Forever Lite Ultra With Aminotein Vs. Shakeology

An Unbiased Comparison of the Facts

There are tons of protein shakes available on the market. You can buy them at Wal-Mart, GNC, and a myriad of other stores. The fact as that most of the store brands are seriously lacking in nutional value. Two of the most popular NON-store brands are Forever Lite Ultra with Aminotein and Shakeology. I'm not here to tell you one is better than the other, I'm just going to present the nutrional facts and the taste test results. I've tried them both, so I think I can make a fair assessment of each.

Let's start with cost: Forever Lite Ultra with Aminotein costs $31.71 for a 15 serving bag including shipping costs to Canada and the continental US. Shakeology costs $129.95 for a 30 serving bag, and shipping is free if you sign up for autoship (which means you will automatically be shipped and charged for a re-order after your first 30-day supply is close to being finished.) If you don't sign up for autoship, the charge is a flat 8.25% for shipping, which equates to $10.72 for a 30 day supply. So, how does that work out cost-wise, because it's not just a matter of simple math. This article is based solely on retail prices, as of course disributors for both companies receive a dicounted price which may vary depending on their position.

Forever Lite Ultra With Aminotein requires two servings each day with 10 oz of skim milk to provide 100% of most of the vitamins and minerals that your body requires. That means each day the cost is $4.23 if you only buy a 15 serving supply, but if you buy a 30-serving supply, you still only pay the same shipping charge, so the cost per day would be reduced to $3.73. Shakeology's cost works out to be $4.33 (not including shipping if you aren't on autoship). With shipping it comes out to $4.69 per day. Shakeology only requires one shake to provide 100% of the vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that it provides, whereas Forever Lite Ultra With Aminotein requires two shakes each day.

Next amino acids. Forever Ultra Lite with Aminotein provides 18 amino acids compared to Shakeology's 8 amino acids. If you know anything about how the body functions, amino acids get converted into proteins which build muscle and several other organs in the body. There are 8 amino acids that are considered essential, which means your body can not make them, you have to get them from dietary sources. The 8 amino acids contained in Shakeology are the essentials ones. The 18 in Forever Lite Ultra are the 8 essential ones, plus ten addional ones that have been deemed as exceptionally important. Even though there are only 8 amino acids considered essential, there are also environmental and pollution factors to take into consideration which may be affecting your ability to ingest a sufficient quantity of protein to maintain good health.

Let's Look at Some Nutrition Concepts

Detailing a totally accurate assessment of the nutional facts for these products may prove to be somewhat daunting, as there are some proprietary blends of adaptogenic herbs involved. So, you may be asking, "What the H does that mean in English?" Proprietary means that the manufacturer does not have to disclose the information to customers or potential customers.

The term "adaptogenic herbs," is defined on as "a substance that demonstrates a non-specific enhancement of the bodies ability to resist a stressor." In other words, a stress reducer. Many physicians now believe that stress is a contributory factor in many diseases along with poor dietary habits. Imagine you've been eating a double cheeseburger with all the fixin's for the last 6 monthss every day for lunch. All of a sudden you step on the scale and discover you've gained 50 pounds, you might be stressed over all the weight you've gained, but that's the least of your problems. You should be stressed because you've increased your risk of coronary artery disease and Type 2 Diabetes both in one fell swoop.

Because processed foods are desgined to get you addicted to them, getting the weight off is going to be much more difficult than it was to put it on. That's where replacing one of your meals or two of your meals each day with a protein shake that provides all the necessary protein, vitamins, and minerals that your body needs can help you combat your hunger and lose weight at the same time

If you use a protein supplement one of the most important factors is knowing that it actually is absorbed by your body so it can get to work and do what it's supposed to be doing for you, whether it's helping you to lose weight, maintain your weight, or build lean muscle. If the protein isn't probably absorbed, it can't do any of those things. So, which is more easily absorbed by the body, whey protein or soy protein?

The Taste Test

I have tried Strawberry and Greenberry Shakeology in addition to both Chocolate and Vanilla Forever Lite Ultra With Aminotein. I prepared both with skim milk, so I would be comparing apples to apples. I was not impressed with the taste of either Shakeology flavor. I'm not going to say that they were bad-tasting, they were just funny tasting (kind of like eating clown fish-I tried it once, but it tasted funny). The strawberry had kind of a funky aftertaste, which I'm not sure exactly how to describe and the greenberry reminded me of grazing in a grassy pasture.

