What is an Addiction?

Addiction is the continued and prolonged use of a mood-altering substance, behavior, person, or thing, with no regard to the adverse dependency consequences or a neurological impairment leading to said behavior. Any person can become addicted to anything very easily, but for any addiction to start is gradual and forms over a duration of time. Sometimes addiction or the beginning signs of addiction can be foreseen and noticed by other people.

*Classic traits of a person who is addicted to anything are:

  • Impaired control over substance/behavior
  • Preoccupation with substance/behavior
  • Continued use with no regard for consequences and denial

The result for the addicted person is immediate gratification, which is only a short-term feeling, matched with delayed effects, which is long term. When a person finally overcomes any addiction or dependency, there is always a withdrawal period that may involve cravings, irritability, and sometimes cold sweats with tremors. The cycle for all addictions, which all starts within the mind, is demonstrated below. Addiction is considered a disease, but one with a cure.

An addiction can be too many different things and is easy to obtain. Whatever makes a person feel good at that particular time becomes addicting to a person because they want that good feeling to last or to always have that good feeling again. These feelings of good can come from certain things or certain people and include an adrenaline rush, short-term contentment or happiness, and fulfillment for that moment in time. Those feelings can become addicting and a person may even obsess about it. Understanding a person's feelings is a way of understanding their addiction, how to solve it, and even why and how it all started.

  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Video Games
  • Internet
  • Sex
  • Food
  • Gambling

Many people may have a problem with addiction and may not even realize it. Basically, an addiction is something that becomes used to the extreme and a "must-have" for a person. These addictions can start from a variety of reasons, or maybe just one. Anything done or used more than what is considered "normal" is an addiction. People who are addicted to certain things have different reasons why this happens.

  • Genetics
  • Past History
  • Environment
  • Habits and Routines
  • Mental Health - A person with a mood disorder is at a much higher risk of obtaining a substance abuse addiction. People that are much more impulsive than others are also at a higher risk of developing addictive behaviors as well.

Many different parts of a person are affected by addiction, including their lives, emotions, and also the chemicals inside of the brain. Addiction is generally anything that makes a person feel good on the inside but is also hurtful to that particular person and the loved ones around that person who is addicted. Anyone can become addicted to anything, very easily.

How to Avoid Becoming Addicted to Things

Since addiction is a gradual process that happens over a period of time, there are ways to prevent addiction to anything from forming. And since addiction can be to anything, there are also ways to maintain a healthy limit for everything. Addiction starts within the mind, so if the mind is stronger than the body then addiction is not even an issue. There are many other traits a person must possess to keep their lifestyle addiction-free, but a person must also have the self-willpower to also want to be addiction free. No one else can change another person, except themselves.

Some great ways to avoid addiction are mentioned below. Mixing the want and the willpower a person has along with the methods mentioned below will ensure a healthy way of living with healthy limits and boundaries. This will also encourage other people in your presence to also want to improve their own way of living.

1. Self Discipline.

An addiction begins when people begin to lose certain personality standards or maybe were never taught them to begin with. Self-discipline is a personality trait that holds to a high standard for a person maintaining themselves, their lives, and their actions. A person can train themselves to control their conduct, and usually for personal improvement which includes avoiding any addictions. When a person trains themselves to become well behaved, other strong personality traits will also follow, like good decision making. A person must know self-discipline to avoid becoming addicted to anything or anyone, but also to survive in this world. Having self-discipline also involves having self-control and self-motivation.

2. Utilize Everything in Moderation.

This seems to be the golden rule and the most common rule for everyone pertaining to the world. Applying moderation to everything and every one is designed to keep boundaries and limits at a respectable amount, without favor. Setting reasonable and moderate margins for daily life to eliminate or lessen extremes is a great way to avoid becoming addicted to anything. This will create and mild and calm atmosphere within any one's life, with some normality and stability.

3. Change Routines and Schedules Peiordically.

This means not always doing and having the same thing for prolonged moments of time, which can increase the chances of addiction to start. For example, using the internet for prolonged periods of time daily may start an internet addiction very quickly through the use of social media accounts and apps. Changing routine and schedule, combined with previous methods mentioned above, will only decrease the chances of addictions from forming by eliminating the excessive use and by mixing things up.

4. Avoid Anything that is Generally Addictive.

This usually includes drug and alcohol abuse. When this type of addiction is apparent in any person's genetics, the risk is automatically increased by a high percentage. Things that are genetically addictive have started in past generations and will continue to be passed on to future generations unless avoided completely. Sometimes even when moderation is used, genetic addictions are harder to overcome.

5. Always Beware of Negative People.

These negative types of people are a negative influence that will only encourage and pressure other people to develop negative habits and a negative lifestyle, which can lead to addictions to certain things. For example: if a person has a best friend who likes to drink often with no limits, the chances of acquiring alcoholism are increased. This type of person is not healthy for another person wanting to avoid becoming addicted to things because they are enabling negative behavior along with encouraging it even further.

Thankfully I am not addicted to anything. But I am addicted to my family and always want to spend more and more time with them.

Anyway, that's a nice and well written hub and would help many to think of leaving their addictions. Most strange and interesting addiction is tanning.
