Depression is a mood disorder that stems from the brain. Because the brain is 85 percent water, when you are depressed you also become dehydrated. Dehydration is bad for the brain.

Therefore, it stands to reason that water helps when a person is depressed.

When you are depressed, the worst thing you can do is to drink beverages other than water. Caffeine will increase depression. Therefore, drinking soda, tea, and coffee will make you even more depressed. You should also limit alcohol if you are depressed. It is interesting that when people are depressed, they head to the liquor cabinet. That is a big mistake. While depressed people think alcohol will help, it will only make them more depressed. So, they drink more and the cycle continues.

There is a simple way to explain what happens when a depressed person drinks. Alcohol and the other drinks mentioned cause dehydration because the body will need more water to remove alcohol from the body. Of course, it depends on the drink.

Usually, it takes at least three times the amount of water to process the drink. That is simple math. If you drink 8 ounces of beer, it will take your body 24 ounces of water to flush out that amount of beer. What if you don't drink 24 ounces of water? Your body is very smart. If you don't give your body the amount of water that it needs, guess what? Your body will take the water it needs from your bones, your muscles, and your brain.

Water is a quencher for depression. When the body is dehydrated, a person can become anxious, nervous, and depressed. Water can calm your nerves. Other drinks will make you more agitated, irritated, and moody.

Anything other than water actually can cause dehydration in the body. Therefore, it is best to avoid coffee, tea, juices, soda, and alcohol when you are depressed. You get so little water from your fruits, vegetables, and other foods that it doesn't count very much toward the recommended amount of water you need each day. Food usually provides as little as 20 percent of your daily water intake. Therefore, you need to make up the difference by drinking plain water and instead of sugary drinks.

Most people do not relate depression with being dehydrated. However, when you experience depression, simply drinking more water will help wash away depression and anxiety.

Water can also provide increased motivation and energy. The next time you find yourself depressed, increasing your water intake will make you feel so much better.

How Much Water Is Enough For Depression?

How much water should you drink for depression? While drinking water will not miraculously cure all types of depression, it will surely help if a person is chronically dehydrated.

The Mayo Clinic suggests drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water on a daily basis. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink no less than 80 ounces of water each day. If you weigh more, then you should drink more water. Remember, your body knows how to do the math.
