Are You Bored?

No matter who you are or what type of work you do or what your lifestyle is, more than likely you have become bored sometimes in your life. Everybody has been bored. Boredom becomes a problem only when it happens often and stays a long time like an unwanted houseguest.

Boredom is an emotional state experienced when an individual says he had nothing to do to give him satisfaction. It is the person's own assessment because there is always something to do. Boredom exists when someone is not interested in his surroundings, including people and things he has loved being around on other occasions.

When a person is bored, he describes his condition around him as dull, tedious, not interesting and lacking motivation. Boredom can best be described as the feeling a person has when he is not motivated to do anything. People who are bored say, "There is nothing to do." They have cable television with hundreds of channels, yet they say, "There is nothing on television to watch." These statements are not true at all. They are the bored person's perception of his surroundings and his situation at the time.

The Dangers

Some people might know that boredom can be dangerous if it happens often and if it lingers. When people are bored, they do boring things. This only brings on more boredom. People sleep, overeat, or drink alcohol to get rid of boredom. Bored people become passive people. Bored people do boring things which don't prevent boredom. Instead, boredom increases boredom.

Boredom can be a destructive feeling that leads people to neglect things they should do. They don't do them because they do not provide the pleasure like they used to. There are noticeable signs when someone is bored. They zone out in meetings and classes. They fall asleep in church. They drink alcohol or do drugs.

According to BBC News, "Boredom can be a dangerous and disruptive state of mind that damages your health." On the other hand, boredom is beneficial because without it, many creative things would not be done.

Boredom is not always dangerous. In certain cases, boredom can force a person's creative juices to flow. It all depends on what a person does about his boredom.

"So bored."

"So bored."

Five Types of Boredom

There are actually five types of boredom. Look through the list below to determine the type you have.

  • Indifferent boredom exists when someone withdraws and doesn't care one way or the other about things that are going on around him.
  • Calibrating boredom happens when a person has wandering thoughts and does not know what to do.
  • Searching boredom is an unpleasant restlessness and the person searches for something to do but soon realizes that none of the activities that come to mind will give him satisfaction.
  • Reactant boredom exists when a person has a strong motivation to escape from everything and everybody associated, such as teachers, bosses, or church members.
  • Apathetic boredom is very different from all the other types. It is a feeling of helplessness or depression. About 36% of bored people fall into this category.

Triggers

Boredom might be temporary, or it might go on longer than expected. If a bored person is not back on track in a little while, then it could mean danger lies ahead. Therefore, it is necessary to do something about boredom before it develops into something more serious.

In order to get rid of boredom, the person should identify which of the five types of boredom he has.

After identifying which type of boredom one is experiencing, he should identify which one of the three reasons he is bored. Ask these three questions. In every case, your mind focuses on the situation and triggers boredom.

  1. Are you being prevented from doing something you want to do?
  2. Are you compelled to do something you don't want to do?
  3. Is it because you just can't find something interesting to do?

Remedies

Boredom can be eliminated from a person's life instead of taking up residence there. Most of the time, it does not come to stay. There are remedies for every type of boredom.

As bad as boredom is for some people, some positive things can come from it. You have probably heard it said, "Boredom is the mother of creativity." That means something positive can be birthed out of boredom. Some of the most beautiful music has been created when a singer was bored. Some of the best-selling books have been written when the author was bored.

The best remedy for boredom is to replace it with something else. If you are bored, watching old movies might help. For example, who can be bored watching the I Love Lucy classics that are still being aired in black and white on some television networks? Who can remain bored while watching The Golden Girls' marathons?

If writing lyrics to a song or chapters of a book or watching old movies is not your thing, then play a game on your computer. There are hundreds of games and puzzles online to choose from. You can play by yourself to beat your own score, or you can play with others around the world who also might be bored. Because of technology, you can play a game with someone in Spain while you are in New York City. You won't be bored while trying to beat someone while playing an online game.

Some people find it therapeutic to repot a plant or work in a garden if they have one. When all else fails, take a walk and commune with nature. In no time at all, boredom will disappear.
