How To Treat Autoimmune Disease
What Is Sarcoidosis? It's an Autoimmune Disease
Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory autoimmune disorder. It is not contagious although with most autoimmune diseases you cannot donate blood. The reason why has not been addressed; it is just a precaution.
Sarcoidosis is more common in African American people and people from Northern Europe. It is found in all races. The lungs affected in about 90 percent of its host and possibly the heart.
Most people that have been diagnosed with sarcoidosis will have the disease disappear as mysterious as it appeared; others will suffer for years with many symptoms and pain that even their closest friends will not believe. Some lose their life.
This mysterious illness like others is like a nightmare that no one sees or experiences but you. Your complaints can be few or many at various times and certainly frightening and confusing for those that newly acquired this strange illness. The road you will travel is a lonely one and groups such as Inspire.com is a community of those that are in similar situations with sarcoidosis.
The symptoms of sarcoidosis varies for each individual from itchy skin to spine pain and shortness of breath. From minor headaches to poor and poor eye-site. I have been plaques with joint stiffness for years upon waking up.
I've experienced painful legs from even the smallest bump, but the most terrible symptom many of us face with illnesses we have to deal with is our own families, friends or doctors treating us like hypochondriacs.
- lung fluid
- leg swelling
- eye issues
- skin conditions
- lack of wellness
- loss of eyesight
- weight gain/loss
- shortness of breath
- hypo pigmentation
- hyer pigmentation
- loss of lung function
- multiple organ involvement
There are symptoms of shortness of breath, unexplained discomfort, chronic pain, itchyness and more. What makes me an expert? I have lived with sarcoid (lung involvement) everyday. You can also read my hub' Living with Sarcoidosis".
There are a percentage of about 25% that have sarcoidosis in their lungs, eyes or other organs; as well as having skin issues such as itchy skin and a since of fatigue and exhaustion, edema, granulomous, lymphnodes and nodules. When the skin is involved most likely staying out of the sun helps and reducing your vitamin D.
The pulmonary function test is used to measure the degree of lung function or capacity. Liver test and biopsies are used to see how progressive the sarcoid is. Each symptom is treated separately as it appears; the most popular treatment for sarcoidosis when it is not dormant is prednisone a steroid.
Most doctors will give you your meds but will not discuss the changes we should make in our daily diets to prevent more harm. The way we treat ourselves is the best treatment to help our bodies react more favorably in the long run and hopefully add quality years to our lives.
Healthy Lifestyle Change
Take a 30 day challenge or even a week to see how great you feel with these changes.
- Don't eat salt. Change to sea salt please or other healthy alternative.
- No baked goods or anything with flour. I know this is a killer bread and cookie lovers.
- Larger portions of fresh vegetables with our dinners. Fresh vegetable help us produce nitric oxide that helps us heal by improving cellular health.
- Less or no red meat. Eat leaner meats such as chicken, turkey or pork.
- Do not eat fried foods or fast foods.
- No processed foods. I make healthy soups and eat beans to minimize the expense.
- Drop the sugar it causes inflammation. I know it's hard but fresh fruit helps.
- Quit smoking/ alcohol/non-prescribed drugs
- Walk 30 minutes a day. Split the time to 10 a session. Dance, play with a child or pet.
- Never sit down over an hour without standing to stretch for at least 5 minutes.
A healthy lifestyle change is great for all people to prevent future illnesses. It shouldn't take an illness such as this to force me or you to learn how to treat our precious gift (our bodies).
Sarcoid of the Lungs Causes Lung Lymph Nodes (Granulomas Lungs)
When you have lungs and organs are affected by sarcoidosis it is very important that you understand that your body is in a very toxic state. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease causing lymph nodes in the lungs. Inflammation can be dealt with by alkalizing your body.
Sarcoidosis Lung Disease- Granulomas
Growths of granulomas in the lymph nodes can affect the skin especially the front lower legs, face, and organs such as your lungs. These marks can become inflamed and itch. They can be flat purplish red, brown and raised.Steroidal cream may help with skin granulomas.
Granulomas in the lungs can affect the way oxygen and carbon dioxide is exchanged in your lungs. When the granulomas becomes inflamed you may be given a 7 day dose of prednisone for the inflammation to relieve your symptoms.
