The Real Pain in Your Butt

If you have never had Piriformis Syndrome then consider yourself very lucky. The pain is crippling and it doesn't go away without treatment. It can last days or weeks and sometimes months, but you will need to undergo a routine of stretching, medications and hope.

The Sciatic Nerve runs on each side of your buttocks and down your legs. When the nerve get's impinged or pinched by the muscle, it gets inflamed and begins its journey of immobilizing you. The pain can be greater then a ten, you may be unable to walk and it will be the worse pain next to childbirth that could ever happen to you.

Sitting will basically not happen at this point. You should call your doctor to schedule an appointment early on when you first notice symptoms so you can be treated quickly.

What is Piriformis Syndrome

The piriformis muscles run down your buttocks and down the sides of your legs. When the muscles have had trauma, lengthy periods of sitting (as in a desk job), you are female or over use of those muscles, it puts pressure on the sciatic nerve and causes you a great deal of pain.

I wish I could say it was the same thing as Sciatica but it is not. Piriformis differs from Sciatica because the muscle is involved not the nerve its self.

Treatment of piriformis syndrome may include a variety of interventions, including physical therapy, stretching, injections, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, and as a last resort, surgery.

If properly diagnosed, piriformis syndrome is usually readily treatable, though some individuals may suffer from recurrence of symptoms or from chronic discomfort.

The one thing everyone can do to prevent Piriformis Syndrome is to stretch those muscles daily.

Our bodies were designed to let us know when something is not right and pain is one of those things. When you are in pain it begins to break down healthy tissue by compensating for the injury. When people have desk jobs, getting up and stretching every couple of hours will help you keep your muscles toned.

Some stretching you can do in the morning before you even get out of bed. Laying on your back you can bring one knee up to your chest and hold it for ten seconds and do that three times with each knee.

You can also take a towel and put it around your foot while holding both ends with your hands. bring your let up straight in the air. With both of these exercises you will feel the stretch.

When you are at work you can also place both hands on your desk and push your chair backwards and forwards. Each time slowly and holding for ten seconds. This can only happen if you have wheels on your chair.

So you ask is it heat or ice? Well in my experience it is what ever makes it feel better. If you are having muscle spasms then you want heat to release the muscle. You want ice to help with inflammation. Doing both is okay but remember it is 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for both. Laying on a heating pad for hours is not helpful.

How Long Will it Take to Get Better?

This syndrome does not have any time in which it will go away. It boils down to how long you have waited to seek treatment and how well you respond to what your doctor has told you to do.

Sometimes steroids' are needed in some cases to help with inflammation.

Our muscles have a massive job to handle. Our bodies need them to even exist. Our heart is a muscle and if you don't take care of it what happens? Cardiac arrest or worse. You must take care of your muscles just as you do any other vital organ in your body. It doesn't mean you have to get gym happy because over use of any muscle can cause issues.

Take care of yourself. You only get one earth suit. It was given to you to enjoy life not be burdened with pain. Those muscles, once angry, can be the difference in your love of the outdoors or staying in bed. Choose the path of which you go to make your life great.
