How to Overcome Depression and Anxiety with Balanced Mind for Natural Ways of Life

Author is a certified Yoga Teacher and Evaluator by Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

Is depression a myth? Stop, check, and evaluate. Why do we affirm ourselves as depressed? It is an expensive word. Are we clinically disturbed people?

If we talk to people belonging to two preceding generations, they have not heard it in their time. But now every school going kid is familiar with that word—depression, that they say, I am depressed, instead of saying bored. The term depression has become a stylish word. Anxiety, depression, stress are depicted as fancy words, and drawing such emotions upon ourselves has become a trend by repeatedly telling it to ourselves and with others. But in fact, it has become very detrimental in nature. When we constantly talk about depression and the more we talk about it, it gets into our system eventually. Due to this, there is a higher possibility to face it, in reality, one day.

What is clinical depression? It is a mental health disorder to be treated by a medical professional like a psychiatrist, psychologist, psychotherapist, or mental health counselor. Exercises, breathing techniques, and meditation shall help parallelly.

Why are we associating sadness with depression? Every sadness or failure cannot be depression. Unknowingly people use this term so casually without having the accurate knowledge on the same.

“Every sadness is not depression. Every headache is not a migraine.”

Let Us Glance at Each Symptom

Persons feel sad very often, losing interest in activities that were fascinating before. They start worrying about specific or non–specific issues very easily, having reduced interaction, or not having conversations with others. They avoid social interactions, being withdrawn by self, and show reduced motivation to work. Constantly worrying about something else together with parallel over-thinking going on at the back of their mind. They are getting destructive thoughts such as harming the self or feeling harming someone, consecutively. Overloaded with self-doubts, when given a task or duty to carry out, like, will I be able to - do it? - focus on it? - complete this? Will he/she like it?

Disturbances could also arise due to traumatic past events like a major accident not letting to drive again or a sudden slip from a mountain cliff and brain injury or loss of loved ones or survived after drowning in flood for a long time or triggered by medical conditions like hysteria or something else become a cause for depression.

To, overcome all these and become happy, attention should be on treating the disease and not the symptoms attached to it.

How Will All These Result In?

Panic attack, anxiety attack, perpetual fear, anxiety, uncertainty, insecurity, relationship issues, family issues, financial issues, all may creep in to push one into depression. If all these become a pattern not letting you live in your dream living, then it is no doubt but a complete downfall. Feeling of worthlessness, helplessness, and hopelessness, all looming on the person's mind. Where all these are coming from?

What Shall Be the Source for Such Feelings?

Is it a lack of patience? In a way, Yes! The adverse effect of technology, due to which man has lost patience. Advance technology has brought him everything as soon as he turns the switches on. This cannot be so in everything else. Patience is essential to withstand feelings.

The expectation is the next best culprit. Too much expectation from self or others is not just that we make to ourselves. If someone else does a mistake, then victimizing and nagging at them, repetitively will only shape negative emotions like enmity, jealousy, and grudge. If we commit mistakes, then dwelling on the same thing and repenting for long bring us no good. On the contrary, it will push us more downwards. Forgiving is an art that is to be developed.

Where Does It All Start From?

Can we list persons or things or situations that drive us away from happiness? That is non-other than we, ourselves. As rightly said, our enemy is within us.

It is the "desire" where it all gets started.

Aspiring for something is natural. So, why are we facing depression? It is due to our habit that we defer our happiness as we are in constant effort attaining a thing and or fulfilling our desire. We strongly believe and condition our mind that we can remain happy only after obtaining it. This conditioning is the root cause. We can remain happy, even otherwise too. Even after achieving it, we still remain unhappy. There is a never-ending list of desires.

Materiality can only give us comfort but not happiness. Our aim should be to keep ourselves happy. Very often, materiality is mistaken to be happy and in turn, we run behind gathering more material comforts.

Could There Be an Answer To It?

There are numerous ways to it. Ideally, for avoiding complexities, simplicity would be the best answer. So, what best can be done instead? Following are a few manners if inculcated can turn all negatives into positive emotions and we can begin to see positive outcomes.

  • It is not only we who are facing this. Everyone has their share of uncertainties and insecurities. So, for heaven's sake, taking extreme steps at any cost is not a solution. Life is a wonderful opportunity given by almighty which is to be lived normally. Self-hatred in many ways is indeed detrimental by which we are harming ourselves.
  • Pouring our hearts out, speak out, call out, cry out, all such actions are only a temporary solution to overcome anxiety. Looking for a more enduring solution is what we need today.
  • Taking up difficulties as challenges and not as hurdles would be a clever move. It builds confidence in us. It may seem difficult at first, but in the end, it teaches us a great life lesson, which otherwise will not be taught in any of the schools or colleges.
  • What makes us happy? This thought makes us wait to be happy. Why wait to be happy until that is achieved? Trying to be happy in the process of achieving brings us more contentment and not the fear or insecurity of the achievement.
  • Pushing ourselves so hard that we forget to live is a big no. Let’s take time and breath. Is life all about competition? Living life is more important. More than happiness, contentment is what is essential. Every little happiness certainly contributes to its share in building confidence in fulfilling our dream life. So, let us not defer happiness.

  • Finding happiness in little things, as basic as cooking a meal for someone needy, having a sumptuous lunch with near and dear ones, listening to music or teaching our favorite subject to others, helping senior citizens in their activities, can all bring us joy. No one knows better than us to provide happiness to ourselves. We are our best friends.

  • As someone said that repeatedly telling something may happen to be a reality one day. Similarly, we should not miss a single opportunity to smile and laugh, rather create an opportunity for laughter. Daily prayers and a sense of gratitude towards everything in life will certainly grow gratification inside us. These eventually bring calmness within our minds.

Feel Natural to Live Happy

Every human is a combination of all sorts of emotions. It is said that every person undergoes either of these feelings at one point or the other in his/her lifetime. How we maintain ourselves during those times is what makes or breaks us. Spiritually speaking, after coming to this world, a man needs to undergo several turmoils to emerge as a better soul.

Thank you Mrs.Anjana Yash. As you rightly pointed out people in general, will be denying the fact that they have issues that need professional help. Its a kind of taboo in India that people who seek psychiatric help will be tagged as insane or lunatics forever. That is one major reason that people deny to accept their issues. And more so is their family also. A well-wisher should certainly do help in taking him/her to a professional seeking their course. That willingness to recover should preliminarily be from self without which any sort of treatment will not be of great help. Thank you for your feedback too.

Anjana Yash on July 11, 2020:

Nicely elaborated for better understanding of this term Depression.Well done Ashwini. Many a times one doesnt seek help because one is stil in denial that he or she has a problem requiring professional intervention. That itself delays recovery leading to secondary issues or further deterioration. So primarily we need to have perons in our lives to whom we can can turn to with confidence like a friend ,a family member...... . Ultimately road to recovery has to come from within.

I got to learn a lot from your article. Feeling fancy with a disease should not be the objective but being healthy by overcoming various challenges and reaching the target should be the aim. People unnecessarily get upset on petty worries and get offended and develop complexities. Subsequently, it will appear as a false obstacle in life. They also get acquired with many so-called lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, migraine and multiple disorders. as rightly pointed out by you, Ms Ashwini, understanding realities and realising the temporary hindrances will help to overcome difficult situations.
