About Cardio Vascular Disease

Experts feel that Cardio Vascular Disease is mainly a lifestyle disease and more than 80% of deaths can be prevented by adopting a heart healthy lifestyle. The use of electro cardiogram machine, almost a hundred years ago and the use of drugs to dilate blood vessels almost fifty years ago have revolutionized the treatment of Cardio Vascular diseases. Today technology plays a major role in managing heart conditions. Self-monitoring EKG apps, fingerprint sensors to monitor arrhythmias, apple watches and have revolutionized the treatment of heart diseases. Advances in technology, drugs, and surgical interventions have made it easier to detect heart conditions early and treat effectively.

World Heart Day 2021

The theme of World Heart Day 2021 is ‘Use Heart to Connect’, by leveraging the power of digital means to improve awareness, manage and prevent diseases of the heart. According to World Heart Federation, there are 520 million people living with heart disease globally. Now due to the covid pandemic, these people are not able to access the medical treatment that they need. Added to this the lack of contact with family members, reduced physical activities, and missing doctor’s appointments have led to an increase in heart problems. An increase in cases has also been observed. Digital healthcare platforms have come to the rescue at this time. Remote consultations, telemedicine, have helped the patients connect with their health care professionals so that there is no break in their treatment and care.

Heart disease is a chronic medical condition that needs careful management. Once diagnosed with a heart condition, the patient needs holistic treatment including long term monitoring, lifestyle changes, and medication. Digitization has made it convenient and simpler both for the patients and doctors who treat them. Patients can get timely advice and help rather than depend on self-medication and risk their lives. Apps to help patients with online and offline appointments as well as for delivery of medicines have saved a lot of inconvenience to heart patients. Various health monitoring tools to measure heartbeat, blood sugar, cholesterol levels are now available due to the advancement in technology which are of great help to the patients. Many wearables to track steps, heart rate, calories, sleep cycles, also exist which can be effectively used for fitness and health.

When My Heart Spoke to Me

Hi, I am your heart speaking, please listen to me.

As you know, I am an incredibly hard-working organ of your body. I wanted to tell you not to worry too much about me, because the more stress you put yourself, the more I feel it. This unhealthy lifestyle that you have been living, be it work stress, sleepless nights, unhealthy eating habits and no workout is affecting me badly. This cannot go on for long. I go on for years without stopping and without breaking down, is it not fair that you look after me well so that I can continue to function to my highest level. So, I want you to listen to me and start making changes to the way you have been living, if you want me to be healthy and happy. A little effort from you can make a big difference for both of us. So, I have decided to advise you on this matter, hoping that you will follow my advice and make me, and in the process make yourself fit, well and happy.

As you know I am a vital organ of your body and my health is important for your overall wellbeing. Avoid the risk factors that can affect my health like a sedentary lifestyle, stress, smoking, and using tobacco. It is ideal to have an annual check-up. Five things that you must take care of, for a healthy me, that is your heart are physical activity, a healthy weight, a diet consisting of healthy fats and oils, keep blood pressure under control and laugh as much as possible as you know that laughter is the best medicine. I am like a pump supplying oxygen rich blood to various organs in your body. So you need exercise and follow right diet to keep me functioning normally and stay your lifelong friend.

Myths and Facts

Certain misconceptions about me can confuse you and cause more harm to your health. Here I would like to bust a few myths that people have about me the heart.

Myth No.1: Young people do not die of heart attacks.

Fact: Doctors state that young people in their 30’s and 40’s and those who do not belong to the risk category are succumbing to heart attacks in recent times. Doctors attribute the reasons for this being unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol due to higher consumption of trans fats, stress, lack of exercise, smoking and alcohol.

Myth No.2: Exercising more can make me, the heart stronger:

Fact: Intense exercising bouts puts more pressure on me the heart. Excessive exercise can also cause the heart muscles to dilate and become thinner affecting blood supply or even cause heart failure when I am unable to pump blood. Moderate exercise after advice from the doctor is what I need.

Myth No. 3- Heart attack and Cardiac arrest are the same:

Fact: No, they are entirely different. When any of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart are blocked, a heart attack occurs. When the heart muscle does not get vital blood supply and oxygen, it will begin to die. If not treated within the golden hour period, it could prove fatal. A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood to other parts of the bod y and normal breathing is affected. Immediate treatment through CPR (Cardio pulmonary Resuscitation) or defibrillator can improve the chances of survival.

Myth No.4: Teeth have no connection with the heart:

Fact: In fact, oral health has a lot to do with your heart health. Studies have shown that gum disease (periodontitis) is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. The bacterial infection can spread to the blood stream and affect the heart valves.

Look Out for These Signs, it May be a Heart Attack

  • Shortness of breath
  • Discomfort in arms, back, neck, shoulder or jaw
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Severe weakness
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Heartburn like feeling
  • Cold sweat

Steps to Protect the Heart

Simple changes in lifestyle and diet can help avoid cardiac ailments and lead a healthy life. So here are some easy steps to protect Heart Health:

  • At least 30 minutes of daily walk.
  • Avoid sitting for more than 10 hours at a desk.
  • Take regular breaks when required to sit for prolonged periods.
  • Avoid stress and negative thoughts. Laugh as much as possible.
  • Stay calm and positive and laugh as much as possible.
  • Practice deep breathing, yoga and meditation to maintain balance.
  • Communication with friends and relatives help relieve stress.
  • Take the medicines regularly as advised by your doctor.
  • Maintain an ideal body weight by regularly checking your weight.
  • Excess fat around the abdomen or waist are directly related to heart disease.
  • Exercise regularly, avoid using lifts, and climb stairs, walk as much as possible.
  • Spend as much time in natural surroundings to rejuvenate.
  • Replace saturated fats and sugar with fresh fruits and vegetable.
  • Organic plant-based diet reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Optimize gut microbiome with a proper diet. Avoid processed and junk food.
  • Quit smoking and tobacco and minimize alcohol.
  • Doing something meaningful every day makes life interesting.
  • Having an optimistic attitude is good for the heart.
  • High blood pressure and high cholesterol are the major risk factors, so keep them in check.
  • Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water and reduce the intake of salt.
