What is Metabolism?
It has always been said that every man on the planet is created equal, which is very true. However when it comes to the natural processes of the human body such as your metabolism, there is nothing further from the truth, everyone is not equal. Some people are just born lucky and are blessed with some awesome genetics/metabolism that allows them to eat all kinds of greasy, fried, and fattening foods all day, every day and it really does not shows any affect on them physically and they do not even gain an ounce of weight/fat. Of course they might suffer from other afflictions such as high cholesterol, blood pressure or other health issues later in life, but that's on a whole other subject. Then there's the other group of people that simply look at a hamburger and gain 15 lbs. It sounds funny but it seems as if it actually happens. It's all due to the speed of your metabolism and everyone's body processes foods in a different manner. Your metabolism is the chemical process of your body breaking down what you have consumed/eaten, converting it into energy and systematically using it to assist your body in it's digesting process, growing, and reproducing.Your personal/family history, your age (after 40 years of age it slows down naturally), and your sex (men generally have more lean muscle than women thus burn more calories and have a higher metabolic rate) and the amount of physical activity you participate in are all factors that will affect how fast you burn what you've eaten and how fast you will gain/lose weight. But there are always loop holes or ways you can manipulate your metabolism to be faster and more efficient.

One thing you have to understand is, your metabolism doesn't have a memory. You can eat clean and healthy for several weeks or months at a time, but your metabolism only knows what you have eaten/fed it today. That's something to consider when you decide you deserve a cheat meal/day and eat a lot of food with high fat content, especially if your metabolic rate is one of the naturally slower variety. Ironically the more weight you carry, the more likely it is for your rate to be higher. Because of their larger size, an overweight persons rate is already working extremely hard, even when the person is resting/doing nothing. So any kind of change in their diet/cut in calories will result in almost instant weight loss. This is why it's so much easier for an overweight/obese person to drop large amounts of weight in a short period of time. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so the more muscles you have, the higher your metabolic rate will likely be, even on your lazy days/at rest. A pound of muscle burns approximately 40 calories a day, a pound of fat burns about 2 - 4 calories a day. So you get the picture. Change your body composition and get some muscles!!!

The goal that you should be trying to obtain is to get your body to stop accumulating fat and start burning it off. When you lose a considerable amount of muscle and body fat, this also means your body will require less calories to support itself. This is why it is so easy to regain the weight back, after you have lost it. A good resistance weight training/exercise routine is a good place to start. You have to eat in order to maintain it. Some people insist on cutting calories or taking appetite suppressants and then add a lot of exercise or aerobic activity. This type of "body starvation" will cause your body to hoard calories and store them as fat. Ironically if you are not eating consistently, at least a normal 3 times a day, you will gain weight rather than lose. There are those people that have the misconception if they don't eat or skip a meal, they wont gain weight. If your diet is not conducive to burning fat, this will cause more harm then good and does not help your metabolism at all. Not eating sends the body into panic mode and it will start to protect itself and anything you do put in your mouth, will be stored as fat.

Improve your metabolism
Weight training/exercise that burns calories and promotes muscle growth is one of the best ways to give your metabolism a good kick in the upwards direction. While 45 minutes of aerobic training will actually burn more calories than 45 minutes of intense weight training, some people prefer to do cardio as it is more of a quick fix. However the weight training has a much longer, lasting effect on your body. Having more muscle means you can eat more while gaining less. Eating 5 to 6 small meals a day will keep your metabolism working hard to burn fat consistently. Consuming protein, low calories, and carbohydrates in each of these meals, which is broken down and absorbed quickly and keeping an eye on your macro nutrient ratio (cut down starches, increase protein and eat "good fats") will keep it working efficiently. Keeping yourself well hydrated and drinking at least eight 12 ounce glasses of water daily will also help your metabolism. Your body requires water for pretty much every process that it goes through, which also includes burning fat, digestion process, and producing energy. Dietary supplements that contain caffeine, green tea or other fat burner properties (stimulants) will also assist in raising the metabolism. A regular exercise routine, a healthy diet and eating 5 to 6 times a day will definitely boost and keep your metabolism at its high, optimum peak.

I start my day with a protein shake then second meal is eggs or a bowl of oatmeal. I never skip breakfast and I almost always eat 6 to 7 meals per day. I loved your article very full of information, I will recomend in my circles for a great read.

By far, eggs are one of the best and easiest protein rich food foods to digest, whey protein isolates and steak are also good sources that are digested well.

Calories in - Calories out is an incorrect formula most believe in. Eating as you said 6 meals a day with the same calories as 2 meals you can actually lose weight. Not to say eating 6 healthier meals with a slightly lower will not yield better results.

Your absolutely right! It not good to skips meals becuase you want your metabolism to keep working so you be able to lose the weight. I here people all the time talk about skipping meals or just eating one meal a day. Very good hub and useful information.
