Famously known by her stage name Adele, the singer made a stunning appearance in late 2019 that caused heads to turn not because of her singing talent but her slimmer physique, which was astonishingly different from how she used to look. The songstress famous for killer melodies such as ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and ‘Someone Like You’ certainly caught the attention of the media when she appeared with her new image. Word started to get out that she was following a specific diet that yielded the ‘new’ version of Adele.

The Grammy-winning singer and songwriter recognized for her evocative tunes and amazing voice has been known to be on the chubbier side since she first stepped into the limelight. Adele was always comfortable in her own skin and never let her weight cloud her talents. This however, did not sit well with some critics who judged her based on her looks. Her new figure certainly shocked her legion of fans and even critics, who took some time to digest the transformation. People began talking about her massive makeover and wanted to know the secret to this new beauty’s regime. Apparently, Adele came across this wonder diet that permitted the consumption of decadent treats such as chocolate and red wine which makes one think, why not? Let’s do it!
Well, let’s take a closer look at the make up of this diet plan, which is no longer a secret and perhaps we can lose a few extra pounds ourselves.
What is Sirtfood Diet?
The Sirtfood diet was first founded in 2016 by a pair of UK celebrity nutritionist and author, Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten. The diet which propagates a unique method of losing weight by consuming foods that are high in sirtuins, soon became an international diet sensation after Adele appeared with her stunning figure and claimed that it helped her to achieve this new look. Apart from Adele, there are other celebrities such as UFC fighter Connor McGregor, model Jodie Kidd, TV Chef and food writer Lorraine Pascale, Olympic Gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie, and even English socialite Pippa Middleton, who stand by the diet that delivers remarkable results for them too.
What Does the Diet Entail?
The interesting thing about the Sirtfood diet is that it allows its practitioner to enjoy eating all their favorite foods and yet lose weight at the same time. Is it really possible to treat ourselves to the foods we love and still shed pounds? It might sound absurd but the Sirtfood diet revolves around a meal plan that is aimed to activate the ‘skinny genes’ and let it do the work of burning off the extra calories that is consumed by the body.

After completion of the ‘maintenance phase’, followers are encouraged to continue consuming a diet of Sirtfood-rich meals and keep the regime of one glass of green juice a day. This helps to keep the body at its peak condition and promote long term well-being through significant improvements in overall health.
How does it work?
The concept behind this diet plan endorses the consumption of certain identified foods that has properties to trigger the activation of sirtuins, a form of protein in the body. Through the activation of said proteins, bodily functions that helps boost metabolism and reduce inflammation is effectively regulated. This process is referenced casually as the stimulation of the ‘skinny genes’ in the body which helps one to lose fat quickly. In order to activate the sirtuins, one will need to consume foods that are high in sirtuins such as kale, lovage, extra virgin olive oil, and medjool dates, just to name a few. The logic of this diet plan is that it limits the caloric intake and encourages consumption of high sirtuin foods, which claims to produce similar effect as exercise and fasting.
Who doesn’t want to lose seven pounds in just seven days? At the very least, the fact that the Sirtfood diet requires a short period of just seven days to see results definitely warrant it a try. On top of shedding the extra weight, it surprisingly improves endurance whereby one may experience lasting energy throughout the day without feeling hungry and moody. This is totally unlike certain diets which induces lethargy due to the lack of certain nutrients and minerals in the meal plan.
Another interesting detail about this diet regime is that it allows you to freely consume your favourite foods, no hold barred. Although it may seem a bit tough in the beginning to have the green juices and only sirtfood-rich fares for three weeks to get the body into gear, it is certainly worth it. By the start of week two, there is basically no longer any caloric restriction. However, the founders of the diet does encourage that followers embrace the diet as a lifestyle for consistent results.
Another remarkable benefit of the Sirtfood diet claimed by the founders is that it does not cause muscle loss. According to a pilot study conducted by Goggins and Matten with students from their fitness center, the participants successfully lost seven pounds while maintaining their muscle mass and a few even gained muscle mass. This is certainly good news for bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts, who needs to rid off the bulk but retain muscle mass.
Who Can and Who Can't Undergo This Sirtfood Diet?
At this point of time, perhaps many of you might be quite eager to start on this diet immediately. Before you get your glass of wine and dark chocolate nibs, there is a caveat indicating that diabetics might not do well with the Sirtfood diet. While the diet does reduce your calorie intake in the beginning which helps to bring the glucose level down, sudden fluctuation of blood sugar levels may pose a threat to the body causing a dangerous ‘roller coaster’ effect. Sudden fluctuations of glucose levels may lead to dramatic symptoms such as weakness, dizziness, and confusion among others. On top of that, diabetics may find the diet counterproductive if you stock up on foods that are high in sirtuins but rich with sugars.
For those with dietary restrictions, do not despair as the Sirtfood diet can cater to meatatarians, pescetarians, vegetarians, and even vegans! There are numerous options that you can mix and match and see how it works out for you. Those who are lactose or gluten intolerant can still practise the diet with some guidance and even try the delicious recipes that are featured in the Sirtfood Diet Book.