The Forever Lite Ultra with Aminotein Vanilla tastes something like vanilla ice cream and the chocolate tastes pretty much like a chocolate milk shake just not quite as thick. Both of these proteins can be prepared with skim milk, almond milk, rice milk, soy milk, or even water. Shakeology protein mixes are based on Whey protein isolate and Forever Lite Ultra is based on Soy protein isolate. Soy is the only protein source that has a substantiated heart health claim issued by the American Heart Association that says "a low fat diet which includes 25 grams of soy protein daily may reduce the risk of heart disease and lower LDL cholesterol"

"Soy protein contains all of the essential amino acids required to support human life, and is therefore a complete protein." Quoted from

Environmental Factors of Whey Protein vs. Soy Protein

When making the decision on which protein is the right protein to meet your needs, environmental factors should also be taken into consideration. It takes 75,000 gallons of water to produce 1 ton of protein from animal protein sources vs. 7,500 gallons of water to produce 1 ton of protein from soy beans. Cattle also produce copious quantities of greenhouse gases, methane most notably. Bovine flatulence has been reported to contribute more methane than previously thought, and methane is better at trapping heat in the lower atmosphere than CO2 which is the number one greenhouse gas.

The average cow can produce between 66 and 132 gallons of methane each day and "are the largest source of methane from human-related activities" according to the EPA. As per the Food and Agriculturla Oranization "Livestock (all forms) are responsible for 18% of the greenhouse gas emissions. More than all the cars, planes, and all other forms of transport combined."

The good news is that both Shakeology and Forever Lite Ultra With Aminotein are GMO-Free. They are both also herbicide and pesticide free. Since 95% of the Soy in the US is GMO, this is actually refreshing news that there is at least one company that is using GMO-free soy in their protein powders.

Summary: The Bottom Line

Shakeology contains less fat and calories than Forever Lite Ultra

  1. Forever Lite Ultra has more than double the amino acids as Shakeology and double the protein of Shakeology.
  2. Forever Lite Ultra costs slightly less than Shakeology.
  3. Whey protein is a by product of the cheese making process, or in other words a dairy product. Concerns about the bovine flatulence contribution to greenhouse gasses should be taken into consideration.
  4. Both products are GMO-free, herbicide free, and pesticide free.
  5. Shakeology can be purchased in individual serving packets, Forever Lite Ultra comes only in a 15-serving pouch.
  6. Forever Lite Ultra is only available in Chocolate and Vanilla. Shakeology is available in Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Greenberry, and perhaps a few other flavors are on the horizon.
  7. Forever Lite Ultra is Soy based and therefore a better choice for people who are lactose intolerant. Shakeology is derived from milk by-products.
  8. Soy protein has a substantiated health claim, Whey protein does not.

The Proprietary Contents

Shakeology contains the following ingredients that are deemed as proprietary blends:

  1. Proprietary Protein Blend
  2. Proprietary Adaptagenic Herb Blend
  3. Proprietary Pre- and Pro- Biotic Blends
  4. Proprietary Super Greens Blend

It also states that it contains an antioxidant superfood blend.

As can be seen from the nutritional facts of both products each one contains some constituents that the other one doesn't. Shakeology has less calories, fat, and sodium. Forever Lite Ultra With Aminotein contains more protein, more than twice the amino acids, and slightly less than the cost of shakeology. If you weigh taste in as a factor, then Forever Lite Ultra is clearly the winner; however, it is up to each individual person to decide which is better for them.

In my opion both are excellent products. These are probably the two most nutrionally dense protein shake supplement available anywhere in the marketplace as of the writing of this article.

Hey billybuc, Thanks for the comment. I'm not quite finished yet, as I have to have it proofread by someone from one of the companies to make sure that everything that should be included is included and that it is as fair and unbiased as possible.

Hey manatita44-I'm not familiar with Nature's Sunshine, but I have used (I guess that's obvious) both Forever Living and Shakeology. Hope you are GREAT too!!! BTW-I'm not telling you which one I used the most, but I will tell you that I have lost 42 pounds since I started.

A well-researched article on protein and with a touch of personal experience. I have not tried them, but I am used to Nature's Sunshine.

I have tried vanilla and chocolate but they did not look like anything that I'm seeing. Hope that you are ok (smile) Peace, Pocono.
