A Complete Guide to Stopping Hair Loss

Here is my story of how I stopped my hair from falling out.

Here is my story of how I stopped my hair from falling out.

Don't Feel Afraid

Hair loss is scary, embarrassing, and hard to fix. As a 20-year-old who has already suffered from severe hair loss, I know the anxiety and shame it can bring. Over the last year, I have tried many different things to stop my hair from thinning, and finally, after months of searching, researching, and visiting doctors (Chinese and Western), I have found solutions and, encouragingly, I have seen new growth.

Experiencing hair loss? Here's my story and how I prevented it.

Experiencing hair loss? Here's my story and how I prevented it.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair is one of those inessential parts of the body, meaning that if your body is under stress or pressure, it will focus on keeping you alive and healthy rather than maintaining a full head of hair! There are many factors that can contribute to hair loss.

Common Hair Loss Risk Factors

  • Vitamin D deficiency: Because most people spend their time indoors, behind a desk, or on the couch, a surprisingly high percentage of the population has insufficient levels of vitamin D (which is synthesized in the skin through exposure to UV rays). Studies have shown that low vitamin D levels cause hair loss.
  • Too much vitamin D: High levels of vitamin D can also cause hair loss, which is why it is important to have the right balance.
  • Iron deficiency: Iron is important for your hair, nails, and skin. Too little can cause hair to fall out or make the hair follicles smaller so your hair strands end up being thinner.
  • Calcium deficiency: Calcium is also important for your hair, and if you are not getting enough vitamin D (which is needed for absorbing calcium), your hair may fall out.
  • Stress: Stress causes hair loss. This is widely known, and seeing your hair fall out can just add to that stress! It takes between one and four months after a stressful incident for the hair to start falling out.
  • Lack of sleep: If you are not sleeping well, this can also have a negative effect on your hair.
  • The type of shampoo you use: Shampoo may also be making your hair fall out. Natural shampoos are much better for your hair and scalp than chemically-based ones.
  • Food allergies: Various food allergies, especially to dairy, can cause your hair to fall out.
  • Coeliac (or Celiac, as it is known in the US) disease: It is not widely known that hair loss is a symptom of Coeliac, which is when the small intestine cannot break down gluten, an ingredient found in bread, pasta, wheat products, etc.

How I Cured My Hair Loss

Being so young and losing your hair is scary, especially if you try to sort the problem out yourself. There are so many websites explaining hair loss, and they all seem to say different things. This is a step-by-step guide to how I cured my hair loss.

Steps I Took

  1. About one year ago, I found that I was leaving many strands of hair on my pillow each morning, and every time I dried my hair with a towel, the towel would be covered in hair. Even running my hand through my hair meant losing at least a few strands, so I went to see my doctor.
  2. My doctor asked if I had any family history of hair loss, and I told him that my father was bald (although everyone else in my family has a full head of hair). He prescribed two medicines: One was a topical (Rogaine) and the other was a pill (Propecia).
  3. I took the medicine for a couple of months and applied the lotion, but when I didn't see any benefit, I stopped taking the medicine. I went back to the doctor and he said the hair loss could be hormonal or due to stress and that I should wait a while to see if it went away by itself. It didn't.
  4. I started to research online. I found out that vitamin deficiencies are a leading cause of premature hair loss, so I started to take a multivitamin. To my surprise, it worked slightly, as the amount of hair that I lost decreased, but I still had hair loss.
  5. I started to research vitamin deficiencies and found out that there are a few main causes, including leaky gut and Coeliac, both of which cause the small intestine to basically attack itself, resulting in the malabsorption of vitamins and minerals.
  6. I started a strict diet, which involved no wheat or gluten, (there are alternatives for these, including tasty cakes and breads that can be found in your supermarket).
  7. I also found out that a dairy intolerance can lead to balding. Since my dad has always suffered from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), I tried quitting dairy, too. After these dietary changes, my overall health improved and my hair loss slowed considerably.
  8. After more research, I found that sufferers of Coeliac (which I now know I have) are usually deficient in calcium, vitamin D, and iron, so I started to take daily supplements of each of these. After only a few weeks, my hair loss stopped completely.

What I Learned From My Research

Hair loss is a sign that there is something wrong with your body. Rather than trying to fix it with shampoos and medications, try fixing things such as your sleep patterns, alcohol intake, and even diet. It's not what you put on your scalp but what you put in your body that really makes a difference.

