Do Your Cracking Joints Mean Something Serious?

I am a practicing physical therapist aiming to help people with my knowledge as much as possible.

Why do your joints crack and make popping noises?

Do you ever feel like you have the bones of an eighty-year-old and often ask yourself Why do your joints crack and make popping noises? Perhaps, all of us have been there at some point of time or experience it once in a while. So, is it something to be taken care of? Let's find out.

A very straight to the point answer of the question that 'why are my joints popping' is simply due to a fluid surrounding your joints called synovial fluid, which works as a lubricant between the two bones and serves to reduce friction whenever a joint movement takes place. The fluid contains several gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Whenever you hear a crack or a pop sound it just might be these gases escaping and creating such sounds.

Another reason why your joints might be making such sounds is due to the movement of ligaments and tendons. A tendon changes its position whenever a body movement takes place with your ligaments tightening over your joints. A snap sound can be heard when the tendon returns back to its original position. This is more frequent in ankle and knee joints.

Snapping joints and other symptoms

With the above-mentioned reasons, it is safe to assume that your joints are completely healthy. However, If you are experiencing some other symptoms with the cracking sounds then you might want to take a look into it.

A list of symptoms that you might be experiencing that can be a feature of some serious health-related issues is listed below :

  • Pain or stiffness in joints
  • Restricted movement of joints
  • Marked swelling around the joint area
  • Redness around the joints
  • Weakness in the joints
  • Bumps or bony outgrowths in the joints
  • Physical deformities
  • Malaise

Causes

The listed symptoms can be caused due to lack of calcium, phosphorus, Vitamin D3 in the body. Also, these can be the early symptoms of some serious underlying bone diseases such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, dislocation of a joint, injury to a ligament, and many more.

If you are approaching old age then you are likely to suffer from joint diseases because the bones start to degenerate with age.

What is the solution?

If you are facing some major problems with any of the mentioned symptoms then it is highly advisable to see a doctor so you can get a proper assessment and the required further treatment.

However, if you need a temporary solution to ease your pain before you actually visit a health care provider then some of the following remedies might help you out.

  • Heat Therapy: You can give yourself some heat therapy at home by soaking your joint in lukewarm water or by simply using a heating belt. Make sure to have regular checks to prevent any chances of burns.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE HEAT IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ANY TYPE OF REDNESS OR OTHER SKIN ISSUES.

  • Ice packs: Ice can be used to soothe hot and swollen joints.
  • Massaging: Gently massaging over the area can lead to some muscle relaxation and pain relief. However, if the pain is too much then a massage should be avoided.
  • Stretching: Performing mild stretching can help ease the pain.

All of the techniques should be performed with proper care and instructions. If the pain or condition is too serious then you should visit a health care provider as soon as possible.
