A lack of knowledge is killing my people!

Many people that I speak to, have this problem. IBS, irritable bowel syndrome. The symptoms can be very diverse. Ranging from constipation, gas, inability eat certain foods, frequent stomach aches, as well as indigestion. Well, they are not alone. I, too, have had numerous problems, taken Mylanta by the gallon, and have had numerous tests. Only to be told, there's nothing we can do. Mylanta, does help, but only for the moment. The numbing agent, simethicone, isn't stored in the body, but it becomes a vicious circle. By getting to the root cause, the circle can be broken.

First, do not drink tap water. Purchase a Pur Water filter. Install on the faucet most used, the kitchen. The pipes that deliver your drinking water, have been underground for many years, and contain contaminants. If the pipes delivering your drinking water are copper, then there is copper in your drinking water. The carbon filter, filters out those contaminants, including bacteria, and other germs that may be the culprit. These filters can be purchased at any department, hardware, or grocery store. The water tastes crisper, and is better for you. It also eliminates cloudiness. Just by filtering your drinking water it will cut sickness in half.

Second, If you have taken multiple rounds of antibiotics, or steroids, they kill off the beneficial bacteria in your intestines, and cause an overgrowth of intestinal yeast, and fungus. Called dysbiosis. Which, can lead to a number of different ailments. Ranging from, indigestion, chronic diarrhea, constipation, chronic yeast infections (for men as well), athlete's feet, lactose intolerance, bloating, gas, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and a wealth of many other problems. These beneficial bacteria are what keep you "normal". Though, antibiotics kill off bad bacteria, they also kill off good bacteria, at the same time. You need to replenish these beneficial intestinal flora, with acidophulis. There are many very good brands, but I prefer Acidophulis Pearls by Enzymatic Therapy. Recommended by Dr. Teitelbaum. Who treats CFS, and Fibromyalgia patients. Take one pearl, once a day, for at least a month, maybe longer. Do not take at the same time as the antibiotic, or you will have a "war of the worlds" in your belly. Acidophulus is the basis of the "Activia Challenge" without the additives, and sweeteners. It is the good bacteria in yogurt, but in pill form. Other good brands, are Natrol, best to keep refrigerated, so as to keep the probiotics, live and active.

Very effective for a yeast infection, another wonderful side effect to antibiotics. Purchase acidophulis in capsule form. Open a capsule, and mix with plain yogurt. Swab the affected area. Place the remainder on a sanitary knapkin, and leave on. Olive leaf extract drops, are also effective, and very mild for sensitive areas. Apply directly to effected area, as often as needed. Can be used on any area of the body. Olive leaf kills bacteria, viruses, yeast, and fungus. Would probably be effective against athlete's foot, because of it's anti fungal properties. Wash the affected area, dry thoroughly, apply the olive leaf. Wear cotton socks, and underclothing. Synthetic fabrics hold moisture, thereby making the condition worse.

Third, eat plain yogurt, cottage cheese, plenty of fresh fruits, and vegetables. Live juices are also helpful. They all contain probiotics, beneficial bacteria. Make your own V8. Place raw carrots, tomato, and celery, in a blender, and drink. There is truth, in an apple a day, keeps the doctor away. Carrots contain beta glucans, which bind toxins, (yeast is a toxin), and helps your body to get rid of them. Cilantro, a common herb in salsa, does the same thing.

Fourth, cut back on caffeine. Coffee, pop, and tea have been found to be a contributing factor to IBS. Cutting back on caffeine can be tricky. There are withdrawals involved, headaches being one of the top ones. Cut back slowly, overtime, it will pass.

Fifth, check labels for aspartame. Proven to be a contributing factor, to sensitive people. There are many people who are allergic to this substance, and it's derivatives. Cyclamate and Saccharin, to name a few. A safer sugar substitute is Stevia, available in many health food stores. Other offending additives include msg, sorbitol, and mannitol.

