Hobbies That Promote Weight Loss

I am a 28 year old property manager in Little Rock, Arkansas. I am currently on a journey to be the healthiest version of myself!


The Huffington Post reports that nearly 49% of Americans would like to lose weight. Currently, a little over 50 million Americans have a gym membership but just 18% say that they actually go. That's a very small percentage. If you are someone (like me) who finds the gym boring but still would like to lose weight, here are some hobbies to try that will help you to reach your fitness goals!

Aerial silks is a type of performance in which one or more people perform aerial acrobatics while hanging from a special fabric. Usually it was just performers at the circus that knew how to do it but it is becoming increasingly popular across the United States. Aerial silks is a total body workout. Not only does it help you lose weight but it will tone your body up. If you are unsure of where to take a class for silks, try searching local circus arts classes.



Running is a hobby that costs next to nothing. You just need a good attitude, some running shoes and a place to run. You could run on a track, on your street, in the gym, on a trail and many other places. You can run in the winter or summer, rain or shine. If you would like an idea of how many calories you would burn per mile, try multiplying your weight by 0.53. For example, if you way 210lbs you would burn approximately 111 calories per mile. If you weight 140lbs, you would burn approximately 74 calories. While it may seem hard to get started, once you do, you won't regret it! Ask any runner that you know. It becomes a very important part of their life.

If you would like some inspiration to run, you should read Do Life: The Creator of My 120lb Journey. This book was written by my friend Ben Davis. When he was just 22 years old, he weighed about 360lbs. He decided he had to make a life change. So he began to run. At first it was hard and then gradually it became a hobby that he loved. Ben lost over 120lbs. A fun fact about Ben is that after he wrote this book, he then walked by himself from Los Angeles to Boston! Over 3,000 miles on foot. So if a man who started out at 360lbs who then became a runner and eventually walks across the United States doesn't inspire you to run, I don't know what will!

Chances are you know someone who does CrossFit. If you do, you know that it's not just an exercise or hobby, it is a way of life! CrossFit has become incredibly popular over the past couple of years. CrossFit is defined as a fitness program that uses strength and endurance training for short, high-intensity workouts. An example of CrossFit is the program at a gym that uses running, rowing machines, medicine balls, and kettle bells in its workouts. You can burn over 500 calories in just one 30 minute session! If you are serious about your weight loss journey, you cannot go wrong with this hobby. Not only will you lose weight but you will build muscle and have better endurance! It's also a great way to make friends. Almost every CrossFit gym considers their goers to be like family. You all become very close as you achieve goals together.



Cooking may not seem like a good hobby for weight loss but you would be wrong! As a rule of thumb, weight loss is generally a result of 75 percent of your diet and just 25 percent exercise. So really, what you eat plays a more important role than exercise. Some ways to use cooking for your benefit would be :

  • Meal prepping healthy meals.
  • Trying a new diet such as Atkins, Ketogenic and weight watchers.
  • Experiment with different low carb or law calorie recipes. Healthy food can be delicious. Just search online or through old cookbooks and find some great recipes. The best website to find healthy recipes in my opinion is Pinterest.

If you hate going to the gym but would still like to lose weight, you should try hiking. Hiking is a great cardio workout that is much less boring than running on an elliptical. If you would like to find some great hiking trails near you, download the free app called AllTrails or visit their website here. It's a great tool that lets you find the perfect trail specifically for your needs. It even has pictures and reviews of all the trails. This is also a great hobby if you are a dog owner. Your dog would love to go hiking with you.



While Yoga may not help you lose weight quite as fast as other hobbies, it has a lot of amazing benefits. Yoga will help you tone your body, become more flexible, relieve stress and it is great cardio. A study conducted by the Yoga Journal and Yoga Alliance found that as of 2016, over 80 million people in the United States are doing yoga. Yoga can be done at home, at the gym, outdoors, anywhere! You can even download free phone apps that teach you all the yoga positions. You'll be a pro in no time.



Biking is another great outdoor hobby. It is a great cardio workout, can increase muscle strength and flexibility, improve posture and relieve stress. The exact number of calories burned during a bike ride is hard to say because the speed, weight of the rider and incline can affect these results. On average though, a person who weighs 180lbs can burn over 600 calories in an hour! Biking would definitely help you on your weight loss journey.
