How To Build A Homemade Squat Rack And Pull Up Bar
In this article I am going to show you how to build a homemade pull up bar and squat rack for your home gym. In total this cost me around $130 New Zealand dollars which is around $100 USD. First I will go over everything you need to make this piece of equipment. You will need 2 pieces of 4 x 4 wood. When purchasing your wood you need to decide on a height that is ideal for you. You can find the right size by using a pull up bar at the gym or park and measuring the height of it. You also need to add around 0.6 meters (1.9 Ft) to the length of the post because we are going to concrete the posts into the ground.You also want to get 4 pieces of 2 x 4 wood as we will be using them to build the squat rack. Don't forget to also add 0.6 meters to the length as we will also be concreting them into the ground. When measuring the length of these pieces of wood try out a squat rack at your local gym and take a measurement of the position that suits you best. Also 2 of the 2 x 4 pieces of wood will need to be a couple of inches longer as this holds the bar in place. You will also need 3 bags of quick setting cement and a bar for the pull up bar. I used a bar that I had from an old power rack but if you do not have a bar you should be able to get one at your local hardware store. The tools that you will need are a hammer , a drill , a spade , some nails long enough to go through the pieces of 2 x 4 into the other pieces of wood , a tape measure and a saw.
The first thing we are going to do is drill our holes in the 4 x 4 for our pull up bar. The drill piece that you use should be the same size as your pull up bar so it is not loose. I drilled through about 75% of the way so that the the pull up bar will just sit within the posts. You also want to mark down around 6 centimeters or a few inches on both posts.
Also don't forget to mark the center of each post when you mark the spot to drill your holes.
The next step is to measure and cut your pieces of 2 x 4 to size. The first piece of 2 x 4 that we are going to attach to our 4 x 4 piece should be measured and cut to the right size that you want your squat rack to be. That 2nd piece of 2 x 4 should be slightly longer as this will hold the bar in place. It doesn't need to be too much longer around an inch should be good.
The next step is to attach our pieces of 2 x 4 to our pieces of 4 x 4. Remember to have your pull up bar holes on the sides of the post. First you want to put the smallest piece of 2 x 4 on the 4 x 4 post. Line up the post so that both the bottom and the side parts of the post line up. Now get your long nail and nail the two pieces of wood together. You want to add a few nails about 30cm apart.
The next step is to attach the longer piece of 2 x 4 to the first piece that you previously attached to the 4 x 4 piece of wood. You will do this by nailing it to the first piece to you have already attached.
Now you want to place the pull up bar in the holes that we drilled earlier for the pull up bar. Once you have done this you want to push both posts together as hard as you can so that the bar is all the way in. You may need to get some one to help you by holding the other side so that it doesn't move when you push it. It should look something like the picture below. I also have the barbell sitting on the squat rack part so you can see how it works.
The next step is to dig your holes. Make sure you measure the distance between each post before digging the holes. The holes should be the same distance apart. When digging your post holes you want to make the holes fairly wide so that there is enough concrete around the posts to hold them in place. Also you want to make your post holes at least 0.6 meters deep or 1.9 Ft.
Now you want to stand up your pull up bar and squat rack in the two holes that we just dug. You may need to get someone to help you do this. Once you have stood the pull up bar in the hole make sure that it is level. If not you may need to remove some more dirt from one hole or add dirt to another. You can also add some stones to the bottom of your holes as this can help to stop the posts from rotting in the future.
Now you are almost done. All that you have to do now is add the cement to your post holes. Simply follow the instructions on the cement package. Also don't forget to get someone to hold it in place while you add the cement. You will only need to hold it for 15 minutes or so because it is quick setting concrete however you should not use your pull up bar or squat rack for the next 48 hours. This will save me a lot of money for the back garden. Has the condition of the bar itself used deteriorated over time? Have you factored a way to remove the bar in case you need to replace it over time?
