A present moment is a place where more than 99% of your problems do not exist. Most people today talk about the benefits of living in the present moment. The power of now is gaining popularity like never before.
Living in the present moment will not take away all the worries. But, it will help you a lot in reducing anxiety, stress, and emotional suffering. These sufferings are a result of past failures. You should take a lesson from them and move forward. Similarly, thinking too much about the future increases your level of anxiety, stress, and depression.
So, focusing on your present is the ultimate solution to most of your sufferings.
The Present Moment
Thinking about your past or the future is not wrong. The problem does not lie in thinking about the past or the future. The problem arises when you can’t stop thinking about them even it causes you pain and is of no use to you.
You should develop an ability to learn from the mistakes you made in the past so as not to repeat them in the future. In this way, you will be able to plan your future appropriately.
Have a clear and meaningful vision of your goal. It will give your life a purpose to live, and you will experience less suffering.
Let us now discuss a few methods to stay focused on the present:
Method #1: Unite Your Body and Mind
Your body is always in the present. It is your mind that wanders either in the past or the future.
So, how to stay in the present?
One of the best ways is to work on uniting your body and the mind. If both get united, then your mind will be in the present moment as your body is there.
But, what does uniting your body and mind means?
If you go for a morning walk, then you only focus on walking. It is not that your mind is thinking about something else, and your body is walking.
Similarly, if you are eating, engage your body and mind both in the eating process.
It is one tip to unite the body and the mind.
Another tip is to focus on your breath as you breathe in the present. There is no past or future breath. You use your breath as a tool to focus your attention on the present moment.
For the remaining 1% of your problems, take appropriate action to find solutions.
Method #2: Rebuild Your Mindset
You have to accept the fact that the future is uncertain, and therefore you should live in the present. You should develop self-confidence to face whatever happens in the future with full courage. Even if something horrible happens, you will be able to formulate good out of it.
If you live with this confidence that whatever happens will happen for my benefit, you will be less anxious.
It is you who decide how to live your life. If you understand the power of living in the present moment, there will be no fear and anxiety. Your future worries will disappear. You will recognize the real purpose of your existence and will move forward with full confidence.
The same concept holds for past life events. You should see your past events as lessons for your better present. They gave you the chance to rebuild yourself. So instead of thinking about the past miseries, move ahead with the lessons you learned from them.
Only by changing your mindset, you will not waste your energy worrying about the past or the future. Utilize your complete energy to live and enjoy your present life.
Method #3: Develop Fearlessness towards Emotions
Another way to stay in the present is to develop a fearless attitude towards all the situations that occur in your life.
You limit your emotions by not accepting to feel them. You are not ready to face your fear of rejection or failure. You avoid doing things that you want to do as you do not want to experience these feelings. Do not run away from any situation. Open your heart to experience whatever occurs in your life, either good or bad. Be ready to feel the feeling of rejection or failure with ease.
What will happen if you develop this attitude?
You will not surrender to your emotions. You will not have a fear of any emotion. You will live life with a free mind and heart. You will start living your life the way you want to live and enjoy your present to the fullest.
So now you must have understood why living in the present is important. Most of the sufferings, stress, anxiety, and depression are a result of living either in the past or the future.
When you live in the past, you experience guilt, regret, and grief. When you live in the future, you experience anxiety, worries, and fears.
But, when you live in the present moment, you focus on the activities you are doing. Hence, there is no space for any negative feelings.
