Daniel- His Story
The biblical prophet Daniel showed no fear at the prospect of being fed to the lions. (see Daniel 6:10 Holy Bible) However, the ideal of eating the same food as everyone else worried him. (Daniel 1:8) He then proved the supremacy of a simple God fearing diet. The Apostle Paul wrote that all scripture is good for instruction. (2 Timothy 3:16)
Daniel Diet Worthy
The 'Daniel Diet', stands for more than simply abstaining from meat. It emphasizes eating food as the Lord offers it. Processing can take away the purity of food. Daniel and crew may have eaten potatoes during their fast, but would have avoided potato chips.
The herbal world offers many ways to relieve health issues including aromatherapy and direct application onto the body. The scope of this article is restricted to the eating and/or drinking of healthy ingredients.
The natural remedies in this forum are chosen based upon the following criterion: ingredients, medicinal muscle, and targeted symptom relief.
The three ingredients listed are by no means an exclusive collection of cold/flu remedies. However, these are highly important and readily available.
Sulphur serves as a detoxicant. Health care experts recognize that the toxic state of the body along with immunity system vulnerability provide ideal conditions for the 200 plus viruses that can cause the common cold.
Physicians and other health care experts widely acknowledge that this vitamin boost immunity by increasing the white blood cells in the body. Also, it has detoxifying properties.
This element helps the immunity system. Zinc is so good that it's often taken in capsule or pill form as a cold remedy.
Medicinal Muscle and Targeted Symptom Relief
The term medicinal muscle describe characteristics that serve to prevent and relieve cold/flu illnesses along with their symptoms. The common traits are as follows:

Garlic (Allium Sativum)
Garlic along with onion belongs to the Allium family.The prized bulbs are referred to as such due to a shared chemical composition that gives them their distinctive traits. Onion (Allium Cepa)
I heard that my paternal grandmother would slice an onion open and leave it by her children's (my father and two aunts) bedside when they suffered from a cold. She believed the split onion would soak up the germs thereby taking them out of the air.
Scientist in the health, nutrition and medicine fields have since confirmed her faith in onions. The valued bulbs are antibiotic and particularly good at clearing the "stuff",congestion, from weary cold sufferers. Onions warm the body which in effect counters the cold with heat.
The word citrus may best interpreted as the Latin term meaning toxin eliminating, immunity system boosting, white blood cell count building, rich source of vitamin C. Grapefruit, as with other citrus family members such as lemons, limes and oranges possess these traits. C, the most celebrated among the alphabet vitamins, provide protection from the cold and flu bugs.
Some health care experts suggest that people should ratchet up vitamin C intake to 8,000 milligrams per day to destroy cold and flu illnesses.The amount described would require supplements since it would take nearly 100 whole grapefruits or almost 50 cups (8 oz) of orange juice to provide that level of vitamin C. I say we should just keep it simple and stick to the 'Daniel Diet' way by eating citrus fruit often to stay healthy.
A certain pastor that I know extolls the virtue of drinking hot water with lemon (which may be acccompanied by honey) to prevent hoarseness from afflicting his voice. He is one who speaks in the fervent rhythmic style associated with African-American congregations. He also sings.I never detected a hoarse sound to his voice in 10 years of having attended his church, a place where church services are typically held twice on Sunday and twice more during the week.
Scientist have compiled research that validate his opinion. Lemon, in addition to its citrus properties has proven highly effective at healing sore throat issues. Lemons should be kept around during the cold and flu season.
Nuttin to it
Zinc is a proven effective ingredient in fighting colds. The best sources of zinc are red meat, poultry and fish. However, these are not 'Daniel Diet' based sources. Yet, all is not lost for the vegheads who seek cold and flu relief or prevention.
Almonds along with other nut species, peanuts and cashews provide good quantities of zinc.The U.S.D.A. standard for males aged 19-50 is 11 milligrams per day. A serving size of almonds that measures slightly less than 1/2 cup has 3 milligrams of zinc. Cashews supply nearly twice that amount.Ca-shew,ironically enough, is the sound people make when they sneeze:)
Sweets and Spices
Cinnamon bark is better than its bite.The reddish brown sticks imbued with the sweet fragrance familiar to many comes from the inner bark of their host trees.The release of cold and flu symptom relieving oils is procured by steeping the bark sticks in warm or hot water. I also like to use the powder form (pictured) as a substitute for or addition to brown sugar in my wintry morning hot cereal. Cinnamon provides a body warming effect that is likely the reason it is potent at calming the chills.
It is a pardonable error to mistakenly refer to eucalyptus as euca-lung-us. The Australian native provides respiratory aid beyond that of cold and flu relief. It has proven beneficial in the treatment of asthma and emphysema. Eucalyptus is particularly good taken via aromatherapy to combat breathing disorders.
A natural Eucalyptea is formed by pouring hot water over fresh or dried Eucalyptol leaves. The Euca beverage is good for cough relief. Furthermore, its antiseptic nature causes it to kill all bugs- germs,viruses and insects! This is probably why eucalyptol is the active ingredient in Listerine the brand name mouth rinse known for taking on harmful microbes.
Healing comes from various parts of different plants. The abundant nutrients in sweet potatoes derive from their roots whereas peppermint's healing properties are extracted from their leaves. Rhizomes, subterranean stems, are the medicinal incubators of ginger.
Ginger pose a triple threat to cold and flu viruses. It release toxins and warms the body in addition to harboring antiseptic powers.Rhizomes sliced fresh and simmered in warm water release the three pronged attack.
Honey is unique among 'Daniel Diet' resources. Honey derives from nectar yet it arrives from bees. The broad leaf European native relieves cough and congestion by thinning mucus along with loosening phelgm. A mint tea is made when hot water is doused upon dry peppermint leaves.
