Remedies for Baby

Treating a sick baby can be super confusing and frustrating. What do they have? Is this safe for them to have? How much of this medicine are they allowed? Should I call the doctor?

Let's break down the common items I keep on hand for when I start noticing something is not right with my little guy.

Vapor Bath

If you find that your little one has a cough with a runny nose a vapor bath can make a huge difference. Essential Oils and steam can go a long way in clearing out the sinuses and breaking up congestion. Oilogic makes a great Stuffy Nose & Cough Vapor Bath and you can find it right on the shelf at Target or Walmart.

Humidifier

If your little one is showing more sinus infection symptoms you'll want to invest in a good humidifier to help keep the air moist and breathable for when your heat starts cranking and rooms become dry and stagnant. You may even find a humidifier that has a pocket to place some essential oils to help disperse through the air.

Saline Solution

Keeping your little ones nose clear can make all the difference in how they feel. Grab a bottle of saline solution from the store to have on hand whenever seasons change or you start to see symptoms of a stuffy nose forming. They won't like the process of getting the spray or drops in their nose but it will offer relief quickly.

Baby Vicks Vapor Rub

This is a great way to give your coughing baby some relief at night. And you can even use it on yourself! Grab some Baby Vicks (adults can use regular vicks) rub and smear it on the feet of your baby. Place socks on and put them to bed. Coughing should subside within minutes and your baby should sleep right through the night cough free. I can attest to also doing this to myself and it helps me get a good nights sleep as well. Give it a try, you won't be sorry!

Remedies for the Parents

Remember taking care of yourself is equally as important as taking care of your babies. If you are not healthy and feeling okay, how can you be expected to take care of little ones?

Epsom Salt Bath

Detox your body of all the sickness by soaking in an Epsom salt bath for 20-30 minutes. There are a variety of Epsom baths for different symptoms and aches that will be sure to help speed up your recovery process. You can usually even grab a bag of Epsom salts from the dollar store for super cheap. My favorite is the lavender scented soak because it helps for a good nights sleep.

Immune Support

Keep some Zinc on hand to pop one when you're feeling under the whether. I wouldn't take it daily as your immune system can start to become dependent on it, but taking some when you feel a cold coming on can help give your immune system the boost it needs.

ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar)

ACV is a great way to keep your body on its A game throughout the whole year. Whenever I feel a sore throat coming on I make a morning drink and night drink to help soothe my throat and break up any chest congestion. Here's the recipe:

  • 8 oz Hot Water
  • 1 tsp ACV
  • 2 tsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp. Lemon Juice
  • Dash Cinnamon

Essential Oils

There are tons of essential oil recipes to help with sinus infections, sore throats, clogged ears, and much more. I'll keep it basic for you for right now. If you feel like you're having a hard time breathing through your nose take a few drops of peppermint oil into your palm and rub your palms together. Do Not Rub In With Your Fingers. Cup your hands and breath in slowly through your nose. Your nasal passages will open up and it'll offer you some relief. If you have a diffuser look up some oils to diffuse in your home to help you breath easier and decongest at home.

Over the Counter Medicine

If you feel like the remedies just aren't doing enough. Give these over the counter meds a try to help speed up the procces.

When it's time to Call the Dr.

If you feel like you're not seeing any progress do not hesitate to call your pediatrician or doctor. There are often times things go undiagnosed for too long when they don't have to be. Even just calling to speak with your doctor can give you some clarity on just what you're dealing with without even having to go in.

Take advantage of your wellness visits with your little ones as well. Bring up any questions you have while you're there so you can have all the info you need for when your little one gets sick. If we can learn to be pro-active we won't have to be as re-active.
