How Will You Burn Calories Today?

Linda (Kaywood) Bilyeu is a self-published author. Her books are available on Amazon. She writes from the heart—there is no other way.

Feel the burn and burn calories

Something most of us prefer not to think about is burning calories, but we should. This process doesn't have to be torture. It can be fun.

Consider it an adventure to discover new and challenging ways to find a way to fit the flab. We all have excuses.

I'm too busy, too tired, still have to finish off that bowl of ice cream...the list is endless.

I'm always seeking out unique ways to burn calories. Whether by gardening, playing with my grandkids or just by using the stairs instead of the elevator. I always feel like I accomplished something good for my heart after a successful calorie burn.

Once you get into a routine and notice a difference in the way your clothes fit that routine will become a way of life. Challenge yourself to burn as many calories in a day as you possibly can. Don't just sit have to move it to lose it.

Tippy Toe Stretch

Lunge your legs

Lunge your legs

Stairs are the way to go!

Stairs are the way to go!

Push Up without getting down

Brush and stretch

You burn calories by simply brushing your teeth. Really you do!

Not that many, so how about stretching and tightening your legs while maintaining your pearly whites?

Slowly raise onto your tippy toes and slowly lower your feet to a standing position....repeat the process.

Go ahead and try it.

Coffee and a lunge

While waiting for your coffee to finish perking how about doing some lunges?

Lunges are beneficial for the core area and the legs.

Besides the calorie burn (not coffee burn) you will also develop your leg muscles.

Scroll to Continue

Start with five lunges per leg and build up to as many as you desire.

Stairs vs Elevator

If you have stairs walk up and down the stairs for a burn. Elevators are the easy way.

We all need a good challenge and sometimes easy isn't always a good thing.

I avoid the elevator whenever possible and always look for the stairs.

Challenge yourself and take two stairs at a time. Stand straight, look forward and march on.

Push Ups

My favorite toning exercise is push ups. Push ups condition the entire body!

Anytime you pass a countertop in your home just drop and give yourself 20.

Yep, there is no need to get down on the ground anymore as long as your body is in the correct position these push ups serve their purpose.

Feel free to perform this act in public, but you might receive a few quizzical glances from passerbys. This routine can become addictive.

We never forget how to ride a bike ...

Instead of driving how about dusting off your bicycle and taking it out for a spin?

With the money you save on gas you can purchase stylish accessories for your new wheels.

That cute little bell to warn pedestricians you are approaching or a neat license plate that says "I'm in for burning calories."

Don't slouch!

Correct your posture. Sit straight. Yes, you! Stop slouching!

By sitting straight and tightening your core muscles you are burning calories and strengthening your abs.

Instead of drinking a six-pack consider showing yours off one day. Soon.

The Car Wash

It's so easy to just drive over to the local car wash or gas station to wash your vehicle. How about just cleaning your car yourself?

All you need is a bucket, hose, cloth for drying, sponge and some soap. Think about the fun you could have!

Wear your swimwear (if you are daring enough), blast some summer tunes and dance away as you scrub away the dirt that has accumulated. The calorie burn will surely be beneficial.

Mow the lawn

Let's not forget about lawn care. Someone has to tend to the yard. We could hire a maintenance company to come and do the job, but who gets the calorie burn? No one.

Most likely they are sitting on mowers. This is where the pushmower comes in. Not only are you burning calories and getting a decent cardio workout, but you could also work on your tan.

These are reasons I enjoy mowing the yard plus the power of the mower .... vrrroom!!!

The above are just some suggestions. There are many, many more. Just use your imagination and enjoy the new you!

Dance like this baby and you WILL burn MANY calories!

A FUN music video to help burn calories! Challenge yourself to get moves like Jagger :)

How did you burn calories today?

Marie Hurt from New Orleans, LA on June 08, 2013:

Greater that this older hub has popped up. I am trying to get fit. It is hard to burn enough calories to lose weight, but I am sticking to it. It is good for heart health to stay active.

Nell Rose from England on June 08, 2013:

This is so apt for me, I am dieting and exercising! yes, me, the one who has no problem losing weight normally, has in fact put on a out 12 pounds! Arggghhh! lol! I can't fit into my trousers, my stomach is so big I can carry a cup around on it, and I look like a blob! I actually do do the things you mentioned above, the counter pushups, the steps on the toes etc, but I am getting out the weights and going for it now! great hub, and ideas, nell

Sinea Pies from Northeastern United States on June 08, 2013:

Fun hub with great ideas, too. We don't think about what we're doing--or not doing. A few leg lifts at the microwave add up over time.

Voted up and useful!

Mary Craig from New York on June 08, 2013:

I love it when one of your old hubs pops up and I get the treat of reading it for the first time. Of course this hub is evergreen, unless of course you live in the north in which case, shoveling snow burns calories too ;)

Voted up, useful, and interesting.

Mary Hyatt from Florida on June 08, 2013:

Just came for reread to remind myself to burn some calories today! My bedroom and office is upstairs, so I'm up and down many times a day!