Another important thing is to learn how to control stress. Seeing your hair fall out is really stressful, especially if you are young, but it is important to learn how to relax, as this will also help in reducing your hair loss.

Head and Shoulders Shampoo

There have been rumors flying around the Internet about the effect of Head and Shoulders shampoo on hair loss. I used Head and Shoulders Hair Retain for Men for a couple of months. After I started taking the vitamins and changed my diet, I could still feel that my scalp was itchy, and a few hairs were still falling out from the top of my head.

I decided to stop using Head and Shoulders and switch to a more natural shampoo (I now use L'occitane, which can be purchased from department stores) and my hair loss stopped completely. I can't say definitely whether or not it was because my body was still recovering, or whether it was in fact because I stopped using that brand of shampoo, but I can tell you that after switching shampoos, my scalp and hair are a lot healthier!

This may not help everyone, but it worked for me, and I hope that by writing this, I will be able to help at least one other person beat their hair loss!

I am wondering if fish oil or krill oil has something to do with it as well. I think fish oil tends to thin your blood and I remember this really started for me when using fish oil! Thank you, for this info. (I am already gl, df, and I don't use shampoo with SLS, which also causes scalp irritation). Likewise, I take a little iodine which I also think helps.

Shweta Majahan on August 12, 2014:

@Erica: One can use cholecalciferol vitamin D granule sachets. They are normally 50000 i.u. So first get checked for deficiency. If you're deficient then take 1 sachet with milk every week for 2-3 months. Also apply some vitaliser such as Regen to address other deficiencies.

erica on August 11, 2014:

What brand of the Vitamin D do you use?

Shweta Majahan on August 11, 2014:

If you're experiencing drastic hairfall then don't waste your time in home remedies. They have a limited effect. Try some specialised ayurvedic medicine such as Regen hair vitalizer. Don't play around with this serious problem.

Cristina on August 07, 2014:

Excessive hair shedding can be caused by a few factors; hormonal (especially after birth) is very common - do not panic, it will stop. Post-surgery is also normal.

If these things are ruled out (and even if they're not), the author is absolutely right; topical treatments have very limited effect (if any).

In the last 3 months, I barely shed 2-3 strands in the shower...this compared to a year of heavy shedding, the type that alarmed me and those who knew me, having gone from a thick head of hair to thin, limp, dry strands. Blood tests showed low vitamin D but everything else was normal.

So, I started taking Vitamin D, Biotin, a probiotic and a multi vitamin daily. I also upped my protein intake (a major contributor to hair loss which goes largely unnoticed). I can't eat a lot of meat so I substituted with protein shakes - about 2 shakes per day of high quality protein powder. As soon as I did the latter - within a month - hair stopped shedding dead in its tracks.

I can't say for sure which treatment was responsible...maybe a combination of all. Oh, and I also cut dairy out (and most gluten, but not all).

I know it seems like a lot of effort...but it's worth it. The fact that I can feel my hair regaining fullness is priceless.

i had hair loss for 3 years all balding slowing until i started eating wholemeal bread without any spirit vinegar or preservatives, just palm oil in it and wholegrain wheat fresh from supermarket bakery, my hair is started to grow now and slowly covering up the bald patch, i also stoped all spicy foods ans acidic fruits which is major cause of inflamation of the stomach, i was nutrient deficient ans wholemeal bread provided me al the nutrients for hair growth, but celiac people should avout bread if they are allergic to it, milk was also causing balding as i was milk intollerance

Man, I got exact same vitamin D, Iron deficiency. This I learnt 3 months back. Also I get bowel malfunctinoing if have more milk. Also at the same time I was under stress and depressed mood (still continues) and less sleep. I think all these had effect on my hair density and thickness. I started observing hair fall aince 3 months and now it has reached alarming level that I read ur article. I will now onwards take supplements and make sure to be stress free n take good sleep. Hope this would help to stop hair fall and allow regrowth. I can only wish and hope this happens in next 3 months.

Have any of you thought of the medication you may have been prescribe by your doctor. Please read all side effects. I have had huge difficulty with loss of hair. First time around Tramadol (painkiller) grew back four to six moths later. Now taken myself off the just in case Blood Pressure and Beata Blockers (all cause hair loss). I have been on blood thinners for nearly a year and will be very pleased when the three remaining months are over. Still struggling with hair loss. I refuse to take three of the meds after a heart attack as they made me feel so terrible. The doc says you are at risk well blood pressure is normal and everything else is. I have now changed diet and gone vegan. Hopefully that is going to help. Please guys look at medication they are such adverse affects on some sensitive souls.

