Accutane is a prescription medication and is used to treat to severe acne. Severe acne is also known as nodular acne and leads to painful red bumps under the skin. Doctors usually prescribe this medicine only after all acne treatments may proven ineffective. Some of the side effects of accutane include inflammatory bowel disease, crohn's disease, dizzy, nervous, ulcerative colitis and dry skin. The generic name of accutane is isotretinoin. Always take this medicine as prescribed by your health care provider. Do not share this medicine with any other person. Here are some of the foods to avoid while taking acutane.

List of foods to avoid while taking accutane:

1. Avoid foods that raise cholesterol level: Some of the foods that raise cholesterol level include organ meats, saturated fat oils, trans fatty acids, partially hydrogentated oils, high fat diary products, fried foods and refined foods.

Examples of organ meats include liver, kidneys, heart and brain. Limit the use of pork, bacon and sausage. Saturated fat oils is found in butter, coconut oil, palm oil and cocoa butter. Instead you can use healthy oils such as canola and olive oil. Trans fatty acids is found in shortenings, chips, cookies, commercial salad dressings and margarines. Refined foods is found in cakes, ice cream, cream pies, white sugar, artificial sweeteners and muffins.

2. Avoid food that elevate blood sugar level: Foods that elevate blood sugar level quickly include sugar and starchy vegetables. Some of the starchy vegetables include potatoes, squash and parsnips.

3. Vitamin supplements: Do not take vitamin supplements that contain vitamin A while taking accutane. Instead you can consume vitamin A foods such as pumpkin, carrots, apricots, cantaloupe, broccoli and spinach.

4. Vegetables: Avoid vegetables such as corn, beans, olives, lima beans, commercial baked beans and dried peas.

5. Fruits: Avoid fruits such as bananas, grapes and coconut. Bananas and grapes are high in sugar content.

6. Milk products: Avoid high fat milk products such as whole milk, yogurt, cheeses, non-dairy cream substitutes and ice cream. Instead you can skim milk for breakfast.

7. Nuts: Limit the use of walnuts, peanuts and pecans. You can use up to one tablespoonful per day.

8. Beverages: Limit or avoid sugared fruit juices and soft drinks.

9. Alcohol: Alcohol should be avoided while taking accutane. It may irritate the liver.

10. Other foods: Avoid or limit the use of luncheon meats, yam, potato chips, jellies, milk sherbets and chocolate.

  • Do not donate blood while you take accutane. Avoid at least 30 days after you stop taking accutane. Donating blood to pregnant women may lead to birth defects in babies.
  • Avoid long periods of direct sunlight and use of tanning beds. Accutane can make your skin more sensitive to uv rays. You can use sunscreen lotion with a SPF rating of 15 or more on your exposed body parts.
  • Completely avoid breast feeding and for 30 days after you stop taking it.
  • Do not take herbal products or any other medicines while you take accutane. Take to your health care provider first.
  • Avoid waxing, laser procedures and dermabrasion. Consult with your doctor for cosmetic procedures.
  • Do not take accutane if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
  • Talk to your health care provider before taking accutane if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, mental illness and asthma.
