Healthy Beverages for the Active Lifestyle

We all have heard it before. Healthy eating and exercise is the key to good health, but what is often overlooked is healthy drinking. One of the least popular and most important drinks is water. The human body and the brain is mostly water. Since many biological functions are dependant on water, it is reasonable to assume a few glasses a day will be helpful to your health and well being. If you don't care for the taste of water, there is a variety of options to add flavor to water. It is possible to have great taste and drink healthy too. Also, when you choose not to drink water, try to find a drink that is rich in vitamins, minerals and is low in sugar content. When you think of beverages such as soda, sports drinks and mochas, most people don't realize the fat content in these drinks. For example, a mocha could have over 480 calories in one drink. So it is in your best interest to switch to healthier drinks; by making the switch, you will reduce your calorie intake and start losing weight. The bottom line is, think about what you are drinking.

PepperMint Lemon Water

For those of you who don't care for plain water, there is a way to get all the benefits of water with a bit of flavor. You will need a pitcher of water, some peppermint and a lemon. Place the Peppermint in bottom of a pitcher, and slice lemon into semi thick slices. Use a long spoon to mash the lemon and peppermint in bottom of pitcher. When finished this will make a low fat sugar-free beverage, that is very healthy and refreshing. Please remember, thirst is often misinterpreted as hunger. If you want to hydrate your body and help control hunger, drinking water is the most effective way to do this.

  • - Information on cranberry health benefits
  • - Additional information on benefits of cranberry

Cranberry Juice

One of the best drinks is Cranberry Juice; this drink has been used for a number of years as a way to fight unitary track infections. Also, pure cranberry juice has high concentrations of antioxidants. When selecting cranberry juice, make sure you are purchasing pure cranberry juice not cranberry cocktail; Cranberry cocktail has a high sugar concentration that renders the anti-oxident properties less effective; so look for one that is hundred percent juice. It has been said pure cranberry juice is sour tasting; if this is a problem try mixing it with sparkling water.

It you are looking for a way to detoxify your body, try going on a  cranberry juice diet for two or three days. Basically, it would be a juice only diet for that period of time. This will help to detoxify your body, in addition to other previously mentioned health benefits.

  • - Benefits of Apple Juice on neurotransmitter in human brain.

Apple Juice

Apple Juice has vitamin C and A. In addition, apples are believed to be a good source of soluble fiber; soluble fiber is believed to help prevent cholesterol build up in blood vessels. Apple juice is a very effective cleanser making it necessary for the health of the human body. Also, drinking apple juice is believed to help flush out the kidneys and liver, and is believed to help with arthritis. Next time you hear the old saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away", there is a lot of truth to that statement.

To get the most benefits from apple juice, please read the label and choose only 100% apple juice. If you don't choose 100 percent juice, you will be drinking a lot of sugar; this could lead to weight gain and possible increase risk of diabetes.

Green Tea

Lastly,it has a compound known as theanine. This substance is believed to help stimulate alpha brain waves, and to calm the body.

Red Wine

Research has shown the health benefits of red wine are good; While white wines offer some heart healthy benefits, it doesn't have the same benefits as that of red wine when drunk in moderation.

A glass of red wine is heart healthy, and it lowers the risk of heart attack in middle aged population, and there is evidence that red wine taken in moderation raises HDL's(good cholesterol) and lowers LDL's(bad cholesterol). Studies have shown red wine is a good source of antioxidants. So go ahead have a glass of red wine; just remember moderation is the key to healthy drinking.

  • - Information on benefits of milk

The benefits of milk to the human body include healthy skin, strong immune system, prevention of illnesses such as hypertension, obesity and dental decay. In addition, the nutrients found in milk are necessary for prevention of chronic ailments.

Milk is one of the best sources of calcium, and it promotes strong bones and teeth. It is known for it vitamin content, and it is believed that regular consumption of low fat milk can help to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Other benefits included its ability to re hydrate the body because of its water content. Milk is an excellent drink for all ages; if you are lactose intolerant there is lactose free milk if you want fat reduced milk, there is  two percent, and skim milk.

  • - Benefits of Cocoa in diet
  • - Additional Cocoa benefits

Research has shown evidence that chocolate may be good for you; Scientists reported preliminary evidence that cocoa and other chocolates may keep high blood pressure down, your blood flowing, and your heart healthy.

However, many people like to eat the processed form of chocolate with all the non nutritious ingredients such as sugar, corn syrup and milk fats; usually in a candy bar, the actual cocoa content is less than 25 percent. To mix your own healthy reduced sugar beverage, try mixing pure cocoa with low fat milk. So go on enjoy your chocolate, just do it in moderation.

The best type of smoothie is a nutrient dense drink; a good smoothie needs to have a small amount of fat. Simply blending a few fruits with ice and milk doesn't cut it; there is almost no fat to help the body absorb nutrients a body needs. A healthy smoothie contains wheat germ, egg yolks, and other nutrient-dense foods.

What I really Like about smoothies is the versatility and variety of ingredients you can mix in with your various concoctions. You can select a variety of ingredients such as orange juice, carrot juice, tomato juice, flax seeds, wheat germ, or even cocoa powder. Just remember to go easy on the sugar going into your personal selections and Enjoy!!.

Coconut Water

Many travelers to the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and various Pacific Island have enjoyed a drink called coconut water. Coconut water is among the purest liquids on this planet. Coconut water is full of electrolytes and potassium; it has many nutrients that the body needs.

This drink has been used for years as a nutritious refreshing drink. It has the nutrition found in milk with out the cholesterol, and it has the nutritional benefits of orange juice with out the calories. In addition, it is full of vitamins, and it has only 5mg of natural sugars compared to 10 plus man made sugars found in many sports drinks.

If you are looking for a refreshing drink that is nutritious, helps to detoxifies the body, and is isotonic, this may be the way to go.

Carrot Juice

Carrot juice has many helpful benefits it is often called a miracle juice. Many people suffering from various ailments have found carrot juice improved their health. In addition, many people have found it to be good insurance for good health. This juice is not too sweet and not too sour, and it makes a good base to mix with other juices. If you are looking for a juice that is full of vitamins and antioxidants, and will protect and nourish your skin this is for you.

Cheers for acknowledging green tea in this list! A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition as recent as June of 2000 noted that green tea contains polyphenols, including epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which are powerful antioxidants that have been shown to lower cholesterol, decrease cancer risk and men who drink green tea have demonstrated a lower incidence of prostate cancer.

Plus, iced green tea is delicious! Have you tried XINGtea? They make green and black teas flavored naturally and sweetened with honey and pure cane sugar. Check it out at

If you dislike drinking plain water, try Syfo Naturally-Flavored Sparkling Waters. They have three or four flavors I think, I really like the tangerine-orange. They contain no sugars or artificial sweeteners and use water purified through reverse osmosis. It's really delicious and healthy. My wife drinks it all the time because she also doesn't like to drink plain water. You can learn more about Syfo at -- I think you may be able to order online.

@rawliving - You hit the nail on the head with your comment about alkalizing your drinking water; so much of the water in this country is acidic. I am not a research scientist, but I have heard aliments such as cancer can't live and thrive in an alkaline saturated body. I also heard alkalizing your food and drinks is one of the healthful things you can do for your body, and for the elimination of many types of illnesses. As additional information I have heard food and drinks such as Watermelon, Orange Juice, Potatoes, Mineral Water and Chocolate are all alkaline(In general most fruits and vegetables are). Lastly, thank you for your suggestion on the carrot, cucumber, apple and ginger sounds good I will have to try it; Thanks for taking time to comment on this hub :)