Good info KdEy! Which high Carbohydrate Gluten Free foods are you referring to that would be bad to substitute?

KdeY on February 09, 2014:

Thank You for the article, I can second your findings...

I am a 42 yr old female, my daughter, at the time when we both were suffering unexplained hair loss, was 16...We both saw our Dr, she said 'we'll keep an eye on it' That was NOT good enough for me. Emailed our Chief Endo at our local Children's Hospital and begged her to see our daughter (that she emailed me back was a miracle) I told her we weren't getting anywhere with our GP and that I knew whatever it was we both had the same issue.

From my symptoms (which my Dr wouldn't test for) I had them tested by an independent lab in the States....and found to be LOW in EVERYTHING and given our shared hair loss, the Endo said it sounded like an absorption issue, tested my daughter for Celiac (I was already off Gluten and wasn't about to start eating it again and loose more hair) wouldn't you know it, it came back 4 times higher than a week positive....! "Keep an eye on it my ass" Hair loss is an indication of an Auto Immune issue, the Canary in the Coal Mine, ignore it at your peril.

So, OK, I'll never eat Gluten again, big deal. How did I get to the tipping point in the first place. I make everything from scratch, well nearly, we're never sick etc etc...What I've discovered ties into everything discussed here, what I found is that it starts with a Candida overgrowth, too many bad gut bacteria is not good, this is easily caused by antibiotics (most women have had a yeast infection after a round of antibiotics), but an extremely stressful event and not eating enough fermented foods may also contribute to the imbalance. Men and Women have this equally: Athletes Foot, Dandruff, Eczema, all of the signs are there, we just ignore them, or we try to cover them up when it is an 'internal issue' coming out.

Clean up your diet. I did and my hair loss has stopped, it's growing in again, my thin patches don't show anymore, but it's still not as thick...The next thing I eliminate will be dairy, right now we've been Lactose Free for 4 months, if it's not growing like a Chia Pet by Summer, Dairy is gone. I have always had huge Scottish hair, you never know just how vein you are until you start loosing your hair, the only thing that got me to a blood lab, that's for sure.

Incidentally, poor gut health will lead to 'leaky gut' which may trigger Celiac Disease, IB etc etc, once you have Celiac, you're more likely to acquire at least 1 other Auto Immune Disease...Diabetes, MS, Arthritis etc Not a rosy picture, how many North Americans have those issues?

Low Vit D is an indication that you're unable to absorb fat soluble vitamins, common with 'leaky gut', Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity and Celiac itself. 50% of the population (of European decent) carry the gene for Celiac, but it needs to be triggered, illness, antibiotic use, stress etc...Low Ferritin is another clear indication of an absorption issue, my 'Dr' (I use the term loosely here) thought that my below 10 Ferritin reading was perfectly normal. Surgeons (good ones) won't operate on you below 10, if you want to wake up after surgery that is.

My father went 'Cpt Picard' at 17 and never knew why. It is genetic to a degree, more likely 'Epigenetic' we become as healthy as the Petri dish solution we surround ourselves with, slather on us and consume. You are what you eat, if your hair is falling out you are most likely having a gut health related problem. Have everything tested and pay for it yourself if you have to, take supplements, they do work, fix your diet, up to 1 in 3 people may have issues with gluten and get rid of ALL sugar, drink more non chlorinated. non fluoridated water and exercise! Good luck to all of you. I never before noticed how many people are out there with thinning hair, once I started loosing mine, I became a bit hair obsessed.

Anxiety (had that-it's now gone), depression, tooth/gum issues, bad breath, joint pain, fatigue all of these are signs of Celiac, there are about 300 more. In Australia, Celiac is now 1 in 60 women and 1 in 80 men, 1 in 6 are Gluten Sensitive. Boxed, packaged garbage, gluten is in EVERYTHING. Eat whole foods, Paleo/SCD or GAPS. Whatever you do, don't switch your bad Gluten Foods for bad high Carbohydrate Gluten Free foods, bad is bad. Take Care, K

warning on January 01, 2014:

Men please be careful using iron supplements. If you're not deficient it can do very serious and gradual harm. Iron can only be lowered through blood loss or in emergencies by a drug/iv procedure.

And to add on to that Hemochromatosis is becoming a more known problem, but its still not often checked for.

Usually its women who are low on iron, so unless you're maybe vegetarian or give blood multiple times a year, its very unlikely you are deficient.
