Fibromyalgia What Is It?

Tender points

I had never heard of the disorder, Fibromyalgia, what is it? What are the symptoms? and How do you treat it? These were the questions that I asked when my 18 year old daughter was diagnosed with the disease.

In my research I have discovered that Fibromyalgia is a disorder that is characterized by chronic widespread, unexplained pain in the muscles and joints. When the doctor examined my daughter he found specific places on her body that caused her pain when light pressure was applied. Some other symptoms include fatigue, problems sleeping, depression, anxiety triggered by emotional stress, physical trauma (such as a car accident) or illness such as a viral or bacterial infection. The cause is not very well understood, but it is believed that the brain and nerves are overreacting or misinterpreting normal pain signals possibly due to an imbalance in neurotransmitter chemicals. I have also learned that 2-5% of all people are affected by this and women are 8 to 9 times more likely than men to get it, but it occurs in both sexes. Most of the cases are diagnosed between the ages of 20-50, children and teens can also exhibit symptoms as well.

Looking back at my daughter's childhood and teens, I realized that she had the symptoms of Fibromyalgia since she was a child. I remember her complaining about her shoulders hurting and I would try to massage them for her and she would ask me to stop because it hurt. What confused me about that was I was massaging very lightly, when she was diagnosed I realized that the shoulders are one of the specific points that are very painful for people with Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyaglia is often a misdiagnosed disorder, and many people do not feel like it is a real disease.

Treatment for Fibro is antidepressants, pain meds, exercise, physical therapy, relaxation and stress reduction. Many doctors recommend yoga, to help to relax and strengthen muscles.

Before my daughter was diagnosed with Fibro I would watch her suffer in pain that I did not understand, It was heartbreaking for me to watch, some days it was all I could do to get her out of bed, between the pain and the depression she could barely function. The weather seems to have a very big effect on her also, rain, humidity and cold all make her uncomfortable.

The doctor prescribed an antidepressant, this has helped her tremendously. She still has her ups and down but they are not as severe. Fibromyalgia is a real disorder and it affects many people, just because someone looks healthy doesn't mean that they are not suffering.

Below I have provided a list of symptoms keep in mind that symptoms vary from person to person so it is best to have your doctor decide if you have fibromyalgia or not.

1. chronic widespread pain

2. fatigue

3. mental fog (confusion, memory issues)

4. delayed reaction to physical exertion or stressful events

5. family history

6. sweats

7. unexplained weight loss or gain

8. vision changes including rapidly worsening vision

9. headaches/migraines

10. pain ranging from mild to severe

11. light or broken sleep not feeling refreshed

12. bloating and nausea

13.abdominal cramps

14. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

15. urinary frequency

16. trouble concentrating

17. sensitive to odors, light, noise

18. panic attacks

19. depression/cry easily

20. mood swings

There are more symptoms but these are the basic ones. Fribromyalgia is not well understood but is not a new disease. Living with fibromyalgia is an everyday challenge. Doctors recommend exercise, sleep, good diet, meditation, and some anti depressants. Below I have provided a list of natural remedies. So many of us are reluctant to use prescribed medications due to the side effects and suffer in pain.

5 of the top natural fibromyalgia relief medications

1. SAMe this is something that occurs naturally in our bodies, some of us don't make enough. it is needed for proper immune function, it helps maintain cell membranes and assists in the production and breakdown of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine

2. Magnesium this helps in the generation of energy in cells, this needs further studies but it looks promising.

3. Vitamin D a German study show a correlation between low vitamin D levels and musculoskeletal symptoms, also linked to anxiety and depression in people with fibromyalgia.

4. 5-hydroxytryptophan this is thought to work by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain and may reduce the number of tender points in people with fibromyalgia.

5. vitamin B12, low levels of B12 in cerebrospinal fluid of people with fibromyalgia

Finally Capsaicin Cream can be used to numb the pain of fibromyalgia temporarily. It has the same ingredients that are in chili peppers.