Side Affects Of Prednisone (Steroids)
Conventional Sarciod Treatment
Sarcoidosis Treatment - Prednisone and Pain Medications etc
The preferred sarcoid treatment is normally prednisone (steroids) beginning from 20 ml to 80 ml for more severe sufferers. Prednisone is taken when you have a flare ups which could be joint pain, breathing issues and lack of wellness.
You may be instructed to stay on your prednisone in a 7 day series, 6 weeks or longer for more severe problems.
When using prednisone as a sarcoid treatment you could experience side affects such a weight gain, emotional changes, organ and bone issues. This means not taking them can give your worse side affects such as intolerable pain or organ breakdown.
Long term use of steroids can cause sugar level to go up causing diabetes. See how you can naturally lower your blood sugar levels. This may sounds scary but take your meds, eat right and exercise and your doctor will reduce or take you off your medications. Remember the side effect of not taking your medication could be much worse that the side effect of a medication.
I changed the way I took care of myself and my doctors gradually took me off of over 11 types of meds. Today I only use a pump and pain killers when needed. I still suffered from chronic pain and other symptoms but aren't on daily steroids ,kidney and liver meds. Make some changes with the tips below and help your organs repair themselves.
WARNING: Never ever!! Stop using medication your doctor prescribed for you. Let your body tell your doctor what you need. Suddenly stopping a medication could harm you.

Warning: Always consult your doctor before taking any herbs. (For instance Hawthorn extract is a natural beta blocker and works great in reducing cholesterol and preventing clogged arteries; however those taking beta blocker prescribed by doctors could have real problems by taking this.)
- Clear Lungs to help strengthen you respiratory system and relieve breathing issues.
- Braggs Apple Cidar Vinegar to alkaline your body, clean impurities from your system as well as inflammations from joints. (So much more) Do not substitute recipe on bottle.
- Deep breathing exercise. Directions below.
- Nictric Oxide Supplement - L Citrulline ( L arginine can hurt those with autoimmune disorders)
Natural Pain Relievers
If you have heard that your lung function has gone down. You should know that the inflammation in your body has gone up. Which can mean more pain and other symptoms due to the lack of distribution of oxygen to your organs and a tremendous amount of inflammation. For chronic pain relief you can take natural pain relievers instead of harsh pain relievers. Some pain is so great you will have to make a lifestyle change to get off the prescribed pain relievers.
- Devils Claw (African Herb)
- Bromelain (An extract of Pineapple)
- Turmeric (Ancient Herb)
I began taking a supplement called ClearLungs (Chinese herbal blend) by Ridgecrest everyday. I bought the regular and the extra strength. I will take these the rest of my life. I was told I would have heart issues by now but I am blessed with a strong heart.
Update: As of January 2015 I have no scar tissues. My first normal xray in 17 years!!
You will also have to eat foods to alkaline your body. Diseases thrive in an acidic body. Buy a Litmus Strip from your pharmacy or Whole Foods store to test your bodies pH balance. it should be between 6.8 to 7.3 for optimum health.
Relieve Lung Problems With Deep Breathing Exercise
Forcing oxygen into your lungs and cells by deep breathing exercises will enhance lung function, clean out toxins and mucus giving you healthier lungs, better body function and a since of wellness. You will see the benefits with each pulmonary function test.
- deep breathing exercises
- plenty of alkaline water
A healthy diet is very important to your wellness. Medicines can cause your body to become very acidic. Inflammation is acidic. Stress and lack of rest can also cause the body to become acidic.
3 Steps Deep Breathing Exercise For Lungs
A technician from the Philippians taught me how to do deep breathing exercises but never discussed my results with me.(policy) The exercise is best done when the air is the cleanest; early in the morning or after the rain. My next visit I had more lung function! Here is what I did.
- Breath in through your mouth for 7 seconds.
- Hold breath for 21 seconds. Your goal.
- Release air from mouth slowly for 14 seconds until you emptied your lungs. You will then replace the old air with the new while exercising your lungs.
Final Words About Sarcoidosis...Well, for now
From Me to You
It is imperative for you to learn how to alkaline your body whether you are in good health, have the sarcoidosis or any other illness. Doing so will greatly improve your health and any symptoms and built up your immune system by ridding you body of inflammation. Your doctors will most likely just discuss treatments.
