Garbage Enzyme

I like to share information that makes life more joyful and meaningful. My main interests are health and general wellness in body and mind.

What Is Garbage Enzyme?

Garbage enzyme was first developed by Dr. Rosukon of Thailand.

In very simple language, garbage ezyme is the product of fermentation of vegetable/fruit wastes in a mixture of water and brown sugar after a period of 3 months. The final garbage enzyme liquid is obtained after filtration and removal of the residue. It is the process of fermentation with the key ingredient of brown sugar that is metabolized by bacteria into alcohol which is subsequently reduced to acetic acid or vinegar.

It is very easy to make garbage enzyme. The main ingredients are vegetable cuttings and fruit peels and fruit skins. The other ingredient is brown sugar. Then you add water and let ferment for 3 months. That simple! I know because I am making the garbage enzyme. The ratio is 1 part brown sugar, 3 parts vege/fruit cuttings, and 10 parts water.

The use of this garbage enzyme is reported to be able to help reduce global warming. The name "garbage enzyme" is a bit of a misnomer because the main ingredients are not actually the filthy garbage, but clean vegetable and fruit peelings. As for me, I use mainly pineapple peelings.

Method Of Making Garbage Enzyme.

  • Use plastic container with air-tight cap, preferably with bigger cap. Avoid using those soft drink bottles with small caps. They are the ones that may even "explode" if left unopened. Do not use glass containers.
  • Mix 1 part brown sugar, 3 parts organic (fruit & vege) waste, and 10 parts water.
  • My preferences are pineapple skin, orange peel, any citrus leftover, and papaya skin.
  • Leave some space for fermentation.
  • Close the lid tightly.
  • Initially, release the bottle cap at least once a day, to let out the built-up gas.
  • After a few days, gas built-up will be reduced.
  • Gently shake the bottle to mix the garbage, once every few days.
  • During the process, white, black or brown residue may form at the top. Just ignore them.
  • After 3 months, the enzyme is ready for use.
  • Filter and remove the vegetable/fruit peels.
  • The enzyme will have a dark brown color.

Uses For Garbage Enzyme

The garbage enzyme should be diluted for use. There are numerous uses for garbage enzyme. The following are the common uses.

  • As a general household cleaning liquid. Dilute with water or add to detergent.
  • Remove foul odours, molds and grime in the kitchen and toilet.
  • Drive insects away, especially spraying on plants.
  • Cleaning carpets and remove ticks.
  • For laundry.
  • Moping floors.
  • Washing cars.
  • Fertilizer for plants.

Diluting ratios: (I personally do not follow the ratios. After years of using garbage enzyme, I just add in the amount I feel comfortable with.)

Dilution Ratio

Enzyme for fertilizer 1:100 / 500 / 1000 Enzyme for insecticide 1:1000Enzyme for pesticide 1:100For anti odour / air freshener Dilute 200x As plant hormones to get more flowers and fruits Dilute 500x

When garbage enzyme is diluted with water, it becomes more effective.

For shampoos, dish-washing liquids, detergents: add 1 teaspoon of enzymes for 500cc, 1 tablespoon of enzymes for 1 litre to enhance the nutrients and reduce the side effects of the chemicals in the detergents.

Garbage Enzyme Is Not Fruit Enzyme

Please note that garbage enzyme is not fruit enzyme. Garbage enzyme is not for human consumption. Whereas fruit enzyme is. Fruit enzyme is a nutritious drink prepared through proper fermentation of fruits. You can click to read my article "Benefits of fruit enzyme".

Thanks. I was thinking durian is so full of nutrient that maybe if i make fruit enzyme it will be very good. You are right. Better not use durian. Thanks again.

Good evening Choy,

I don't know, but my feeling is that durian is a very "unique and sensitive" fruit which is best to avoid for fruit enzyme.

Can i use durian to make fruit enzyme?

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on April 01, 2013:

Hi Canne 47,

Best to follow instructions.

I keep my GE for many months before using it.

Canne on April 01, 2013:

Hi,

What will happen if I leave the GE to ferment more than 3 months without filteration ? Is it still good ? I noticed that there is no more gas when I opened the over & the GE color is very dark brown like coke. How long can we keep this GE for use? 6 months or 1 year? Thanks

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on October 24, 2012:

Hi S 64,

I just follow instructions. I think if the gas built up, the glass may crack. Best is just to follow the instructions.

Does garbage enzyme content lactic acid?

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on May 21, 2012:

Hi Charmaine,

If you follow the instructions, you should have good enzyme. Personally I only use fruit cuttings, especially pineapple.

May i know what are the factors affecting the quality of garbage enzyme?

Chocolate cebu on March 13, 2012:

Do we need to follow the right proportion of the ingredient in making garbage enzyme? Why? How come my garbage enzyme doesn't seem effective? Please help. I need theses for my prroject.

How come we cannot use white sugar in making garbage enzyme?

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on December 02, 2011:

Hi mummyof3,

I just follow the instructions. Without brown sugar? Then you are just adding water to the peelings which I don't think it will work.

mummyof3 on December 01, 2011:

hi,

may i know is it possible to do GE without using any sugar??

tks..

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on November 22, 2011:

Hi chocolate cebu,

The brown sugar acts as a catalyst for fermentation.

chocolate cebu on November 22, 2011:

thanks! what's the role of brown sugar?

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on November 21, 2011:

Hi Chocolate Cebu,

You can use any fruit and vege peelings.

Hello Good Guy,

Is it possible to use the enzyme to clean the left over burn bits of Pandan Chiffon cake after removed the cake from the mould?

Cheers,

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on September 03, 2011:

Hi Noob,

If it is the whitish residue floating on the surface, then it is a natural process. When you filtered the enzyme, the whitish residue will be filtered away.

noob on September 03, 2011:

why are there white microorganism appeared in the garbage enzyme ? could it still be efficiency ? how can i solve this problem?

Thanks

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on June 20, 2011:

Hi nfh,

You add a bit of the enzyme to the shampoo or detergent, and mix it well, before using. I don't use it with my shampoo. For cleaning stubborn stain you can use the enzyme in concentrated form.

nfh on June 20, 2011:

I really need you reply to me ASAP,

I dont get the method of using this enzyme, can we just use it on its own or do we have to add the enzymes into the shampoos or detergent ?

thanks :)

some questions to ask....

1. is there any scientific paper work or report on the microorganism that do the fermentation process of garbage enzyme? where can i find or get the report?

2. is there any scientific research on garbage enzyme itself.. say the major active composition or enzyme group(s)...

3. how can i contact Dr. Rosukon....?

Justin Choo (author) from Malaysia on November 14, 2010:

Cing Yee,

i)why we must use brown sugar instead of white sugar?

Brown sugar contains an ingredient called molasses, which helps in fermentation.

ii) why we cannot use durian skins to make garbage enzyme?

I didn't know that, this is news to me. But why use durian skin when you can use other skins which are more manageable. As a guess, if what you said is true, then maybe because the durian skin produces a slimey substance called lye.