Sixth, if the proceeding doesn't help, a food allergy maybe the problem. A scratch test is recommended, by these doctors. A test administered by an immunoligist. He can test you for many common foods, but not for chemicals. An elimination diet can be very helpful, also. Simply, eliminate suspected foods, for one week. Reintroduce the food in common form. For example, wheat. Eat only cream of wheat, and wait for any reactions. Symptoms of allergy include, heart palpitations, throat itching, or stomach ache. Keeping a food allergy diary can be helpful. Make note of foods eaten, and the reaction. Tell your doctor. Avoidance of the offending food, is advisable, but may not be possible. Most of the food we eat, have so many additives, that it is truly hard to avoid. If a food allergy is suspected, An immunoligist, can administer a minute dose, of the offending substance, once a week. Then every two weeks, and so fourth, until relief is found.

Other helpful supplements include the following:

For Acid Reflux, Gerd, Heartburn,

Calcium, magnesium, and zinc will relieve heart burn. Usually, sold in a combination form. Chew one tablet, and swallow. Relief has been reported within 15 minutes. Magnesium actually, dilutes the acid in your stomach, thereby reducing acid. It is also very healing, therefore it may actually heal the sphincter, which is damaged, and causing the problem, in the first place. Obviously, you would want to avoid whatever food, or drink that is causing the acid reflux. A food diary is very helpful. Although my guess is you already know.

It has been reported that apple cider vinegar helps with heart burn. If this particular remedy works for you then it implies that you are low on stomach acid. Supplementing with HCI is recommended. Do not use if you have an ulcer.

Other recommended supplements for heartburn, and acid reflux include:

Kelp, it helps reduce acid in the body. Acid Ease from Prevail Corporation, for relief from acid indigestion. The Tums, Mylanta, and many other acid relieving supplements contain aluminum. Which has been linked to Alzheimer's, read labels, and avoid aluminum as much as possible.

Other helpful supplements for IBS include the following:

Apple Pectin: Binds with metals, and other toxins, in the colon, and is excreted from the body. Follow package directions. An apple a day, keeps the doctor away. Eat them often.

Quercitin Bromelain Complex: Quercitin is found in apples, and very effective against allergic responses. If your IBS is related to a sensitivity in food. Bromelain is found in pineapple, and has anti-inflammatory properties. QBC is available at most health food stores, and anywhere vitamins are sold. The complex must contain magnesium, and vitamin C to be effective. The only brand I found, so far, that contained the correct dosage, was from Douglas Labs available through Qbc is a digestive enzyme, that helps to digest proteins, thereby lowering the allergic response. It is said that undigested proteins are the main cause of allergies, allergic rhinitis, hives, and food allergies. Our immune system overreacts to these proteins, as invaders, and causes the allergic response. Do not combine bromelain with prescription drugs, or over the counter drugs, as they have found that it can increase the active ingredient, thereby increasing the chances of overdose. Consult a physician, or pharmacist.

Supplements For Ulcer, and Diverticulitis:

L-glutamine, is an amino acid found in proteins. This supplement heals the intestines, there by helping with ailments such as diverticulitis, and leaky gut syndrome, including ulcers. Diverticulitis is a painful condition, characterized by tiny holes in the intestines, that can be diagnosed with a colonoscopy. Avoid foods with small seeds, such as sesame seeds, strawberries, even the husks from popcorn can cause a problem. Avoid these completely, if this is the cause of your problem. Those tiny seeds can get stuck in the intestines, and become infected. Researchers suggest 500mg a day, for diverticulitis. I took 500mg 3 times a day.

They suggest L Glutamine, 1500mg a day for ulcer, 500mg 3 times a day. Shown to actually heal the stomach lining. Another supplement is Mastic Gum. Shown to kill helicobacter pylori, which is the bacteria that causes ulcer. Chew 500mg twice a day for two weeks. Shown to be well tolerated. Derived from the pistachio tree. Along with honey, a natural antibiotic. Choose raw, unprocessed honey, 1 tablespoon at bedtime.