Dianna Mendez on June 07, 2013:

I will have to start exercising while brushing my teeth. Love the suggestions. The baby video is cute.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 26, 2013:

Terrye, Jools, Richard, LL, Mary ... Thanks for sharing the "unique" ways that you burn calories! :)

L.L. Woodard from Oklahoma City on October 04, 2012:

My little routine to keep the couch potato in me at bay is to walk in place during commercials when watching T.V. Since there are sooooo many commercials now, it's a fair workout.

Great hub; voted up and Shared.

Rich from Kentucky on October 04, 2012:

Let's see... reaching for the potato chips will burn so many calories... walking to the fridge for a sandwich will burn so many calories... constantly typing comments will burn so many calories... walking from the truck into the Dollar Store to buy snacks will burn calories.... gee, Linda, you're making this easy! lol We do all need to get exercise. Was much easier before heart problems set in. Still, gotta keep moving. Great ideas!

Mary Hyatt from Florida on October 04, 2012:

Funny I should read this Hub today, cause that's just what I'm doing today: burning calories by cleaning my dirty house and doing laundry long overdue.

I voted this UP, and will share.

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on October 04, 2012:

I burnt calories on a 5 mile walk this morning; I do that every morning. Then I did housework for about two hours but I have been a bit of a couch potato this afternoon to be honest. This hub was very interesting!

Terrye Toombs from Somewhere between Heaven and Hell without a road map. on September 23, 2012:

How many calories do we burn while reading? :) Great ideas. I'll burn calories by thinking about it and maybe writing a hub. Voted up and more. :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 09, 2012:

Hi Eddy, Audrey and Kelley! I hope you are still having fun burning calories. This hub keeps me motivated :)

Jainismus, I would suggest you eat more junk food and sweets, but that's not healthy. Burning calories is good for your heart so no matter if one is thin or thick always find a way to keep your ticker healthy.

Thank you for your comments.

Mahaveer Sanglikar from Pune, India on August 09, 2012:

Great Hub, it will surely help those who want to burn calories. In my case I am already slim, and actually want to become slightly fat. Is there any suggestion from you?

I voted up this hub and shared with my followers.

Audrey Hunt from Pahrump NV on June 30, 2012:

I love walking for burning calories - but not in 109 heat like today!

This hub is so good sunshine. But then everything you write is fantastic! And so are you!

kelleyward on June 29, 2012:

A great hub ;I am supposed to be on a diet;for the first time ever but I'm not doing very well at all.

This may give me the push that I need;so thanks for sharing.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on April 12, 2012:

Hi Julie, Tina and Sannel ... always remember any little bit counts! The countertops work great for the upper body and fingers across the keyboard are great for the fingers! Haha!:)

SanneL from Sweden on April 12, 2012:

Excellent advice Linda! Lately, the only exercise I get, are when my fingers run over the keyboard on my laptop lol!

Christina Lornemark from Sweden on April 12, 2012:

I really need to improve my activity since I have been to lazy during the winter! I like the push ups against the countertops and will try them! You have chosen very good pictures Linda:))

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on April 12, 2012:

I walk to work every day (20 minutes) and home every night and during the holidays I walk along the coast for an hour each morning, other than that, I'm pretty idle! I need to be using my countertops more and using some of your suggestions!

I walk with my neighbor three times per week. Used to run 2 miles per day...what happened there!? A good motivation is to sign up for a 5K walk/run. My kids and I did one together and it was fun. I will have to get back into the swing of things. I feel sooo much better when I am active. Thanks for the push and great ideas, sunshine:)

SJmorningsun25 on September 09, 2011:

Nice Hub! Great ideas. The cartoon at the top reminded me of a bumper sticker/magnet/something I saw in a souvenir shop once that said, "Inside there's a thin person fighting to get out, but I can usually shut her up with chocolate." :-) Voting up!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 25, 2011:

Hi Susan! Thank you! Welcome to my hubpages. Looking forward to following you :)

Rika Susan from South Africa on August 25, 2011:

Must be all that playing with your granddaughter that gives you such a sparkle, Sunshine! Can't believe you have a granddaughter! Looks like the recipe in this hub is worth following, if that is the result.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 25, 2011:

Hi Sharyn! Oh yes the power of the mower ... so much fun :) Great calorie burn!

Sharon Smith from Northeast Ohio USA on August 24, 2011:

Hi Sunshine,

I am happy to say that I do mow the lawn (at dusk) about once a week lately. Thanks goodness or I would not be able to say I did anything on your list :) Great advice!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 22, 2011:

EXCELLENT idea Deborah! I do that often and it REALLY works. Thank you for adding that calorie-burning, toning & strengthening idea! :)

Deborah Neyens from Iowa on August 22, 2011:

Great ideas. Gardening is a good way to burn calories and tone up, too. Don't think of it as weeding, think of it as doing squats while burning 280 calories an hour!

Liz Elias from Oakley, CA on August 20, 2011:

Some great ideas, but being senior citizens with some physical problems, not all of these are possible for us.

