How to Not Lose Weight With the Yoplait Two Week Tune Up Plan

I was thumbing through the latest issue of Babytalk Magazine one morning not long after my second daughter was born when I noticed a four-page Yoplait ad talking about how some woman wanted to lose some of her baby weight before she met up with some friends for a girls’ night out. And she was going to do this using the Two Week Tune Up Plan, developed by Yoplait.

I remember thinking at the time, “What? Is she crazy? All she’s going to eat for breakfast and lunch is Yoplait yogurt for two weeks?”

Now, don’t get me wrong. I like yogurt. I think it’s a wonderful, healthy snack, and Yoplait has some great flavors. But it’s not a meal. To be fair, you’re allowed to eat a little more than just the yogurt, but not much more.

Being the diet-crazy, postpartum mom that I am, I decided to give it a try myself. Yoplait claims that you can lose 5 pounds in two weeks following their plan. Soon after I saw that magazine ad, I started seeing similar television commercials claiming that the Yoplait diet is a great way to get your body ready for anything. Sounds good, doesn't it? Is it too good to be true? Maybe.

Here’s the story of my Two Week Tune Up diet experiment. If you follow my example and use this diet plan, you, too, can fail to lose weight.

Breakfast in the Yoplait Weight Loss Plan

For breakfast, you can have

  • 1 6-ounce container of Yoplait Light, any flavor
  • 1 serving of grains (e.g. a cup of regular Cheerios, MultiGrain Cheerios, or Rice Chex, or 1 Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bar)
  • 1 piece of whole fruit or 3/4 cup cut up fruit (e.g. small berries)

For breakfast, you can have

The Same Thing for Breakfast and Lunch?

These two meals look suspiciously similar, don’t they? To avoid complete boredom, I would vary the grain source. For one meal, I’d eat the Cheerios. For the other, I’d eat a granola bar.

For dinner, you can have one 6-oz serving of protein (a 3-ounce serving of chicken, for instance, is about the size of a deck of cards, so double this amount). Of course, your protein choice should be lean (e.g. chicken, turkey, or fish—not a big old hunk of filet mignon).

Along with the protein, you’re supposed to add two vegetable servings (any non-starchy vegetable, that is, which excludes most of my favorites). A serving is one cup of raw vegetables, or a half a cup of cooked vegetables.


You’re also supposed to have two vegetable servings in for snacks throughout the day, three additional (this really does mean additional) non-fat dairy servings (e.g. skim milk, string cheese, more yogurt), and you can have a small (1 tablespoon) serving of fat each day, like butter or salad dressing.

In addition to the dietary changes, you’re also supposed to put in at least a half an hour of daily walking.

My First Dieting Mistake

I was starting this diet off at a disadvantage because I sent my husband out to the grocery to get all the food for me. I gave him a list, but I wasn’t specific enough with it because he came home with Yoplait Original instead of Yoplait Light, which is a major component of this Two Week Tune Up. It was one of the fridge packs, which only has two flavors in it. Right. That wasn’t going to get boring at all!

He also got Quaker Chewy granola bars instead of the Nature Valley brand mentioned on the website, and he got Honey Nut Cheerios instead of regular or Multigrain Cheerios, so I got a little extra sugar that way. I also forgot to put skim milk on the list. Since we have a two-year-old, the only milk we have in the house is whole milk. Talk about extra fat!

Because of these changes, I was already starting this diet off with the mindset of, “Oh, I don’t have to follow this exactly. It’ll be okay if I skimp here and substitute there.” I should’ve known better. I’ve hardly ever been truly successful with a diet plan that I didn't follow to the letter. The only time I've ever been able to do that was when I decided to get on the Nutrisystem diet. You could say I was just setting myself up for failure.

My Second Mistake

I failed to get in my 30 minutes of walking each day because:

  1. The weather was not cooperating, and I don't own a treadmill.
  2. I didn't feel like I had the energy to walk, even if the weather had been cooperating.

So, I did not get in the required exercise.

I Fell Off the Diet Wagon Early

As you can see, I quit doing the Two Week Tune Up Plan after only about two days—well, not even. Why did I give up so easily?

