Turquoise can come in multiple shapes and sizes.

Turquoise has been a favored gemstone for centuries by the Egyptians and Native Americans. It was commonly used as a symbol of loyalty and protection. The ancient Egyptians considered it a stone of royalty and it was used by pharaohs to decorate their homes and helms.

Chemically, turquoise is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminum. It is generally found in arid places such as in deserts. The stone gets it's name from the French word for Turkey, because it was originally believed that the stone had originated from that country.

Turquoise has long been a popular stone for gemstone healing. It helps with a wide array of problems and it is fairly easy to obtain. Turquoise is a great gem for people who are beginning to learn how to heal with gemstones. It is also considered a very calming, soothing color that can be used in color therapy as well.

Healing with Gemstones

Turquoise is a stone used to heal a great many ailments. Turquoise jewelry is one of the easiest methods to use in healing with turquoise and is great to wear in use of curing various ailments. Turquoise bracelets worn around the wrist can help aid in alleviating arthritis pain. Turquoise worn around the waist, such as on a belt, can help alleviate back pain as well as stomach/menstrual cramps. When worn around the neck, such as on a necklace, turquoise can help with throat ailments, as well as encourage good communication and speaking.

One should always have a clear mind and be centered before beginning any healing with gemstones. Gemstones can emit the healers energies and feelings. So if the healer is troubled by something, or not in a clear state of mind, this will transfer through the stone to the client, therefore messing up the entire effect the stone may have had on the healing process.

Keeping gemstones with you at all times will help in the healing process. Decorate your house in your favorite gemstones, or the gemstones you need for the time being to help you heal through a certain problem or ailment. Sleeping with gemstones under your pillow is also a great way to encourage healing through gemstones.

If you know someone who could be helped by the use of gemstones, make them a pouch filled with gemstones that can be of help to them. Giving away gemstones is a great way to encourage healing amongst friends and family.

Gemstone healing is something that takes time and practice to learn. Most early Native Americans believed that people could not learn how to gemstone heal from other people, but rather, they learned how to heal from the gemstones themselves. Research the different gemstones, make lists of their healing properties, and begin making your own elixirs and gemstone grids to help you learn about how to heal with gemstones.

Healing Set-Up

The healer would typically wear turquoise in the form of some sort of jewelry - such as a necklace, bracelet, ring, or multiple pieces of jewelry. Then, they would have their client hold a piece of turquoise, or they would lay out a piece of turquoise on a part of their body needing healing. The healer may also choose to set up an altar (or crystal grid) with it's intention being geared towards healing their client.

As a healer, keep in mind that you should approach the healing with no negative thoughts or energies. Your emotions and intentions can disrupt the healing, so be sure to approach your client with positive thoughts and with good intentions.

Making a Turquoise Gemstone Elixir

To make a gemstone elixir from turquoise, you must first clean off the gemstone. Any impurities, such as dirt on the stone, ruin the healing effect of the elixir. Next, fill up a glass or a bowl with purified water. Place the stone inside the water and let it stand in a window in the sunlight for around 12 hours. This can be used to anoint the body, to anoint a crystal altar/grid, or used in sprays for around the house.

Cleaning Turquoise and Other Gemstones

The purpose behind cleansing a gemstone is to help rid it of the negative energy it may have helped eradicate, as well as to help recharge it.

There are multiple ways that you can cleanse and re-tune gemstones. Every crystal healer seems to have their own method, some of them insisting that their method is the only appropriate method. The truth is that you should do what works best for you and your gemstone. Every gemstone is different, so you might have several turquoise pieces that each one requires a different cleansing method.

All that being said, here are a few methods that you can try to see what works best for you:

  • Water Method - Some people dislike this method, but it is quick, efficient, and can get the job done if it is the right method of your particular stone. All you have to do is run filtered or natural (well or spring) water over the crystal for a few minutes. After the water bath, allow the stone to dry under direct sunlight for a few hours to recharge.
  • Sage Method - A few sprigs of fresh sage left with your gemstones can help cleanse and recharge them. Be sure to only use good quality, organic sage; preferably sage you grew yourself.
  • Salt Method - Fill up a container with kosher or sea salt. Add your crystals and cover them completely with the salt. Allow the stones to sit in the salt overnight or around 12 hours.

There are multiple cleansing methods that you can try, and you will likely have to use multiple methods with each stone. The best thing to do is to try several of them until you find the methods that work well for you.

Final Thoughts on Turquoise Healing

As with all forms of magic and holistic healing, turquoise will not help you at all if you don't actively work towards your goal of self-healing. Improving your diet, lifestyle, and positive energy are just a few of the things that you can do in conjunction with turquoise healing to help assist you in achieving your goals.

@St. Cyprian: My dad is Cherokee and he always carried a turquoise piece when traveling. It's a very soothing stone and color. Thanks for reading!

St.Cyprian on December 23, 2011:

Great hub! Great job on the elixir portion, especially. Growing up, I was told that the American Indians who migrated from place to place between seasons carried this stone with them for protection and luck in their new location. I've always considered it a good stone for traveling.

Also, the color turquoise seems to be associated with spiritual breakthroughs - that state where you're moving on to higher states of consciousness.

Great hubs!

Accolades and voting up!