Constipation, and Gas:

Magnesium is a natural laxative, with out the harsh side effects. Your body can actually become addicted to Exlax, if used too often. Your intestines will begin to forget what to do. The solution is magnesium, the active ingredient in Milk of Magnesia, with out the aluminum. Purchase a good brand, recommended dosage is 250-500mg per day. Above this amount may cause diarrhea, individual results may vary, you may need more. Adjust the dosage amount to fit your particular situation. Include fiber in the diet from natural sources. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration has been linked to constipation.

For gas, ginger is the recommended herb. Can be purchased at the grocery store, in the spice isle. Mix 1 tsp. of the dried spice, with 1 cup of hot water. Sip as a tea. Mint is also an anti-flatulent. Do not ingest pure menthol, or pure peppermint leaves. Peppermint oil may be purchased in liquid form, as a drop. It is useful for children with colic, because it slightly anesthetize the intestinal tract. This is why most over the counter preparations contain mint. Place one drop of peppermint oil, or even a peppermint candy dissolved in about 4-8oz of distilled water, in a bottle. Feed as normal, will help to dispel gas. DO NOT INGEST MENTHOL OR PEPPERMINT LEAVES. Simethicone drops are also very useful, follow package directions. As is beano, a digestive enzyme, for the prevention of gas, before it starts.

Nature provides many of the necessary nutrients, and supplements, for common illnesses that plague us today.

If you have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, or colitis, I recommend Dr. Jordan Rubin's book, and his supplements. Primal Defense, an extra strength probiotic, the perfect food supplement, and implement his protocol. He fought, and won his battle, with Chrohn's disease. His supplements are of the highest quality, and completely organic.

In Conclusion

Since contracting Lupus, I have utilized many of the supplements, and protocols mentioned in my articles. Start with a good foundation. A good multi vitamin, no iron, D3, B12, and an Omega 3 fatty acid. Choose either a gummy, capsule, liquid, or quick dissolve formula. Hard pressed pills, aren't utilized as effectively. Improve diet, exercise, drinking plenty of filtered water, and fresh air are a solid foundation to maintain, or improve health.

Music, Creativity, Art, and Aroma are also very healing. Creativity includes cooking. Trying new recipes, new Flavors, reading, aroma, rewarding the senses, and mind.

15 minutes a day of music, improves moods, and restores mental health. Most effective was Upbeat, and positive, as well as Jazz. Proven by science.

Add one supplement for a specific disease, or condition. If there is a reaction, discontinue use. The last supplement that was added, will be the culprit of the reaction. Always check for interactions, and side affects before starting any supplement, or therapy.

My Lupus Story

I have utilized many of the supplements, and Protocol mentioned above, in the treatment of Lupus. An auto immune disease, that affects many systems, including IBS. I contracted the condition 20 years ago, after an allergic reaction to Augmentin. Prescribed for a severe sore throat, three antibiotics in one pill.

Among the most effective for me was magnesium, D3, and flax seed oil. D3 acts as a hormone in the body, and regulates immune function. Magnesium to ease pain, and muscle spasms. D3 to calm the immune system. Flaxseed oil, to help regulate hormones, and clear brain fog. Olive leaf, and grapefruit seed extract, as an anti infective. Cycling through each, one month at a time. Do not take both, as it is too strong. Choose 1 for each month. Taken for as long as infection is present. I ran a low grade fever for two years. A sign of infection.

Juicing was also beneficial, with fresh fruits, and vegetables. Adding more protein with yogurt, nuts, and seeds.

GABA, for anxiety, as needed.

There is no cure for Lupus, mine is currently in remission. I have experienced flares, when I don't take care of myself, but never as bad as the initial phase. I still maintain a basic supplement plan. A multi vitamin, no iron, D3, B12, and curcumin, as needed for pain. Sage tea if I have had a stressful day, very calming, helps with insomnia.
