Improve Circulation With Nitric Oxide

Nitric oxide is the best chemical or substance for circulation, cardiovascular health and preventing heart attacks and strokes. This is what the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1998 was for. Nitric Oxide (NO) is different from nitrous oxide (N2O) that is also called laughing gas.

The pictures on the right show the 3 winners of this Nobel prize. Robert F Furchgott is a pharmacologist in New York, NY. Ferid Murad is an MD and pharmacologist in Houston, TX. Louis J Ignarro is a pharmacologist in Los Angeles, CA.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1998 says:

Further research results rapidly confirmed that NO [nitric oxide] is a signal molecule of key importance for the cardiovascular system and it was also found to exert a series of other functions. We know today that NO acts as a signal molecule in the nervous system, as a weapon against infections, as a regulator of blood pressure and as a gatekeeper of blood flow to different organs. NO is present in most living creatures and made by many different types of cells. When NO is produced by the innermost cell layer of the arteries, the endothelium, it rapidly spreads through the cell membranes to the underlying muscle cells.

Cancer: White blood cells use NO not only to kill infectious agents such as bacteria, fungi and parasites, but also to defend the host against tumours [tumors].

In 1992, Science Magazine said that nitric oxide was the molecule of the year. It is called the body's miracle molecule. Dr. Ignarro calls nitric oxide the most significant molecule in your body. It causes the arteries to dilate and become wider so blood can pass through it easier. This also lowers high blood pressure. By making it easier for blood to flow there are almost unlimited benefits of this since every cell in the body depends on blood to get nutrients.

There are over 50,000 published papers and clinical trials showing the healing power of this molecule. They include the Lancet, Harvard Medical School, American Heart Association, In Vivo, Behavioural Brain Research, Kidney International, American Heart Association and The Journal of the American Medical Association.

According to the Journal of Translational Medicine. 2010;1075, it softens hardened arteries. The Clinical Journal of Pain. 2008 May;24(4); 353-65 says it may produce substantial pain relief and decrease inflammation in joints. Journal of Clinical Hypertension. 2006;8(12 Suppl 4):53-62 says it produces stronger erections. Journal of Applied Physics. 2010;109(5);1394-403 says that it extends time to exhaustion in severe-intensity workouts.

Nitric Oxide promotes healthy arteries, healthy vision and healthy cholesterol. It supports a healthy heart and healthy blood sugar levels. It increases energy and stamina. It enhances concentration, memory and sexual performance.

Foods That Increase Nitric Oxide in the Body

One way to increase nitric oxide in the body is by consuming beets. You can buy beet juice or juice it yourself using the root and even the leaves. Many athletes have consumed beets to enhance performance. A study showed that consuming beets increases nitric oxide in the blood that helped the brain to get more blood. Beet root juice supports immunity and helps to protect against tumors – two of many health benefits of beetroot.

Consume the herb hawthorn berries and other parts of the plant. See Health Benefits of Hawthorn Berries. This herb has been known as the best herb for heart health and the health of the arteries. Eat more fruits and nuts since they contain the amino acids L-Arginine and L-Citrulline that create nitric oxide. Other foods that cause the body to produce more nitric oxide in the body include dark chocolate, pomegranate, walnuts, brown rice, spinach, oranges, cranberries, garlic, black tea, green tea, cayenne pepper, honey, pistachio nuts, salmon, shrimp, kale, onions, and peanut butter. I like to drink green tea and yerba mate tea. It is extremely popular in South America and the national drink of Argentina. It has more chlorogenic acid than green tea. This chlorogenic acid protects the nitric acid in your body and produces more if needed. See Health Benefits of Yerba Mate Tea.

Exercise is an obvious way to increase more of this molecule in the body. Also the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that showed that nitric oxide helps build strong bones.

Also instead of listening to the drug pushers that want you to buy the drug known as sunscreen, get more sunlight. See the picture at the top. The UV-B rays of the sun create vitamin D that has lots of benefits but the UV-A light from the sun creates nitric oxide in the body. The picture shows that the UV-B light is strongest around noon and before 10AM and after 4 PM it is too weak to produce vitamin D.

This is also influenced by how far you live from the equator. Like at the latitude of Boston, MA, there are 3 months of the year where the sunlight is too weak to create vitamin B. But the UV-A light is high throughout the whole day. Also you can get plenty of it all year round in Boston or even in other places that are further from the equator. Now I do not expect you to trust me on this so here are some authoritative sources on this.

Here is a taken down Science Daily article called Here comes the sun to lower your blood pressure. It said:

Exposing skin to sunlight may help to reduce blood pressure and thus cut the risk of heart attack and stroke, a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology suggests.

The results suggest that UVA exposure dilates blood vessels, significantly lowers blood pressure, and alters NO [nitric oxide] metabolite levels in the circulation, without changing vitamin D levels.

Here is PubMed Central that is part of the U.S. National Library of Medicine: Beneficial effects of UV radiation other than via vitamin D production. It says:

Most of the positive effects of solar radiation are mediated via ultraviolet-B (UVB) induced production of vitamin D in skin.

Furthermore, UVA generates nitric oxide (NO), which may reduce blood pressure and generally improve cardiovascular health. UVA-induced NO may also have antimicrobial effects and furthermore, act as a neurotransmitter.

The rapid release of NO following UVA exposure suggests the existence of latent stores.

The 3 main causes of death in Americans is heart attacks, cancer and strokes. Strokes do not kill most of the people that get it but it causes many of them to be disabled for life. The UVA light will help prevent heart attacks and strokes and the UVB light will create vitamin D that prevents cancer. See Cancer and Vitamin D. July 24, 2015 Update

Dermatologist Richard Weller M.D. makes a TED video and asks why sunlight improves cardiovasular health, He says that vitamin D does not account for all of the above. So he did tests and found that sunlight creates nitric oxide in the skin. He says that due to the different degrees of sunlight the people in Great Britain has 3 times as much heart disease as the people in Australia.

Our bodies get Vitamin D from the sun, but as dermatologist Richard Weller M.D. suggests, sunlight may confer another surprising benefit too. Nitric Oxide!