I was eating every couple of hours because I was hungry. I split breakfast up into two shifts to actually make another snack. I ate the yogurt around 6:00 AM, then I had the cereal around 9:00 AM. I was really ready for that cereal by then. I reduced the amount of cereal by half because it was Honey Nut Cheerios instead of regular Cheerios in an attempt to reduce the amount of sugar I was eating.

For my snack, I cheated and had the very starchy pork and beans as my "veggie" serving. I just couldn't see a half-cup of green beans filling my stomach up very much. Oh. Did I mention I was hungry? I also reduced the milk serving because I was drinking whole milk instead of skim. I didn't want to overload on the milk fat.

My lunch and second snack were set two hours apart. I was never so happy to see snack time come! And those pork and beans tasted way better than any pork and beans should ever have the right to taste!

I cheated again at dinner and counted the tomato sauce in the leftover baked ziti as my two vegetable servings. I figured I didn't need the extra calories because I was loading up on so many carbs. And I added the nuts as my protein to kick up the fat a little. Your body does need some fat, after all.

By the time dinner came around, I was really feeling the deprivation. I was hungry, weak, dizzy, and more than a little shaky. Not feeling well at all. My husband came home, took one look at me, and told me I needed to get off this diet. So I did.

The key to losing weight and getting fit is you have to look at it as a lifestyle change.

Let's face it: something you are doing (or not doing) in your current lifestyle is causing you to gain weight.

The problem could be your eating habits, exercise habits (or lack of), or even hormonal imbalances. Whatever is holding you back from getting the results you want needs to change.

Unfortunately, they are no quick fixes, but there are a number of things you can do to achieve powerful fat burning.

The Bottom Line

The Yoplait Two Week Tune Up Plan is way too restrictive, in my opinion. The only thing good about it is that it has you eating small amounts every couple of hours, which is what a lot of nutritionists recommend, although, this is definitely hard to maintain. And the diet plan encourages you to eat vegetables and fruit.

I'm not really sure why you're supposed to increase your dairy intake so much (unless Yoplait just wants to sell more yogurt). I didn't eat all the extra servings of dairy just because I was getting really tired of milk, cheese, and yogurt. Ice cream would've been a nice addition, but I think it has a little too much fat to be considered a part of this diet.

You can lose weight with this plan (I lost two pounds in two days, only very loosely following the plan recommendations). The question is: Is it really worth it? I don't think so.

I can't see anyone staying on this plan for any length of time. You will most likely not keep off the weight you lose while you're on it. I've been off of it for a week now, and I've gained about five pounds. I weigh more than I did before I started the diet. So, it's back to the drawing board for me. I think I'll go back to the Nutrisystem diet, which I found to be a much more sustainable (albeit a little more expensive) weight loss plan.

If you do decide to try the Yoplait Diet, I wish you luck. Hopefully, you will have a better experience with it than I did.

Bailey: I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your comment. I agree that the Greek yogurts are probably better. I've started eating Greek yogurt every morning at breakfast, with either a granola bar or cereal, and that seems to work much better for me. I eat a pretty regular (sensible) lunch and dinner - not just yogurt. I'm currently losing about two pounds a week, and I'm not starving!

I want to try this diet just to jumpstart my weight loss to get me motivated so I started doing searches to see if anyone else had tried it. On every site with discussions about this diet talked about how bad yoplait is.You can use any yogurt you wish. I'm sure the quality greek yogurts would work better anyway.

Yoplait diet is a HUGE SCAM!

It contains high fructose corn syrup. It is highly processed with many additives. Do you really believe something like this can be beneficial just because it is advertised as low fat?

You described it as "too restrictive" implying you craved other foods. That is exactly what HFCS does to you. It is IMPOSSIBLE to diet this way. 30% of fructose that enters your body converts into fat.

There is so much more to this. Please read this article if you are interested.

Yeah, I could maybe understand a diet plan involving real yogurt, but Yolplait yogurt is so packed with sugar and coloring that I can't really stomach it- I would quit too! Great Hub and great critique of the diet plan. Voted up!