If you have an inflammatory autoimmune disease this means you have to counteract the inflammation by driving up your pH levels to a high 9.2 to 9.5 pH level. You can do this by eating alkalined foods and drinking lemon water. Lemons are highly alkaline inside of your body; strange but true.
Those of you with sarcoidosis and other autoimmune disorders are not suffering alone so we have to share what works with each other the best way we can until there is a cure. No one knows how to prevent the sarcoid disease, but hopefully they will find out soon. In the mean while change your daily habits and work on your healthly lifestyle change. Even if you take baby steps remember you are doing great.
Rome wasn't built in a day. Every change you make counts and brings you closer to a better quality of life. Don't listen to the negativity about this disorder. I was told I was going to die over 15 years ago and several time after but I am still hear.
Adversities are meant to test you. You become a soldier and protect your health with everything you got. Change your attitude about exercise, change your attitude about eating right and keep swinging until you hit something. Help somebody, learn a craft, give out free smiles or hugs but don't let scarcodosis steal your joy and rob you from your life. My very best to you.

Thank you for your uplifting information. I have just been diagnosed with sarcoidosis and it took 3 emergency visits to the hospital, 5 times to my doctor but they finally found out why I have been in so much pain. They thought I had cancer again, but did but it turn out to be sarcoidosis, It is all around lungs I'm just starting my journey on how to help myself fight this. Right now on Prednisone to help with the inflammation. Lung function test next week and been told that I need to see a eye doctor. I'm learning by reading that I can help myself by changing by eating habits. I wish I could help with the sleeping habit too don't sleep much but I can now work again without alot of pain. I learn some great information in your post that I will start doing drinking lemon water is one. I have already given up red meat and eat mostly vegetables. The doctors check my vitamin D and calcium level because of my bones. I have hope now that maybe I can get this under control instead of it controlling me. Thank you

Thank you! Thank you for this amazing information! I was diagnosed 6 years ago with neurosarcoidosis which is rare because it was not found in any other areas of my body. Everything you have mentioned is 100% true. I was also told I might not make it and I might have severe brain damage. I had to have a shunt put into my brain because of the severe swelling that I was experiencing from the inflammation and tumors. I had multiple hospital stays throughout my 9 month treatment. Once I was over the hump and starting to wean down off my steroids, I was ready to start fighting this disease and get my life back. I was only 35 and refused to let this destroy my life. Luckily I had some amazing doctors who told me I was toxic from the medications and the disease and needed to begin detoxing my body. One suggested that I start the paleo diet. After a few months I noticed a huge difference, especially getting rid of gluten. My next set of scans showed no tumors and no granulomas and no scar tissue and my MRIs have continued to remain that way. I have not had a relapse and have remained very strict with my diet. I have learned some other information from this article that I am going to true because of am a firm believer that we can reverse this autoimmune disease completely. Definitely surround yourself with others that can encourage you and might be on this journey as well but stay away from the communities that talk about only their issues with the disease or how it negatively affects their life. I was a part of one for about 6 months and had to finally cut ties because it was scary and overwhelming and depressing. So so glad I found this article because it is s full of great information that I have personally implemented into my life and am living the positive results from these changes and am here to tell you that there is hope!!

Thanks for the tips, it is a bit overwhelming and sometimes it can be scary when looking at the possibilities but then so many people manage to live with it, I get hopeful. When they first admitted me though they were diagnosing me with cancer so it was almost a relief that it was sarcoidosis (not much, but better than cancer). I had to have surgery to get some of the lymph nodes & biopsy them so now that that's healing up I'm ready to start talking treatments with my doc next week.
Darlene Matthews (author) on September 10, 2013:
@WiccanSage- God Bless. For starters you have to keep your body alkaline. Place one tsp of baking soda per gallon of water. This is a very inexpensive way to have alkaline water.
You can use any baking soda or go to Whole Food for some. Also get a bottle of Braggs apple cider vinegar to help rid your body of toxins. 2 tsp per 8 oz water. Drinking this will help toxins leave your body as well as fats from foods we have no business eating. (It will taste like lemon water you can add honey) . It's been 16 years of me and it has been a battle but when I learned how to take better care of my body it take care of me. The doctors said I would have heart involvement years ago but till this day there has been none.
Keep a good attitude and always remember it's about living!! You are a newbie and the information you will read can depress you. It is important that you know the facts but your attitude about maintaining a well balanced life will keep the symptoms at bey for the most part.
