Spectrum Organic Coconut Oil
Organic Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil has so many wonderful uses, it is impossible for me to list them all here. Some people are aware of all the benefits of this oil, others are not. If you don't already have some in your pantry or kitchen go buy it, everyone can benefit from this stuff including pets! For all the uses it has, I still can't believe how cheap it is at the store! Truly a miracle of nature.
I prefer Spectrum Organic Coconut oil. This can be easily found in the baking/oil isle at your local grocery store (I always find mine at a place called Giant Eagle). Typically a large jar of this brand runs around $8.00, and despite what people think, it does not taste like a coconut. My 2nd favorite brand is Jarro, also organic. I love coconut oil for a hair mask in the winter months. Just apply and brush through, wait 20 minutes and wash hair as usual. For best results, try this hair mask 3-4 times a week. I use it for dry skin, on my entire body and face. Nothing beats a hot bath and extreme moisturizing afterward with coconut oil. It makes an unbeatable aftershave too. I will eat 1-2 tbsp’s a day for the benefits to my cardiovascular system, for energy and weight loss and my pets will also eat a small amount, they also enjoy getting it rubbed into their coats 1x a month. I really can't say enough GOOD about using Organic Coconut Oil in your home and on your body.

Hi, Rebecca, my pleasure reading this article on coconut oil many uses. I eat the meat, drink the milk, and use the oil as my pomade. Thanks for sharing.

My cat does the same thing! He even begs for it. :) I use this stuff for everything. Also if you get a cold, you can eat 1 tsp a day, it's another one of natures antibiotics, so is Garlic and Oil of Oregano. Great makeup remover too. :)

Thanks for the advice on pets, Rebecca! I enjoy using coconut oil masks on my color treated long hair.
I just tried giving it to my cat and thought I would have to force feed it, but he likes it and licked the spoon clean! :)

I'm not entirely sure. I'd just start with a tablespoon and add as you go (see how much they absorb). It's non-toxic, but to much can make the coat greasy. Hope that helps.

I did leave a comment previously, however I was wondering if you could or know how much to rub on a dog's coat and how many times a week or day

Hi Jackie. I'd love the deodorant recipe!
As for eating it, you can cook with it, I sub it with any meal that normally calls for extra virgin olive oil. Or, you can mix a tablespoon or two in coffee, or just eat a tablespoon of it directly. It really doesn't have any flavor. I eat it raw, so do my cats :) Thanks for your comment.

I just started using this recently and I need to start eating it. How do you eat it? I make the best deodorant ever out of this and baking soda! Got the recipe from someone at hubpages or the idea for it anyway. It is great stuff and I like Spectrum best too. Oh and I put it on my kitties smushed with garlic to get rid of fleas til they are old enough to go to the vet.

Thanks for your great comment Rayne123, and for sharing this. Try your local grocery store. Do you have a Giant Eagle near you? Or Walmart, they have it cheapest, look near the cooking oil isle. :)
Rayne123 on October 14, 2013:
I have used it for many reasons listed and not listed. I have not had any in awhile though..have to get some more.
I love it. However I have not seen it in grocery stores around here only in health stores,, which is very expensive.
It also helps your hair to grow a tiny bit faster and healthier, but like anything you must be faithful to it.
Thank you for info

Hi, the kind I use is very solid. But warms quickly in your hands. It has no scent or taste. My cat will lick it off my fingers! He loves it. I think Coconut oil is one of natures little miracles. It's amazing. Thanks for your comment.
Vicki on February 27, 2013:
Good post. Read about this a few years ago. I use a cold pressed/unrefined, organic, virgin coconut oil and it is wonderful. Mine has a light, pleasurable scent/taste of coconut - love it soooo much! Is the kind you use more of a liquid? It looks like it in the jar. Just curious. What I use is a solid.

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on January 11, 2013:
Very nice and useful hub.
In India coconut is used in many ways, for cooking, as oil, as hair oil, in beauty products etc. Since India has a large coastal area, coconut is found in abundance and is commonly used. I fully agree with your views in the hub.
Thanks for this useful hub.
