Things Which Cause Edema
Many things can cause water retention. Edema is what they call the swelling associated with this condition. Medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, cirrhosis, certain cancers, bacterial infections, skin infections, gout, medication side effects, pregnancy, menopause, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, hepatitis and liver disease are bound to create a problem with edema especially noticeable around legs, ankles and feet. Some of these medical problems will leave fluid other places in the body as well. Anyone experiencing edema should get medical advice if the condition becomes an ongoing problem. Your doctor can get to the root of the problem and often will prescribe a water pill to help. But diuretics (water pill) alone may not bring relief. You may be advised a number of other things to do. Many found remedies to relieve some causes of edema have been effective. A natural relief for edema could be all that’s needed for certain causes.
Medical conditions are not the only thing which causes edema. Hot weather can also cause water retention. Summer heat can make your ankles and feet swell. Another cause for swelling legs and feet can be standing or sitting in one position for long periods at a time. Travelers who ride for hours on end without stopping long enough to stretch their legs could become victims to edema. People who are a bit over weight tend to have problems with edema. Much of what the scales are telling them could be water retention. A natural relief for edema with these conditions can be as easy as stopping the cause associated with them.
Let's Talk Edema Relief
Let’s talk about edema relief. We know edema is water retention. Our body is made of mostly water. If we don’t drink enough water to stay hydrated edema may be present because our kidneys are not functioning as they should be. It is very important to drink enough water. Water keeps all our organs working together properly. People often think because they drink a lot of fluids the effect is the same, but a limit on caffeinated, alcohol and sugar sweetened beverages can actually reduce water retention. Not to mention many of these beverages are loaded with sodium which also causes edema.
Many people have had success in using support stockings to reduce swelling. Proper fit of these stockings are important if relief is sought effectively. Medical supply stores will ask you to be fitted to these compression stockings to assure this.
Our diet plays an important part in controlling edema. If we increase eating such things like whole grain, potatoes, grapes, apples, onions, cabbage, oranges, and cucumbers they have been known to bring relief to edema. Asparagus which contains vitamin B6 works like a natural diuretic. Things like garlic, ginger, parsley, turmeric, green tea, dandelion, ginkgo, horse chestnut, apple cider vinegar, aloe gel, and black strap molasses help reduce the inflammation causing edema. Foods high in potassium control edema. A well thought out diet plan can have benefits for whatever ailment causing the edema to begin with.
It is very important to elevate swelled legs as high as possible above our kidneys to let the draw of gravity help the kidneys release the extra water. Sometimes a few minutes will not be enough. Several times a day for as long as possible may be needed. This task can be undesirable for many folks, but the end results will make them glad they took the time to pursue it.
We can relieve edema naturally. Remedies like parsley tea made by steeping two teaspoons of dried parsley leaves with one cup of boiling water for ten minutes and drank three times a day is said to help. A cup of green tea with ginger added is another remedy. Apple cider vinegar can be used to apply directly to swelled areas and a tablespoon taken by mouth before meals has helped reduce fluid and help with weight loss. Other remedies like replacing our drinking water with distilled water for as little as one week, has seen results. The use of flax seed and flax seed oil had results as well. The list most likely goes on and on. These are only a few examples of what people have tried and claimed success with.
Another known treatment for edema is exercise. There seems to be added benefits if these exercises are done in water. Swimming or bathing exercises cause the fluid to go away naturally. With exercise energy is increased causing a well state of mind and body functions. A normal weight is achieved and water retention problems are decreased enormously.

Information for this article has been gathered from various sources. My husband has battled edema off and on for years associated with medical problems and medication side effects. Some of these remedies were suggested by his doctors. Some were suggested by other people dealing with the same problems. I only noted what people said helped them. Dandelions are supposed to be diuretic as well - I use the leaves and roots in soup sometimes, and young dandelion leaves can be eaten raw in a salad
