Using Essential Oils for Respiratory Health

My Experience

Five years ago, I started feeling more congested and had trouble sleeping at night due to nasal congestion making it hard for me to get comfortable. While I found a little relief using over-the-counter products, I continued to feel congested throughout the day. Not finding full relief, I began studying other alternatives I could use in addition to taking medications. Frequently, I found that essential oils kept popping up as an alternative solution that many people quickly found relief in. After hearing countless stories of the success people found using essential oils for respiratory health, I decided to buy a diffuser and a few oils to see if I could find similar success.

And the rest is history. After just a few nights, I immediately was fully cleared of my nasal congestion during the night and found much needed additional relief during the day. Using essential oils along with my over-the-counter remedies gave me the missing element I needed to get full relief from my nasal congestion. I also saw immediate benefits when I used essential oils during illness. My respiratory symptoms were less severe, and I was not sick for near as long as previously.

With all the potential uses of essential oils and the countless ways these oils can help improve different areas of your life and health, I personally have found that using essential oils for respiratory health is my favorite. Respiratory Distress Caused by Allergies

Essential oils are wonderful for combating seasonal allergies. Diffusing equal parts: lavender, lemon, and peppermint essential oil in a diffuser is a great and simple way to help naturally find relief during allergy season. You can also add 12 drops each to a homemade roll-on bottle and top with a carrier oil (fractioned coconut oil, sweet almond, castor, jojoba, etc.) and roll on your neck, spine or bottoms of your feet. I roll this blend on the bottom of my feet and spine daily during the spring and summer, and I find that it helps greatly.

Lavender, lemon and peppermint essential oils also have other tremendous benefits along with providing relief of respiratory distress.

Respiratory Distress Caused by Illness

Essential oils can also offer tremendous benefits when respiratory illness strikes. Along with the use of over the counter or prescription medications, essential oils can help potentially shorten the length of illness and shorten its duration. Since using essential oils, I have noticed I do not get sick near as often. When I do get sick, I am not as sick as my peers and for not nearly as long. Many essential oils have natural antiviral and antibacterial properties to them, which means that when they are diffused and inhaled, they help kill germs lingering in the air and your respiratory tract. Some of the best oils to use when illness strikes are: tea tree, eucalyptus, and oregano. While these oils may not smell the best, they are the most potent in killing germs in the air and treating respiratory illnesses. They blend well with lavender, lemon, and peppermint essential oils and can be used with them to cut the potency of the smell.

While essential oils can be a great help in the recovery process of unwanted illness, they should not replace the use of prescription or over the counter medications that are needed in cases of severe illness. When severe illness strikes, using essential oils along with medication is the best route to recovery.

General Respiratory Support

There are countless oils that can give you general respiratory support and give your airways a little boost. Some of my favorite oils include: spearmint, lime and rosemary. They have a natural, refreshing scent and help clear your airways when inhaled. Plus, these oils blend well with other essential oils, meaning you can add these oils to many of the other oils mentioned previously.

Respiratory Support Blends

Finally, here are some blends you can try using some of the oils mentioned above.

For allergies:

  • 3 drops lavender, 3 drops lemon, 3 drops peppermint

For illness:

  • 1 drop lemon, 1 drop eucalyptus, 1 drop peppermint, 1 drop tea tree
  • 7 drops lemon, 3 drops tea tree
  • 3 drops lavender, 3 drops eucalyptus
  • 3 drops lavender, 2 drops tea tree, 2 drops peppermint
  • 5 drops lemon, 2 drops peppermint, 1 drop oregano
  • General support:
  • 1 drop lime, 1 drop eucalyptus, 1 drop rosemary, 1 drop lemon, 1 drop peppermint
  • 2 drops lavender, 2 drops spearmint, 1 drop lime
  • 4 drops lemon, 2 drops rosemary
  • 4 drops lime, 2 drops rosemary
