Bitter Gourd also known as Bitter Melon / Balsam pear / Goya is a tropical fruit loaded with minerals and vitamins. As the name implies, this veggie is melon that is bitter. Due to its bitter taste, most of them hate to eat. But the valuable benefits makes it even worth eating.

The Plant do well in tropical and sub tropical regions including Asia, South America, Parts of Africa and Caribbean.

Regardless of what it is called and bitter the taste it is, something that is agreed upon is the fact that there are several benefits of eating bitter gourd in our day to day life.

Respiratory Disorders:

  • The Fresh pods of the bitter melon are an excellent remedy for curing asthma , cough , cold and other respiratory problems.
  • Take 2 ounces of bitter melon juice and mix with a cup of honey diluted in water. Drink daily which helps in improving asthma and other respiratory disorders like bronchitis and pharyngitis.
  • Bitter Gourd plant roots are used in folk medicine for respiratory disorders from ancient times.

Blood Disorders:

  • Bitter melon juice is highly beneficial in treating blood disorders like blood boils, scabies, itching, ringworm and other fungal diseases.
  • Mix 2 ounces of fresh bitter gourd juice in 1/4 cup of lime juice and stir well. Drink on empty stomach for 6 months daily or until you get the desired result.

Scientific Evidence

A number of clinical studies have been conducted to evaluate the efficiency of bitter gourd in the treatment of diabetes.

  • In January 2011, the results of a four-week clinical trial were published in the Journal of Ethno pharmacology, which showed that a 2,000 mg daily dose of bitter melon significantly reduced blood glucose levels among patients with type 2 diabetes, although the hypoglycaemic effect was less than a 1,000 mg/day dose of metformin.
  • Other older studies have also suggested an association between bitter melon intake and improved glycaemic control, while a report published in the March 2008 issue of Chemistry and Biology found that bitter melon increased cellular uptake of glucose and improved glucose tolerance.

Diabetes mellitus:

  • Type 2 diabetes is caused partially due to the inability of a cell to absorb the sugar in the blood due to insufficient insulin or due to development of resistance to insulin.
  • In addition to food ingredients, bitter melon plays a vital role to bring diabetes under control.
  • The bitter melon pod contains three active anti-diabetic properties including Charantin, has blood glucose lowering effect which is conformed through scientific research. Vicine and insulin like compound known as polypeptide-p. These substances either worked in group or individually to reduce blood sugar levels.
  • It is known fact that bitter melon also contains a lectin that reduces blood glucose concentrations by acting upon peripheral tissues. This lectin is thought to be a major factor behind the hypoglycaemic effect that develops after eating bitter melon.

Thank you so much for informing us about the benefits of bitter melon, Nivas. I didn't realize that it can also reduce respiratory and blood ailments, as well as Type 2 diabetes.

I hate the taste of bitter melon, but it's part of my diet as I am iron-deficient. Now, I am more aware of its other benefits.
