Imagine a man drowning on a dark night. Now imagine that though the person knows swimming, he was hit by sudden wave of exhaustion and is not able to maintain his position in the water. He is battling with the sudden wave of dreadful tiredness to stay afloat. He tries to frantically find his way out of the water. He is helplessly beating the water with all four limbs trying to catch a break. A break, that means the difference between life and death.
The relentless and excruciating effort of the man has brought him very close to the surface but he is not able to regain his sense of navigation. He is completely disoriented. The man is lost and directionless, weak and helpless. Unseen forces seem to be pulling him to the murky depths of the water.
Now imagine that another person, who does not know how to swim, is watching from the beach. Being a small beach in a remote location there are no coastguards but a solitary beach house containing a flood-light lamp. He shines the lamp on the surface of water to guide the drowning man. What would happen next? The drowning person would try to move towards the light, right? All his efforts would be focused towards that spotlight because his life depends on reaching it. The focus of this man is now pure and unmatched. Nothing else is going through his mind except reaching the spotlight.
This focus is what would mark the difference between his escape and his being lost in the watery grave. The focus of this drowning man is unparalleled.
This story contains a superb lesson on the power as well as the need for focus. Many a time in our life, we find ourselves as helpless and disoriented as the drowning man. Keeping a sharp and impervious focus towards our goal will lead us to success even in the most challenging of situations.
Broken relationships, health problems, financial problems, property related issues, career related issues etc are all like the unseen forces that were pulling the man to the murky depths of the water. The incessant thrashing and struggling in the water so fittingly denote the struggles of human life. The spotlight however is the goal that would act as the sole guiding light to help you get back to the surface. So, focus, focus, focus….!
A bit of focus can change your life forever and might have profound effect on the results of your endeavours. You live your life as you live your years, you live you years as you live your days and you live your days as you live your moments. Thus, while you are making an effort, in that moment, all you need to do is ....focus a bit more.
Focus helps us in many ways. It helps us to:
- Manage disturbances in life.
- Manage sudden change in life.
- Get organized.
- Manage time.
- Stop procrastination.
- Set goals and follow them.
- Set a plan of action.
Anthony Robbins, the American life coach and self-help author once noted, ‘Focus on where you want to go and not on what you fear’ and Aristotle Socrates Onassis, commonly called Ari or Aristo Onassis who was a Greek prominent shipping magnate once remarked, ‘It is our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.’
By staying focused on our goal in the most difficult of times, we prove it to the universe that we deserve achieving the goal. Jack Canfield is an American author and motivational speaker who is the co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, which has more than 250 titles and 500 million copies in print in over 40 languages has observed, 'Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfilment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them.'
