Herbal Remedies: Herb Punarnava for Diabetese and Kidney Disease

Radhika loves including herbs in her diet that have no side effects. They are good preventives too.

Herb Punarnava

Herb Punarnava

Herbs have gone a long way from ancient villages to present day metropolitan cities. India and China in Asia are the two rich sources of herbal medicinal plants that are being widely used. According to estimates, over one-fourth of the total people in the world rely upon traditional herbal remedies. The most striking fact about herbs is that they won’t cause any side effects as they are natural.

My parents have great belief in traditional herbal remedies. My mother used to try several herbal remedies for ailments like common cold, cough and skin allergies for us. They are not fast-healing medicines, but are highly effective when taken as preventives. Basil (Tulsi) and Indian lilac (Neem) are grown in almost all Indian homes that have high therapeutic values.

I had no idea that herbs can cure major health issues until I came across this incident. One of my close relatives was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and it was not possible for him to move on without dialysis. This was really shocking for all of us as he was a strong man free of any illness. Hardly had he suffered from even a mild cold and he was exorbitantly hard working. But apart from this, he was fond of sweets and used to eat a lot. This led him to be a diabetic gradually at the age of 70 years. He never cared about it and continued living like a healthy person. But when he hit 80, sugar level rose abnormally and affected kidney, the major health organ of our body.

Herb Punarnava as a renewer

Doing dialysis twice in a week was cumbersome for him as he had to travel about 35km. to the hospital. It took 6 to 7 hours for doing the whole process. Even after the dialysis, the urea and creatinine levels in the blood didn’t come down. The sugar level in blood was 150mg/dL as opposed to the normal 90 – 120 mg/dL. He was having a creatinine value 5.3mg/dL and urea value 173mg/dL.

I had to help him reciprocating for the several good deeds he has done for our family. But I had no idea of ‘how to’ as I haven’t done any medical studies. But some positive hope was instilling in my mind and I made some research. I got the exact information from the internet and came to know about the herb Punarnava. But it was not clear whether it would be effective for such an old-aged man with such high values of sugar, creatinine and urea.

Before proceeding for taking herbal treatment, I wanted to check whether it would not have any adverse effects as the body won’t be eliminating the waste because of renal disease. I took him to an Ayurvedic physician and was told that he could be cured as diabetes was the reason behind it. The doctor advised to prepare a Punarnava decoction to drink in the night before going to bed. It worked well and within a week, sugar level came down to 118 mg/dL. There was a tremendous decrease in creatinine and urea levels with 2.8 mg/dL and 75 mg/dL too. Dialysis got stopped and now he leads a healthy life following the strict diet and medicines prescribed by the physician.

Punarnava was called as a ‘renewer’ by ancient villagers as they had found it so powerful for renewing the life of an almost dead plant.

Making Punarnava decoction

You’ve to collect some roots of the herb Punarnava. Wash them thoroughly as the roots are covered with soil. Cut these roots into small pieces and weigh them to take 15 gm. Put them in a mortar and crush them fine using a pestle.

Boil 1 cup of milk with 4 cups of water in a thick bottomed vessel. Pour these crushed roots into it and stir well. Simmer and let it decoct until it reduces to 1 cup. The patient has to drink it in the night after food.

Collecting these Punarnava roots is not so easy. Capsules of this herb are also available that are manufactured by several companies. One of them is that from Himalaya. But drinking an aqueous solution is more effective than taking a capsule.

Herb Punarnava

In Sanskrit language, ‘Punar’ means regaining/restoring and ‘nava’ stands for new. Punarnava is a weed that grows in different regions of India. This herb is seen in Brazil too, where it is called as Erva tostao. The Latin name of Punarnava is Boerhavia diffusa and it belongs to Nyctaginaceae family. Commonly known as Hog or Pig Weed and Spreading Hog Weed, Punarnava is an important herb in Ayurveda that has varieties of medicinal properties.

Medicinal properties

The science of Ayurveda states that the properties of Punarnava are bitter, astringent, cooling and purifying. The roots of Punarnava are potent diuretic effective for urinary troubles. Ayurveda Acharyas indicate the properties of this plant as light (laghu), dry (Ruksha) and hot potent (ushna veerya). All parts of this plant are used in Ayurvedic herbal preparations.

Whatever has been remarked about this herb, all are true according to my experience. I hope this hub would help some of those that are in panic with diabetese and kidney disease.

Caution: Consult your physician before taking this herbal medicine, especially if you've a major health issue. Don't consider it as a substitute for any other medicine.

Check always before consuming any medicine for treating the illness. It would always be good to consult a physician for that. Wish you good luck and health. Thank you.

Dee on January 14, 2017:

Thank you for responding. I apologize for not being clearer. The article was on using the punarava roots for blood sugar/diabetics. I am trying to find out if the roots need to be fresh for it to work. I am in USA and they are very difficult to find. The product from Dr. wakde does not indicate if it is the whole plant or roots only.

Radhika Sreekanth (author) from Mumbai,India on January 12, 2017:

I can't say that it would work for the patient without knowing exactly what the syndrome is. I can say that Punarnava roots are good medicines for patients suffering from diabetes and kidney disease as per my experience. Consult your physician before trying alternative medicines for your safety. Also I've no idea on the bag of Dr. Wakde's organic Punarnava. Roots are available in Kerala. Thank you.

Thank you R.Mani for adding to the discussion. Your advice is valuable for those suffering from this disease.

Homeopathy has excellent medicines for Kidney failures. Before dialysis these medicines will bring the kidney to normal functioning. But after five or six dialysis these medicines are doubtful.Similarly Acupuncture will bring back the kidney to normal functioning very esily. Acupuncture with Homeo proved very useful and successful for CKD. I have seen several Patients who cured through these combined medicinal system.

Radhika Sreekanth (author) from Mumbai,India on May 04, 2013:

He was a vegetarian, but fond of sweets & nuts. He stopped eating them to a certain extent so that it may not harm him. Rice is the staple food of Kerala which we can't avoid at any condition. He started eating meals containing watery vegetables such as cucumber, bottle gourd etc. Idli, dosa, upma all he takes with limited salt content. The important fact behind his health is his hard-working nature. I've never seen him sitting idle with nothing to do. Today too, he does gardening in the backyard of his home. May god bless him and you!

Cedric on May 03, 2013:

Please what sort of diet he follow ?

Radhika Sreekanth (author) from Mumbai,India on May 02, 2013:

Hi Cedric, he took Punarnava decoction only. But, he followed strict diet in order to stay away from doing dialysis.

Cedric on May 02, 2013:

I am a patient on dialysis too since 8 years , did he use anything other than punarava that helped him get off dialysis, your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi radhsagrwl,

We used to extract the roots directly from those that grow in our nearby places. I don't know how much fresh it would be if you buy from outside. Anyway, I saw that Indiamart sells the roots online. Or else, Himalaya's Punarnava capsules are also good and they also work well.

radhsagrwl on March 03, 2013:

Do you know of any centre in kerala where i can find it? Or is there any other way to get the roots?
