For those who are wondering what is Restless leg syndrome (RLS)? It is a disorder that doesn't discriminate it affects all ages; even young babies can end up developing it.

The study shows approximately ten percent of the US citizens’ experiences restless night from restless leg syndrome (RLS). If you suffer from Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) mostly in the night, this means it is overwhelming to move your legs once you lay down.

After lying down to sleep, just as the body tries to get comfortable, leg sensations begin to react. You start to feel a crawling, tingling, or itching in the legs, and as you toss and turn, it only gets worse.

If you try to ignore the crawling, tingling or itching the urge to move is too much. If you are unsure whether or not you suffer from restless legs syndrome (RLS) here are some signs and symptoms you might have it:

My Biggest Struggle with Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) are not easy to diagnose especially since the symptoms are less noticeable during the day or while in the doctor's office. A substantial number of people suffer from this disease and it no way to prevent it.

However, to limit the possibility of developing Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) it best to avoid cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and eliminate caffeine.

I am a very active person. Therefore, I move around a lot on a daily basis, and my legs feel fine during the day. However, at night when I lie down to relax and sleep, in the middle of the night a tightening sensation overtakes both my legs.

Also, as soon as I sit to get settled down and be inactive by sitting in a chair, the sensations of crawling, tingling, or itching would start. After several weeks of going through these pains and complaining to my doctor, I was finally diagnosed with Restless Legs Syndrome.


Shortly after being diagnosed with restless leg syndrome (RLS) I woke up one morning with my body feeling numb and aching all over, and it was hard for me to move.

I didn’t know what was going on or how to react to the pains that took over my body. I was rushed to the emergency room where I waited for hours just to be told that I had really low magnesium levels.

I assume the doctor knew what was going on with me, but it felt like so much more was going on with my body. However from that visit, I was put on magnesium supplements and I was so grateful for it because it really helped, although it takes an hour or two before my legs finally settle down once I arrived home.

To deal with body aches and limit body movement, I learned a few tips and natural treatments to relax from restless legs syndrome


Tips for Natural Treatment and Relieving RLS symptoms

• Get regular exercise such as stretching, walking and jogging for an hour before bedtime that will help stimulate the legs and improve circulation

• Take a cold shower

• Soak in a hot tub of water

• Massage the legs

• Take an over-the-counter pain reliever

• Do leg stretches and exercises

• Apply hot or cold packs to the legs that will help the legs to relax

• Limit or switch to no caffeine, alcohol and tobacco use.

Lastly, to overcome the symptoms in the night, try to lie down on your left or right side, you choose which side is best for you and placing a pillow in between the thighs of both legs. This will help in reducing the pressure on your legs, thus enabling better circulation for the legs and giving you a peaceful sleep.


How to promote peaceful sleep while living with Restless legs syndrome (RLS)

There are two ways people dealing with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) can find relief at night after lying down to sleep.

  • One they can use a natural self-care method.
  • Two they can just make simple changes to their daily routines.

Using both methods is a win-win combination.

• Exercise three times a week for at least thirty minutes

• Terminate your alcohol use

• Change your diet, eat more food with iron

• Limit the sweet snacks

• Reduce caffeinated drinks

• Take hot baths

• Stretching and massage your legs

• Try to avoid sitting for a long period of time

• Take iron supplements to make sure get the required iron intake

RLS is a nightmare. I get it every so often and it feels like- this is really weird- it feels like my lower legs are awake but the rest of my body is ready to sleep. It's like my legs drank about 4 cups of coffee. It's kind of terrifying actually, and so uncomfortable!
