The botanical or scientific name of the golden apple, elephant apple or stone apple is aegle marmelos. It is known as bael or bilva in India.
The plant is a small or medium-sized deciduous tree, maximum up to 18 meters in height, with straight and sharp thorns. It is found in dry forests of India, Nepal, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Philippines, Fiji, Laos, Cambodia, Malay Peninsula, Thailand, Myanmar, Java, nd Pakistan. It has been mentioned in writings dating back to 2000 BC. The plant is grown in some Egyptian gardens and in Trinidad and Suriname.
The fruit, leaves, bark and fruit pulp are all useful for medicinal purpose.
The peculiar thing of the plant is the structure of its leaves, which generally have three foliage. The tree can cope with water logging and even with the soil having p-H value from 5-11. Its temperature tolerance is surprising that is from -7°C to 48°C.
The flowers of the plant are greenish, white, sweet scented with 4-5 petals. The flowering and fruit giving time is from summer to spring.
The fruit takes about 11 months to ripen and is up to 10 cm in diameter. The oblong and hairy seeds are compressed within yellow, sticky, sweet and aromatic woody mucous pulp. The fruit shell is very hard and could only be broken with hammer to reach at the seeds.

The roots, skin, fruits and the leaves contain tannin. It helps to cure diabetes and is effective against 21 types of bacteria.
Leaves – The consumption of leaves, by chewing few leaves daily or taking their fresh juice alleviates diabetes. It increases anti-oxidants in the body which lowers the elevated glucose level. The fruit extract improves insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It also helps in improving memory impairment caused by diabetes.
The intake of leaves and tender shoots is best in the green salad.
The juice of the leaves, when applied on eyelids, is the best for conjunctivitis. When mixed with warm water and little black pepper, it alleviates the severity of respiratory spasms in asthma.
For jaundice, grind 5 gram of leaves and add 1 spoon of honey and take twice a day.
Root – A preparation made from the roots with ginger and roasted rice cures vomiting.
For piles, dysentery, and diarrhea, a preparation made from the roots mixed and ground with another tuberous root ginger, garlic etc., can be taken.
The oil extracted from the roots and boiled with the juice of leaves when massaged on head is best for nasal catarrh and diseases of the ear.
Fruit –The pale tawny pulp of unripe fruit is sweet and contains tannin, which acts as an astringent to the bowels.
The ripe fruit acts like a laxative and cleans up the intestines.
The fruit has a pleasant, agreeable and aromatic flavor, and provides an excellent dietary supplement in juice with lemon which acts as an appetizer and blood purifier.
The dry pulp powdered and mixed with arrowroot has curative value.
The fruit extract has cytotoxic effect against tuberculosis.
It is also rich in vitamin C, calcium, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, phosphorus, and niacin. The calorific value of stone fruit is 137.
The chemical constituents identified are alkaloids, steroids, and coumarin.
The leaves contain ergosterol, aegelin, and skimmianine.
While the fruit has mar merosin ( similar to imperatorin ), alto imperatorin and B-sitosterol.
The roots have psora lin, xanthotoxin, tembamide and scopoletin.
Beta-cell in pancreas get damaged due to oxidative stress caused by alloxan. In various research, alloxan produced hyperglycemia in rats. But the leaf extract reduced diabetes in rats.
Stone apple extract is effective to reduce and control the oxidative stress caused by alloxan and it acts as a medicine to produce desired results in control and reduction of blood sugar.
Excess use causes constipation and the patients of hypoglycemia and those using heart medicines should consult their physician.
The ripe fruit should not be taken regularly, as it produces a lack of elasticity in the abdomen.
The heavy dose creates a sensation of heaviness in the stomach.
