. The development of rash may be contained in a small area only or may spread widely to the body depending on the type of rash that has developed.


The symptoms of itchy skin rash vary according to the underlying condition and cause of the rash that is leading to itchiness of the skin.

Itchy skin may start primarily without the initial development of rash or any changes in the skin that is noticeable. The general symptoms of itchy rash however, include the following:

  • Red discoloration of the skin
  • Development of rash either in a small area of the skin or may be widespread.
  • Itching and burning sensation over the affected area.


Rash have variations where some may be itchy while others may not. There are different conditions that can make skin itch from rash and the common rash that gives itchy skin includes the following:

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that is characterized by plaques of thickened skin with reddish discoloration. It is a non-contagious inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects the elbow, scalp and knees and is usually causes itchy skin from the rash or dry skin of the condition.

Rhus dermatitis is a skin reaction after exposure to a certain resin or oil that is usually from plants especially poison ivy, sumac and poison oak. The skin reaction is characterized by rash with skin itching and inflammation and the condition usually lasts for several days. Rash and itching including inflammation is the allergic response of the body from the oil of the plants mentioned and those plants containing the resin or oil contained within.

Chicken pox is characterized by the development of rash which is rather itchy. It is a skin condition that is contagious and is caused by viral infection. Chicken pox on the other hand can now be controlled with the discovery of vaccination which can protect one from acquiring the contagious skin condition.

Eczema is the general term denoting all types of dermatitis which is common in infants and young children although it can also affect people from different age group. It is believed to be a genetic abnormality involving the epidermis and the skin inflammation condition is characterized by a reddish skin of the affected area and is marked by an intense itching as its primary sign of onset.

Scabies is a contagious skin condition that itches intensely and is usually due to infestation of a parasite known as the scabies mite.


It is important to know the nature and type of itchy skin rash to determine the medical approach in properly treating and managing it. Prompt treatment is advisable to relieve off the itchiness in which a prolonged episode of itching and scratching may lead to other skin condition especially bacterial infection or other forms of infection when the affected area has become wounded from all the scratches just to relieve the itchiness. Treatment of itchy skin rash on the other hand, depends on the nature and cause or the underlying condition that gives an itchy feeling.

Itchy skin rash can be relieved with the direct cure of the underlying condition contributing to itchiness. The treatment or relief of itchiness may include the following:

Corticosteroid cream is applied topically over the affected area and is commonly recommended by doctors to pacify the itchy sensation.

Antihistamine is prescribed for itchy skin rash caused by allergy. The medication is given orally and is especially recommended for itchiness from hives and allergy.

Most itchy skin rash responds well to medication and home-care treatment can also help in the relief such as:

  • Application of wet compress
  • Use of hypoallergenic soaps
  • Wearing of cotton clothes
  • Cool bath
  • Avoidance of trigger of allergy and other forms of rashes that can give itchiness in the skin.

my sister since 2014 affected with itchy skin up to date, even though she used various medication there is no improvement.

i had surgery 2 weeks ago and I got a rash right after the surgery. Now it is spreading all over and I itch everywhere. I have tried Benadryl and cortisone cream is there anything to soak in?