I have a bum knee, and cannot 'lunge,' hubby is a heart patient and has debilitating back problems. He cannot run a push mower--besides, we have nearly 3/4 of an acre! A bit too much for our age & condition--even the riding mower bothers his back. The bicycles will probably end up on Craigslist.

Washing the car? We always do it ourselves--no budget for hiring it out; besides, our little car has custom paint graphics--you do NOT put that through an automatic car wash! Hand-touch only!

The one thing I can do, with as much time as I spend here at the computer, is try to remember to sit up straight. I am very guilty of slouching! Thanks for that reminder!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 20, 2011:

@GNelson ... I just burned some calories laughing at your comment! Thank you :)

@Mich S GOOD LUCK with your kindergarten class! Go get 'em teach!

@Made I tried Zumba. I failed. Have fun :)

Madeleine Salin from Finland on August 20, 2011:

Great hub as usual! I haven't done much lately. It seems like my clothes have been shrinking this summer. I'm loooking forward to a zumba class that starts in a couple of weeks. Zumba is a fun way to work out!

Mich S on August 20, 2011:

I got my calorie burn this week by cleaning out my dirty classroom. But these are all great ideas to burn some calories! Dancing is my favorite!

GNelson from Florida on August 20, 2011:

I am going for a few dog pulls today. Most people call them walks but with my dog it is a pull. He pulls and I follow.

slabire on August 17, 2011:

Great ideas!

Usually I'm not eat to much calories because I'm using Herbalife products from , but those ideas are very useful for a lot of people which want to control their calories.

Have a nice day!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 17, 2011:

Calf raises and dancing while brushing your teeth...GREAT ideas LCRblogger and Fullerman!!! Maybe we can get Nebraska motivated! :) Thank you for sharing!

Ryan from Louisiana, USA on August 17, 2011:

I totally move around and dance when i brush my teeth. No lie. I try to move around more at work too. Great advice and interesting ideas to burn those calories. voted up and interesting.

LRCBlogger on August 17, 2011:

great ideas. I work from home several days a week. I try to ride my bike to the store when I can. I also walk around doing 'calf raises' after I've been sitting a lot. It looks a bit silly but is great for you.

Nebraska on August 17, 2011:

Thank you for the tips & motivation!!! Now I need a nap...J/K J/K! I was on an exercise kick for over 1 1/2 years and it became habit...I just need to find that again!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 17, 2011:

Fantastic! I'm glad my ideas are getting you motivated! Push-ups and lunges so far for me this morning! :)

Have fun y'all!

Movie Master from United Kingdom on August 17, 2011:

Your hub must be motivational, because I have just finished reading and said to my husband, I'll get my bike out and go for a ride, so I'm fired up and ready to go!

Excellent advice, brilliant hub many thanks and voting up, phew!

Brianna W from East Coast on August 16, 2011:

Nice hub! It was some great motivation and good key ideas. You're right, even the small things like taking the stairs instead can add up!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 16, 2011:

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 16, 2011:

@victoria 5 minutes a day is a great way to start! If I don't get 30 minutes a day, I notice mood and energy aren't to my liking so I just do it !

@Way to go Mentalist! Keep up the good work!

@cogerson....the pool always comes in handy. We get to use ours a lot longer.

Thank you for stopping by!!

UltimateMovieRankings from Virginia on August 16, 2011:

I love when it is hot it makes exercising outside much more fun...especially if you have a pool to jump into when you are done....sadly we are almost done with the summer and the pools are about to be shut down sad. Thanks for sharing all this great well as the Cameron Diaz car washing photo. Voted up and useful.

Mentalist acer from A Voice in your Mind! on August 16, 2011:

I've always been big and active.I eat little and do the house work and trim the yard.

Victoria Lynn from Arkansas, USA on August 16, 2011:

Nice! Voted up and interesting. I did cancel my membership to the gym this summer because I had so much mowing, trimming, and other yard work to do. Then we got 100 degree weather for a month, so there went that idea! I hate to exercise, so finding other ways is good. Lunges are very toning, I've found, but I don't do them either, anymore. How do I get into exercise? Maybe tell myself: Just five minutes a day????? Thanks, Sunshine. I like your hubs.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 16, 2011:

Wow earned a meal at the cafe! Enjoy! Keep up the good work!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on August 16, 2011:

Very good manthy!!! Enjoy your bike rides!

Motivation is key marellen. Right now I'm off to the playground to swing and slide with my granddaughter. I'm ready but waiting on Faith to get motivated! haha!

szts77 from Spain on August 16, 2011:

I'm going for a walk at 5AM tomorrow morning, and maybe for a jog, and then I'm going to go for a swim at the beach and go home. Though I still can't make up my mind whether to drop by at a cafe and have my breakfast there or to just eat at home... :)

Great hub!

marellen on August 16, 2011:

I can't argue with anything of your advice..all right ones. I just need to get motivated...

Mark from Alabama,USA on August 16, 2011:
